View Full Version : What Bands Do You Want To See On The 2009 Warped Tour?

I didn't go to this year's Warped because the only bands I really wanted to see was Norma Jean, Every Time I Die, and Protest the Hero. But next year, I really hope they can get back to what Warped Tour is all about and get some PUNK bands out there. Not just punk, but make the majority of it punk, and I guess Katy Perry, M.I.A, and Shwayze can play the side stages. I really want to Circa Survive out there again, because they were great in '07. Bad Brains maybe? Copeland isn't really a Warped Tour band, but I would love to see that. Tokyo Police Club? Four Year Strong, most definetely. And the following:

-Boys Night Out
-Parkway Drive
-Envy On The Coast
-Valencia
-Alexisonfire
-Lower Definition
-Memphis May Fire
-Authority Zero
-No Use For A Name
-Mustard Plug
-Goldfinger
-NOFX
-Rancid
-Swingin' Utters

(Yes, I'm aware some of you guys out there hate the tour. Even though you'll probably end up going. Just say your snarky comment.)

I went this year:

shwayze: put on a good show, cisco is better live because he's an entertainer
every time I die: awesome, like to see them again
from first to last: no sonny but I do like their self titled album, good show
ava: still good
set your goals: decent

I'd like to see team goldie, cobra (they were awesome as usual), 3oh!3, Valencia, grand national, crisis in hollywood, mikoto, fei comodo, a rocket to the moon. I doubt some of them will play: most of decaydence will be there (no FOB though). will be interesting

Your warped tour would be boring, except for Say Anything.
I'd say:
Against Me!

Just made me so much sadder. I was going to skip next warped tour but if NoFX is going.. :-(

Yeah. I wanted to go see SYG and one of the local bands at Tampa's warped, but I didn't feel like paying for everybody's ticket, since I don't drive, and that's basically how I pay people back for transporting me places.

I have attended 9 warped tours. 1999, 2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006,2007, 2008, and this year (2008) was by far the worst year ever. This is no longer the same tour it started off being. It has evolved into a teeny bopper dance pop tour with little to no good bands left on the tour. You bring in all these newer bands with zero credibility and in come the worst crowds ever. Warped tour is not even cool anymore. It used to actually mean something, and it was a nice break from the mainstream crowd. Over the last couple years as this type of music has become watered down and more popular the warped tour has gone down hill immensely. I know if there are some other warped tour Veterans like myself they would see things exactly the way I see them. I am going to retire from warped tour if this year is as bad as '08. It will be the end of an era and a sad day, but I would rather have my memories of when this tour was actually the greatest thing on earth.

K: Do you feel pressured by the ‘punks’ you know will jump onyou at every given opportunity, every perceived misdeed? You even took flak for signing to Fat. Is it an issue?

C: Of course, we don’t mind criticism. Often, it can aid in self-reflection. That said, punks are generally idiots. They go to warped tour. They listen to Rancid. They vote Democrat. Who gives a fuck what a "punk" thinks?

EDIT: And this band's first album came out when I was an infant.

bragging? no. I was simply stating that warped tour has consistently gotten way worse over the years. In recent years some of the particular bands I named play a great brand of poppunk. Of course not every album from each said bands discography is a gem, but are good live bands to see on warped tour. Some of the bands these days who dub themselves as "poppunk" are merely pop bands with no punk elements simply trying to cash in on what is popular at the moment. Nothing will beat '99 warped tour. Blink 182, Dropkick Murphys, Millencollin, Less than Jake, The living End, Vandals, Zebrahead, bouncing souls, pennywise, unwritten law ect... You look at those bands that played almost ten years ago and compare it to what is typically playing at more recent warped tours. How can you even compare. Half the bands on Warped these days are boy bands with guitars around there shoulders that care more about their hair and how tight their jeans are. In the past this was a punk/ska festival for the most part. With a few diverse well respected acts thrown in for good measure. It is not the same tour anymore.

i've never liked that brand of pop punk so that decline doesn't affect me in the least (aside from NoFX, exception to that rule..). Only pop punk bands I listen to sound like Descendents/Screechign Weasel/Queers knockoffs  (and they came out a decade before I was born!)

When I started going to warped tour you were pretty hard pressed to find anybody you knew who went to warped tour. Back in '99 EVERYBODY was listening to rap music. I was one of the few people in my whole group of friends and acquaintances who was getting excited for Blink to release enema in '99. Everyone else was busy spinning horrible gangster rap, which I could never get into. So when I first went to warped it felt genuine. Since it wasn't the "cool" place to be back in '99 it felt good to be somewhere with like minded people who dug the same kind of music and culture as you. These days what used to just simply be considered punk music is now referred to by the online youth of america as "the scene." The community I grew up on and loved is now over flowing with people who are simply imposters whether they are aware of it or not and many are here because they think they are part of something cool. Which was the opposite when I was a kid. I got into punk and in return distanced myself from the "cool" crowd. Things have really drastically changed.

Both Enema and Dude Ranch went gold in the respective year they came out (Enema went multi plat a year later and Dude Ranch went plat after Enema came out).. so there were a lot of people that liked htem already... regardless of whether or not said people went to warped in 99.'

EDIT: Actually dude ranch went gold in 98 not 97, so was off a year. oops. Thougbh it was less than a year after coming out..

yes Dude ranch went gold very quietly. Trust me back then and I can say this I was old enough to remember you were hard pressed to find a Blink 182 fan. I understand dude ranch was gold but that is merely a number, blink was not widely received till after enema came out. Enema is what projected blink into the mainstream. I had bought Enema the day it came out, I was actually so excited I was giving a friend a ride home from school and got a ticket for running a yellow light. Back in '99 Absolutepunk.net didn't even exist. There was not an online community for hundreds of thousands of fans back then. Everything was still underground. I found this site because before it was ap.net I would search for blink and mxpx pictures and found this site, (which formally was a blink/mxpx fansite). I then joined this site officially in '02. My point is, back in the day punk rock was still pretty underground. You were definitely not part of the mainstream for liking punk music. Back then the only Emo music we discussed was sunny day realestate and fugazi. These days emo is a household name. I could go on. Everything has gone mainstream and gotten way way worse over the years.

You're complaining about shit noone currently cares about. Warped Tour has been shit (judging by the bands that you yourself posted) for years. You complain that people who are younger than you aren't old enough to know shit about punk and then condemn them for listening to bands that are currently in their generation. If you hate these bands so much do what every other punk fan does, skip it and go to the Fest.

WOW. I grew up on blink 182 and mxpx since I WAS a teenager. So go figure. Just because their audiences got huge (blink 182 not mxpx) doesn't mean I will stop liking them. Besides Lagwagon just did a co headlining tour with mxpx. Life in general is a great fast aggressive pop punk record, it surpasses anything today that tries to imitate it. Also, I do listen to all of your said bands. I kinda of highly doubt Black Flag or decendents will be on warped anytime soon. Henry Rollins only does spoken word tours. And to further make you look like a incompetent loser, I did put Nofx as a band I want to see on next years warped. I could go on. If you read my previous posts I explain how Warped was way better back in the day, and how it has become very watered down. Each of the Bands I listed have more integrity than a lot of the bands that are playing warped these days. I used to watch Ataris back when they were more skatepunk when they toured with limp and diesel boy. Same with NFG, I had heard about them when they became the band of the year in Florida way back when.

The fest should never tour. To sum up my feeling on why Fest should stay just for a weekend,

Well, I don’t really want to get into my aesthetic opinions of the bands or the tour, but I feel very strongly that the Warped Tour is no good for other reasons. See, there used to be this really great thing that happened every summer. All the big bands would gather up some cool support bands and hit the road and play club shows. Now, you figure at any given time there are maybe thirty big punk rock bands, each of those bands are taking two or three smaller bands on tour and playing in clubs. So, that’s (approximately) ninety bands that have cool tours, and thirty shows that support clubs and thirty nights for kids in various towns to have something cool to do. Now, all those big bands just play the warped tour. It’s one day, and it’s in some stupid fairground. As a result, small clubs are shutting down, small bands are forced to either play warped tour (which totally sucks. Try driving all night, and standing in the sun all day only to play some shitty outdoor stage to ten kids for no money while rancid plays 100 feet away…) or do a small headlining tour that’s competing with the warped tour. That blows. Now, I’m not even trying to bitch overtly about the fact that warped tour is a big stupid corporate event and everything’s expensive and the bands on it tend to suck. I’m more pissed that this goliath posing as the ‘ultimate manifestation of punk rock’ is completely dismantling the DIY economy and no one seems to care. These fucking bands who could do something about it are lazy or scared or both and it drives me nuts. People say things like “oh, it’s like punk rock summercamp” or ‘It’s great to be able to sell so much merch and only play for half an hour.” Fuck all that. The warped tour sucks and I don’t give a shit how many of your friends are on it or how fucking little you have to work in order to get paid. Chances are, if you’re in a big punk rock band you got into this with at least an inkling of a feeling that doing something that can completely thrive in an alternative, underground economy was pretty cool, and now, they’re sitting on their busses letting all that be destroyed…actively participating in destroying it even! And the reasons for doing it are so fucking shallow. I mean, my shitty little band tours up against the warped tour every summer, so I’d assume that any band could. They’re just complacent and until more people start realizing how completely shitty the whole thing is, it’s not going to go away. It’s just gonna get worse.

I think it would be cool if instead of a summer-long jam packed festival, they just shortened it to the fall season only, and just had a condensed number of the best bands. Sure, that completely contradicts what the festival was started on (and is during the school season, so weekends only?), but hey, maybe they could call it warp speed tour or something.
