The Boys of Summer by Don Henley or by the Ataris?

I'd have to say by Don Henley in this case.
I'll throw 2 out.
Love Song by The Cure or 311?
Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles or Thrice? (I might get flamed for this, but I like the Thrice version better, lol, but that's just a matter of taste.)

IWasaCamera

Joe Cocker's rendition of With A Little Help From My Friends however, easily trumps the original.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley trumps the original.
Though the original is better, the cover of Turn the Lights Down Low by Lauryn Hill isn't too far off from the original.
Propagandhi's I Wnat You To Want Me is better than the original
Those were the exceptions I could think of. In most other cases, original > cover by far.
As a side note, Michael Bolton's cover of When a Man Loves a Woman is the worst thing. Ever.
The man who sold the world by David Bowie would seem to disprove that.
Hallelujah is a better example IMO since Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana makes no sense unless you've heard the Bowie album haha.

Lauren Hill's "Turn The Lights Down Low" cover is brilliant, but the original is still better. As for a cover that's better than the original, Kaki King's version of "Camp Out" is way better than the original.

And I threw the 311/Cure cover out there, because it was ridiculously overplayed on the radio when it came out, and most people know of the song. I know a ton of people who like the 311 version better. I don't.

The vast majority of it is drive-thru bands butchering Dylan and it isn't pretty. There are a few decent attempts on it though. Rx Bandits, Steel Train, Jason Mraz and a few others have some interesting takes on his tunes.

some of the first covers that come to mind as being "better" than the originals:
b.b. king & eric clapton - rock me baby (otis redding cover)
finn brothers - too many people (paul maccartney cover)
aretha franklin - respect (otis redding cover)
toots & the maytals - (take me home) country roads (john denver cover)
the slackers - wanted dead or a alive (bon jovi cover). the slackers actually managed to turn this into a decent song, i was shocked at just how good it was. especially since i can't stand the original. vic's voice has this floating feel to it, wonderful stuff
Never gonna give you up - Rick astley or ashley tisdale?
DSFKSDFJSDKLfjslkfjlsakdjfasl;
But to mention some post earlier, johnny cashes version of hurt was so much better than nine inch nails one. It kind of dissapointed me that it was actually a cover and not johnys song, especiall after hearing how SHITTY NIN was.
