View Full Version : Spaghetti Bridges

Hello ladies and gents. I have to build something called a spaghetti bridge for my d@mn physics class. I have no idea how to build it and guess what? I want your help. Some good links would be awesome and maybe some tips.


Some rules I have to follow:

1) First off it needs to be strong enough to hold my weight as I have to be able to stand on it. Thats going to be a problem.

2) It has to be like 30 cm long

3) The top has to be flat so I can stand on it and break my neck.

4) Needs to be made of spaghetti ONLY, and glue.

5) It's end supports must be at least 5 cm above the ground.

6) No middle supports

7) Something about triangles are strongest.

And thats about it. Help would be appreciated.

Yeah, I'll have to. I'll fail the class if I don't. I should try to find a friend in that class who doesn't backstab me. Maybe then I won't have to work by myself all the time :( .

Roughly 50 minutes. About 23 miles away from Chicago but I get confused on direction.

I remember I had to do something similar to that in 7th grade, but we used thin strips of crappy wood. The group that won had theirs hold something like 115 pounds their design was sorta like this, if you look at it from the side...


/_/_/_/\_\_\_\ Of course that might not help much but they had strips slanted like that. If you reinforce it enough a design similar to that may work. Also I think they had diagnol stirps going through the middle.

Yeah, I've been there plenty of times. I'm going to Benedictine University in Lisle next year.

So I've decided to use wood glue.

Ok, the first thing you need to know is to make it with trusses, preferably triangular. Look here for examples of why: http://www.ce.ufl.edu/activities/cdrom/civil/stable.html Make the sides of the bridge look like this:
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ The top should also be made of triangles. If you look at some "famous" bridges, you'll notice that the stuff holding them up is also made of triangular trusses. Look at the pictures here:

Also, the best thing to do is use smaller pieces of spaghetti, I.E. not the whole piece, because they break, even if they are reinforced with a whole lot of glue. Maybe make "bundles" of 10-20 pieces, broken in half before put together..put glue inside as well around the outside...

I would just like the time to say thank you for putting so much effort into helping me (although I was already done before I read this). I appreciate it a lot that there are some people on this website that do try to help. Thanks :animateds .

And to keep you all updated, I tested it on Wednesday. The teacher said that we didn't need to stand on it as long as it can hold the 80 pound weights on it. Yeah, my bridge passed so I was happy. Actually not many did...

Anyway, since I don't have a scanner it looked something like this:
