I'm thrilled for Philly. 25 years is a long time to go without a championship when you have 4 major sports teams.
congrats to ImIrish, Mat, Dirty Ernie and the rest of the Phillies regulars.
Thanks man, much appreciated.
So I watched the game on a TV in the parking lot. Cops came and kicked us out right after Jenkins scored. We pack it up and rush over to the CVS parking lot, and that's where I watched history unfold. There were no less the 40 of us around a TV in the back of a truck. As soon as they won, I just started running down Broad to City Hall. Thats 3.5 miles. My legs are jello.
It was really everything I hoped it be. We are heading down to the parade around 5am tomorrow.

what WINNING team's fan boo's the losing team?
watching madness videos from Philly today of people in the streets I realized that Rollins was right when calling the people of that city frontrunners. They did not have that many fans at the beginning of the season lol.

absolutely not. The Phillies' pitchers shut them down.
the only guy that got some decent swings was Crawford.
this was just the best team winning as far as I'm concerned. and that's with leaving 9873497233 men in scoring position.
how many teams can say they only lost 3 games in a postseason?
Scott Weber

i really think the baseball playoffs are like a totally different season and we should really reward regular season success a little bit more. for several of the past few WS, the winner has been a team that was worse in the regular season. this year, the Rays were better (in a better division) than the phillies for 162 games. the phillies were better for 5. I'm not taking anything away from the phillies, they proved they were a better postseason team, and that's the way it's set up so kudos and all that, but i think people should give more props to regular season success than we currently do.

its hilarious to you to boo the losing team when you win? philly fans... X-)
and the red sox only lost 3 games in the playoffs last year (all 3 to cleveland). the yankees only lost 2 in 98 and only 1 game in 99, and thats just off the top of my head...so 3 isnt anything special

It's like that in any sport, though. I don't see the point in rewarding the best regular season team. Like what are your examples? What would they get? A trophy?

I've always thought they should go back to the 4 division format and eliminate the Division Series. Fewer playoff teams = increased likelihood that the best clubs are the ones left standing in the end. Also, more balanced schedules. Playing your division opponents more frequently is great, from a rivalry standpoint, but it also can be unfair to teams who play in a tougher division and can distort win/loss records.
The Wild Card has been an enormous success, from the standpoint of bringing in the casual fan, so I doubt its going away. I think a good first step would be to adjust the scheduling.
with that being said, Philly was one of the best teams in the league this year. I have no qualms with them winning. This isn't the 2006 Cardinals.

I agree with this but from baseballs standpoint an extra round of playoffs just means more $$ for them.

It would be nice to fix the scheduling, but the strength of the division is just the luck of the draw. Some years it'll be tough, other years it won't. I mean, is it fair that the 2007 Patriots got to play the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills 6 times while a team like the Titans had to face the Colts, Texans, and Jags 6 times. Of that the Redskins play the Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys 6 times? There isn't a perfect system.

it's not really like that half as much in any other sport. in football, there's only 16 games played, so having 1 game against the other team isn't a real drastic skew. basketball, they play half the regular season games as baseball, same with hockey.
and i agree with leftwide and the 4 teams remaining, but i don't mind keeping the current divisions - but the division winner with the worst record gets left at home.
in premier league soccer, the team with the best record/most points at the end of the year wins the league. that's it. i've always liked that.

Why don't we go back to pre-1969 baseball and forgo divisions? Pitting the best regular season team in each league is the only way that the two best teams will be guaranteed a spot in the World Series.

I see, I am not disagreeing with you, just wanted to see the reasons. Unfortunately (or fortunately, just depends on your team) none of the American sports will ever get rid of the postseason. LWO and you both had good solutions, but MLB will never do that.

If that were the case this year, we would have had a tampa bay/cubs series. (no way the angels would have gotten 100 wins without all those extra games against the AL West)

I'd take it, but that would also require MLB to get rid of Interleague play and forgo the money made from that and the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Cue Scott Weber, the least objective moderator on any message board anywhere, judging Philadelphians for loving every time Chase does something like this. Only ignorant fans would embrace the word fuck. Somebody from Philly pissed in his cheerios or something.

I guess I'm starting to see your point imirish06. At the parade yesterday people booed random things like a beach ball and police horses It was quite remarkable. We've got this loser complex that constantly has our collective finger on the boo trigger at all times. And it brings out the "we hate booing" complex in everyone else nationwide whenever national sports news comes from our town. I wonder if we'd stop booing soon if we had multiple champions in a relatively short span of time.

Didn't mean to attack you. Well, okay, I did mean to but it wasn't malicious. As someone else pointed out I don't really read the boards too often and I noticed you do a lot of commenting so it was more to see how soon you would react and now I know. The truth, of course, is that you seem like a smart sports fan and most of what you say is on point. Even your criticism of Philadelphia I can pretty much understand, especially since you're from Seattle and they have fans who don't boo nearly as much even though the teams lose...or move away...or just have in general more to complain about. Philly? Well we complain about anything.

11/01/08, 03:14 PM
We're a defensive bunch, Scott. And we're fiercely loyal to ourselves, but not always to our teams. We don't always understand your "respect" or "humility" or even "healthy diets," but man to man, away from the message boards we are mostly great people just like most other cities. For example, I have to believe most Philadelphians wouldn't actually have booed the Rays if they had to do it over again, but in the heat of the moment they did. Some people here even boo ironically, and a lot boo just as a form of passive aggression. Not many have the foresight to realize exactly the national repercussions of being "the city that booed Santa Claus," and the part each person played in garnering that most dubious distinction. The worst, of course, are those "fans" who boo maliciously and really don't give a fuck what people think locally let alone nationally. So I definitely have understood some of your previous points. Also, a lot of people in Philly hate being lumped in with all the negativity associated with our image, which is understandable, but they don't know how to react on message boards. I'm guilty of that, too. I guess those people just have to learn to take the good with the bad.
