Cause they are running against the 20th and 25th ranked run defenses

And because the Denver defensive players have yet to take one correct angle on a tackle all game?

startBBtoday
10/20/08, 07:29 PM

Cause they all use the same stat source? I mean, do you really think ESPN has 16 guys to cover stats for each NFL game...and then as many for NBA, MLB, etc...and that each other outlet hires as many people to keep pace?

I'm willing to bet that each team submits it electronically from the stadium, outlets tap into, and ESPN has a few guys (or just Schwab when he's not doing his show) that verify them

right Jaws, they didn't adapt their offense to Cassel...and its never been more apparent than tonight that he isn't Tom Brady...so the Patriots DIDN'T do a smart thing by pretending he was. They expect a guy who can't find a 2nd reciever to consider 3rd, 4th, and 5th options as well...its asking to get 50+ sacks in the season

preppyak

Passer Rating is a terrible stat to gauge a QB's game on...it over-values a touchdown in comparison to yards...and since Cassel had several drives gift wrapped by Denver being awful, his rating is good. If you want to talk "game knowledge", you'd know that already, as even ESPN's analysts laugh when someone brings that stat up as proof

If you think a QB throwing 24 passes for 185yds and taking 6 sacks in the process is a great game...then just wow. He looked lost for about 1/2 the game, and the other half Denver and their terrible D was without Bailey and Bly, making them somehow worse

Do yourself a favor as a fan, don't pretend that Cassel had a great game or is the answer

He said he was awful...likely in response to a specific play...and I can think of at least 6 plays...make that 7, where he was AWFUL

The biggest thing is that he still looks uncomfortable, and somehow they haven't adjusted that offense to suit him more

Ah...well, that would be off, he had a few decent plays when they played to his strengths...but whenever they try to force him to make Brady plays, he either gets sacked, picked, or runs around in circles before throwing it away.

He could be a good game managing QB for that team, especially if it relied on running when its successful, but Bill seems determined to assume Cassel is Brady and it will work itself out.

with their RB situation, he has to try to be brady, they can't really just let him manage the game.
speaking of which did morris come back into the game or whats the status on him?

with their RB situation, he has to try to be brady, they can't really just let him manage the game. speaking of which did morris come back into the game or whats the status on him?
No idea on Morris...but I sort of disagree on the other part.

Games they won (not counting the KC game)...vs. Jets, Broncos, 49ers...they ran for over 100yds and had a reasonable amount of attempts (25-30ish). The Jets have a good run D, so that they got 100 and ran 32 times surprised me...but, they did win in an ugly game. THAT is going to be their style under Cassel. The fewer the plays and possessions the better...less chance for them to make mistakes

When they lost to Miami, they abandoned the run even before the game was out of hand...Cassel throws 30+ passes...they lose. The Chargers was a bit different cause they did try to run and their defense just got shredded to the point it didn't matter what they tried...but again, Cassel 30+ throws = loss.

Their style should be like Big Ben's first season but with less run expectation. The Steelers expected to have 100yds from their starting back and 150+ overall...that was their offense and scoring...and Ben would make plays when needed to score more. For Cassel, give him the occasional play action pass to Moss and the occasional dump off to Welker, to mix in with the run, and you are in a lot of close games you can win if your defense holds.

But...what they did tonight at the start was assume Cassel was Brady and throw on downs where they should have run...especially against Denver...and only got FG's cause Cassel doesn't have the progressions. When their running game started getting 15 yard gains, then they went more to it...and bam, game wide open. Its not the perfect example, cause Denver's D is possibly the worst I've seen so far, but it is what I'm talking about.

If the Pats expect Cassel to win games for them to make the playoffs...they won't be playing in January...and in their next 6 games, 3 of the teams are in the bottom half against the run, the Dolphins are 12th, and only the Jets and Steelers have solid run defenses. Why wouldn't they run more? Win those games by a touchdown each maybe...go 4-2 in that stretch (especially if the can beat the Jets again)...and they probably have a wild-card berth pretty well set up, maybe even the division. If Cassel is throwing 30-35 passes though, he's making too many mistakes for them to win (like getting sacked left and right)

Lamont Jordan, Morris, and Faulk aren't great running backs, but between them they can run 25 times for 100+ yds against mediocre defenses...get a couple FG's, hope Welker or Moss breaks off for a big play...probably win

edit: This is just from having seen 4 of their games and looking through the stats...so maybe I'm off there...but when they beat the Jets, it was with simplicity, not complexity like last year
