I Set My Friends On Fire – You Can’t Spell Slaughter Without Laughter
Release Date: October 7, 2008
Record Label: Epitaph
Apparently there is a new formula to getting signed these days. I’ve organized the steps and have placed them here for you to replicate!
1. Take two obnoxious genres/trends and jam them in a blender. See what happens.
2. Take that new bastardization and cover a popular song currently in the Top 40.
3. Upload track to Myspace. Watch the hits increase.
4. Wait by the phone for labels to call.
And in four simple steps I have described I Set My Friends On Fire. I wish this were a joke.
Their cover of Soulja Boy’s “Crank That” set Myspace on fire, reaching over a million plays. This caught the eye of Epitaph, who signed the Miami duo. I Set My Friends On Fire enlisted From First To Last guitarist Travis Richter to produce this abomination of a debut album. I don't want to be too harsh, and I’m sure Matt Mihanna and Nabil Moo are hilarious guys, unfortunately, they just make horrible music. You Can’t Spell Slaughter Without Laughter combines the obnoxiousness of Metro Station with vanilla “br00t” screams heard in every flavor of the week Myspace screamo band.
Album opener “Sh!t It Talks…I’m Out Of Here” sets the tone of Slaughter with an alien asking the duo to perform on his home planet. Tracks like “Beauty Is In The Eyes Of The Beerholder,” and “Things That Rhyme With Orange” are misguided tracks, sometimes offering a glimmer of musical hope only to be crushed by screaming and other over-bearing programming noises. “HXC 2-Step” will make you wish you didn’t have the sense of hearing. The rendition of “Crank That” is just as bad. Sure, some may argue that Slaughter is “unique” because of the combination of the two genres, but dipping a banana into cold gravy is also “unique” and “different,” and that still will taste like shit.
The most positivity I can muster up for this record is that when they keep it on the pop side with the electronica-vibe, they are somewhat catchy. But their lame jokes and even lamer attempts at “screamo” ruin everything. Set your friends on fire? Please, I’d rather set my ears on fire.

That just brightened my day up that did xD! Abomination of a artist? - Fuck Yeah.
Are they gonna improve? - hmmm.. can't see that one happening...
Great review Drew! Does'nt look like you could add anything more witty to improve it!

This is vaguely reminiscent of the Alternative Press review, which is absolutely fine by me. I think anyone with any sense would agree that this band is terrible.
Good review.

Wow, lowest review on the site. Its definitely deserving. This album makes me cringe because its so awful. The irony is that well I read this review the banner at the top of my screen is advertising this shitty album.

I would dip a Banana into cold gravy, I love dipping food into random sauces, I once dipped a brownie into spaghetti sauce and a rice krispy treat into spinach dip. Both were awesome, but this band is not.

My God, this is truly fucking terrible stuff.
Wait are you serious?
The is an extremely low rating for this album.
While i agree that crank that and hxc 2 step are fucking horrible peices of shit songs, all the rest are extremely well created.
They almost implented a mathcore concept and it turned out nicely. Matt screams alot differently then alot of those myspace screamo bands. The music is dare i say, intellegent. They're good at flowing different styles togethor and the musicianship isn't as bad as you say.
And you make it sound like its extremely doused in electronica pop shit, which it isnt. Only a few songs have a little segment of synth, nothing to totally shit on an album for.
This cd should of gotten at least a 60%, well 40% for including those shitty songs (crank that and hxc) on the cd.
They should just throw those out the window.

Lowest scoring album until someone here reviews Brokencyde, lawl.
To be honest, I'm listening to them right now, and it's not that bad. "ASL," at least. The instrumentals and clean vocals are actually pretty sweet. Some annoying screams, but I've heard way, way worse from other scene bands. Though... now I'm getting to "But The NUNS Are Watching" -- yeah, this is pretty fucking bad.
Damn. That first track gave me fleeting hope. Oh well.
Also, their cover of "Crank That"? It sounds like they're being gutted with fishing knives. Ick.

It doesn't deserve a high score, but 10% is just stupid.

Exactly. I strained myself through the album so I could write my goddamn review, but ripping this piece of shit was not worth the pain.
Any band that covers the worst song of all time ("Crank That") and actually makes it worse cannot be worth listening to.

Nice review Drew.
I simply refuse to even attempt to listen to this because of two things...

2. The song titles are so fucking lame

No, it's not stupid. This band is probably the single worst thing ever attached to the Epitaph name. EVER. I have on good authority that Brett Gurewitz himself rejected better bands, worthier bands that implement different aspects of genres into their music because of their lack of "commercial appeal", and thus ending up with a band like this on his roster. This is a horrid band with a horrid name and a horrid album and horrid songtitles, shitting on a plethora of worthwhile music they claim to have as inspiration to their own. Awful, awful, awful.

hopefully by the weekend.
Sounds good. I'll be waiting.
yikes.
it's reviews like this that will break a band.
to tell you the truth,
i don't mind the cd.
some of the songs aren't bad, minus the intro, crack that, and idiotic hxc 2 step song.
other then that, most of the tracks are listenable but i think that fact that this band got popular off of a hardcore cover of souljah boy's hit song is kind of pathetic.
one thing i do enjoy, because my band does it, is that this band only has 2 members and only performs with 2 members live.
however, when signing to a major indie label such a Epitaph it's time to get a full piece.
just adding a drummer alone would make the band sound that much better live and look a lot less retarded (IE: youtube)
overall, maybe 10% is a little harsh but i can't blame the reviewer.
all they do is listen to tons of bands CDs..CDs that are probably better then this one.
Can we take all the horrible bands on all these labels and throw all their records into New Jersey and burn the whole thing?
hahahahahahahhaha
Jersey really does suck.

Wow. I'm definitely not a true fan of the genres these two guys put together, but I find this album very entertaining and fun. Some of the stuff is a little rediculous, but it makes me laugh, and I think that is a good quality for this album.
Besides the intro, crank that, and 2 step (pretty much agreed), I like a lot of the tracks and find them pretty cool. NUNS, Orange, ASL, and Rhinos are good, have some good transitions, and even some catchy musical parts. The screams are a bit over the top, but hey, who's screams aren't over the top nowadays?
I also think the album was very well produced, which helps out the electronica parts.
I can see why this would get horrible reviews, especially on a first listen, but I love blaring this, doin some little dances, and sharing good times with my friends that can make light of a weird genre and enjoy what two people's unique take on musicianship is. I'd MUCH rather listen to this album then say, the senses fail or i am ghost album that came out the same day (two bands that I enjoyed previous releases from).

For all the positive qualities exemplified by a band like Forgive Durden, the band portrays a solid potential in their future that I can't wait to see rocket into the sky. I think with more experience under their belt they could be the next huge thing, think Hit The Lights but much more talented and a bigger fan base. When you listen to "Razias Shadow" you aren't left with a feeling of just another blip on the expansive pop-punk radar screen, the totally demolish that blip and make their mark loud and clear, go grab this when it hits stores next Tuesday!
From that Skylinepress.net website. Razia's Shadow only got a 7.5, while You Can't Slaughter Without Overproduced Bullshit got 10/10.

Considering that this album is a complete joke that these guys probably knocked out in an afternoon it definately deserves a 10%. That being said they do have a few listenable tracks. "Things That Rhyme With Orange," "Asl," Ravenous, Ravenous, Rhinos," "WTFWJD," and "But The Nuns Are Watching." They definately parodied a lot of bands from the scene stealing riffs and progressions. If they really wanted to be rediculous they should do an acoustic version of the album, that would be hilarious.

i got the leak for this a few weeks ago and only just got around to listening to it BECAUSE of this review, lol. It's...uhm.... it's pretty goofy. As far as real music goes, these guys are shit, but I sorta look at them like a look at Weird Al. Only weird al is TRYING to be Weird Al...these guys are doing it by accident and taking themselves seriously.
Edit: Two more points. One... this album is like 15 minutes long. How many tracks under two minutes can a band put on an album and actually try to pass them off as "songs"?
Secondly... i'm hopping on the 1/10 bandwagon ... and only giving the 1 because the tragedy of it all is fairly entertaining.

There actually is an acoustic version of "Crank That" done by a band named Right Side of the Tree. It's actually kinda ...*gasp* good unlike this shitty album.

Awesome review, man. :appl:
I wrote up a little blog earlier mentioning these guys, as well as this comment:
I tend to let Epitaph slide on whatever they do but this band infuriates me. They're not a "band". They didn't play together before this, they didn't tour, they have no other material.
This is the most sadly obvious example of a label hoping to cash in on an internet hyped band. The original Soulja Boy song is like what a year old? Their remake is maybe 9 months old? And in that time they were signed, wrote, recorded and released an album? Yeah if you could cram that all into 15 minutes (as to capitalize on your fleeting image) Mr. Brett would appreciate that.

Great review. Sounds like an awful CD.
They should just throw those out the window.
mathcore? really? REALLY? come on, dude, please don't talk when you have no knowledgeable insight into the "genres" you are going to compare with. these forums have an auto-spell on them that I suggest you utilize when misspelling intelligent whilst trying to describe this poor excuse for a band. I don't hate on these kids too much because it's not their faults they got all of this exposure and got signed -- isn't that the point of making music? it makes me throw up to know they are headlining a tour ahead of bands like You, Me, And Everyone We Know -- not saying I even like YMEWK but I feel bad for any and every struggling, unsigned band that have been out there for years touring and making real art with their music while these two prepubescent scenesters suck in their few months of fame. I can't believe these people are on the same label as the Weakerthans. accurately harsh review from Drew.

I'd MUCH rather listen to this album then say, the senses fail or i am ghost album that came out the same day (two bands that I enjoyed previous releases from).
Okay, I do agree that this review is a little harsh. Those three songs (intro, Crank That, HxC 2-Step) are annoying, but every other song has its moments. "Things That Rhyme With Orange" is really catchy and the group shouts on "WTFWJD" are catchy as well. I like this CD because it blends different types of music and some of the breakdowns are sick. And quite honestly, I think these kids mean to make you laugh with the lyrics they write, have you seen their videos?
And as far as saying you would rather listen to this album over the new Senses Fail disc, you gotta be fucking high. Life Is Not A Waiting Room is the best release the band has ever come out with.

I will say this cd does suck for the most part.I think the funny thing about it is they sucker you in with like the first 2 or 3 tracks and then it just goes downhill from there. Before they even started to work on this cd.The day they got signed I was thinking well this cd is going to be a bucket full of suck. And for the most part I was right. I think it was wrong for them to sucker you in with 2 to 3 good tracks and then let there true colors show. Its like holy crap wtf happen. lam sure if they took out the shitty screaming or umm got a better screamer. Either or..will do..But yea lam sure that might help.I dunno I play the first couple of tracks and then turn to something else before suck comes in.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but another reason everyone's bashing a shit, fly-by-night, trendy band like this is because we all know of 15 bands who've worked for years, toured to death, and gone through hell to make better music than this and'll never be discovered or signed, let alone to a label like Epitaph. So for everyone who says whose right is it to judge a band like this, I'll flat out say it, they haven't earned anyone's respect yet and its BS that a "joke" (as defenders call them) can lead to label support and fame overnight.

That SkylinePress site gave the new Enslaved album a 7.5 while this piece of shit got a 10? My brother listens to this band, he jumps on any scene band, and I wanted to rip my ears off of my head. It's horrible garbage.

That SkylinePress review may or may not be a sarcastic joke. I sure hope it is.

Never have I ever heard such crap in my life.
I am ashamed to be a human being, knowing that the people who made this are human too.
Except for one time,
I was listening to the 07 Warped Tour Compilation,
and I heard this horrible horrible song...
I don't know who played it though.

Well if you really think about the CD isnt all that bad. Some of the songs are pretty good. But others just get to ridiculous. If you really think about it though, they cant be that bad because they got signed, so somebody must've like them.

Can we take all the horrible bands on all these labels and throw all their records into New Jersey and burn the whole thing?

I enjoyed it thoroughly! It's fun. That's about all I was looking for with this album and I got it. Also, the lyrics are more clever than a good chunk of the run-of-mill bullshit that gets hailed on this site. Probably not a decent live act, however.

I confess, I think "Things That Rhyme With Orange" is an okay track. But that's pretty much it.

Great review.
The "screamo" part of this band is horrible. Cut it out and these guys could be enjoyable. They're better than Brokencyde though.

I love the fact that this is under popular reviews. The reason everyone looks for it is because they want to read about how bad the CD is. Terrible terrible band. Good review but maybe the score was too high

Please stop posting in this thread. Also, just for your info, it's only rated at 3% because the reviewer didn't fill in any numeric scores. If you'd actually read the review instead of doing your pointless stupid search for the lowest rated album on ap.net, you'd understand.
Then again, I don't really take reading comprehension to be your thing.

yah i know that.... i have like 8 posts on that thread okay.... obviously i read the review.... okay? And the whole reading comprehension thing at the end was needless and retarded like this whole album. Okay? Skipping grades was my thing, not yours, although your headline thing "crunkcore..." is highly intelligent.

I agree, this album was really creative and I loved their take on the genre. Could of done better without a few songs though.' Resses Pieces' and 'NUNS' are the best songs though.

would everyone just look past the bull shit songs(crank that, hxc 2 step)
theres some good songs on here.
just listen to "Reeses Pieces I don't know who John Cleese is" there is so much variety in that song

i actually like these guys.
some songs are terrible.
others could be good but still suck.
and others are weird and fun
overall a fun band that you shouldn't take seriously, cuz they don't take themselves seriously
i wouldn't say this warrants a different review, i thought this review was great, but fun for weird people like me :D

Obviously Drew honestly thinks it's a 10%, that's his opinion, it's his review.
The album is awful to not only him though, it really is a piece of garbage.
You shouldn't say any music is garbage.. I respect any body who makes music.
I actually like this album! This band isn't trying to be serious and I love them for that.

the main problem here, is that I'm quite sure there are tons of people who honestly think this stuff is "like, SO awesome."
It's catchy, the pop gets me.

In this thread: dickheads who can't accept that people have different musical preferences and jump on the hate bandwagon. The funniest part is when some of you try to negate an entire post defending ISMFOF by pointing out a single misspelled word. You spelled a single word wrong, your argument is now invalid derp herp.
This band is very enjoyable. I don't even normally enjoy music like this, but I thought this album was solid (except Crank Dat, I agree that that is shit.)

Yeah, I agree with this guy.
It's certainly not high art. And that's where you lose pretentious d-bags.
Myself, I don't take this album any more serious than Matt and Nabil wanted it to be taken. They're two guys who were found by a label. They certainly weren't putting their hearts and souls into this album.
This is one of my favorite albums to listen to. They are much more creative and musically talented than a lot of (pretentious) people give them credit for.
