View Full Version : Going on welfare / getting unemployment insurance
So I have this plan where I will receive money by one of the means stated in the title.
I could google all the information I want, but it will be funner this way.
Are there any problems I will face in trying to acquire either welfare or unemployment insurance? Any qualifications I will need to meet? Exactly how easy and how much of this free money can I suck out of the government?
Is this a bad idea?

Twist the nipples of those who bark, you need to push and probe in order to obtain anything in life.
Haha, I've just applied for unemployment in Minnesota. They estimate the free money they will be sending me to be about $69 a week.

Also, it isn't "free" money. Are you that ignorant?

I think this is the only correct answer.

Why? I don't have a job, so legally I'm just as entitled to it as any other American.
I know it isn't "free" in the true sense of the word, you presumptuous knave. I merely meant free in the sense that I'm a part of a socio-economic system in which the taxes I duly pay can actually, for a change, be used to my own personal advantage, allowing me to spend them any way I see fit, freely.
I've seen a lot of responses on why not to do this, yet no actual reasons to back up the claims. And that's what I'm mostly looking for.

you dont have a job so you dont pay taxes. you are just taking without giving.
and to give you the benefit of the doubt that you previously had a job, so you previously paid taxes and that is what you were talking about, then i would like to know more about the situation. were you laid off or let go? or did you just quit because you didn't like it?
the purpose of the system is to help people survive when they lost their job NOT because they are lazy.

Huh? I think we are on the same side...so I dont really get your comment.
Unemployment benefits are important with regards to layoffs(which happen more often than we would hope). So to completely do away the system would be idiotic. Which in turn means, people that DO have jobs, think unemployment benefits are important.
HOWEVER, there is a complete misuse of the system. Unemployment is supposed to be used in hard times not when you are just too lazy to work(OP). They are to be used as a crutch for that time you go to work and your boss says, I'm sorry you no longer have a job here because we can't afford you. You then have to come up with bills, food for your family, etc. That is why unemployment is there. Not so you can buy your cigarette's without spending your own money to support your habit.

Well i guess that could make sense but still printing money does not solve problems look at Germany Post WWI. Printing 7 billion dollars is just never a good idea.

I know that the purpose of the system is to help people with their income when they lose a job, not to help people because they are lazy. In practice does the system work this way? Ha! (BTW, I'm not lazy. I just don't like working mindless, unskilled jobs.)
I don't agree with the system and I don't approve of it. But since it's in place, and because, in theory, it's my own money that I'm getting back, I have no qualms about using (or abusing) it.
The government has chosen to implement such a system and collectively fuck liberty and justice (yes, liberty and justice), so I'm going to fuck them in return. Even though I'm not fucking them because I'm going about it entirely within the confines of the law by using the system they themselves set up, so I see no problem with it.
In fact, it could be argued that this assistance in monetary form from the government will help me to get through college easier and far more effectively. So presumably I will be able to do better in school without the hassle of a "normal" job. Then, when I finally do get my degree, I can contribute to society in whichever way I choose by using that degree, ultimately going above and beyond to pay off any "debt" I have with the government. :-)

I was saying that it could be useful for the British government councils who had large sums of money in the icelandic banking system (which just collapsed completely). For example, my local council lost about £5m, so over $9m. If you print the money and give it to those councils, it was in the bank, it's not going to get spend for a while and so will, therefore, be injected into the economy in controlled amounts. Not only that, but it's also not putting any new money in, just replacing the capital that was already there.
oh, I know. I meant it more like why would he even bother?
Haha, I live in a dorm. I don't pay any bills. The only things I truly need to buy are food and drink, plus the occasional school charge for whatever it happens to be.
Also, it amuses me that everyone instantly jumped to the conclusion that I'm a lazy ass who doesn't want a job since I'm applying for unemployment. And it's only because my situation doesn't fit the typical situations you have where people are applying for unemployment.

You don't have a meal plan? I can see why you would want the money, but you don't really need it, unless you don't have a meal plan, so technically the government shouldn't give it to you but if you can convince them, more power to you I wouldn't mind getting 69 dollars a week for doing nothing.

So you're using the whole "since everyone else is jumping off the bridge you are going to too" mentality. That is EXACTLY what is wrong with this society. People feel that they have a inherent right to a certain lifestyle and that they DESERVE getting money from the government. You're not fucking the government. You are fucking people. The government will exist whether you do this or not. Because you are going to do this, taxes could go up, more jobs could be lost(big picture..not just because you are doing this) because companies cant afford taxes and many other problems could happen.
There are school loans out there and government assistance(look into your programs at fafsa.gov) which will help pay for your bills so you can focus on your studies. Plus later on the interest on the loans are a tax write off, so pretty much they are paying you to go to school.
As for the "right" kind of job. Very few people find it. But people need to survive so they suck it up and do the job. You need to get out of the I, Me, Mine mentality and focus on a bigger picture.

Nah, I'm not really a part of that mentality, if I implied it. I was only saying that that is how it happens to work, how people use the system in practice. My reasons for choosing to use the system were described farther down in my post. (And obviously the government will continue to exist regardless of any action I take. I only wish this one specific system wouldn't exist. Quite the shame that it's a total pipe dream, though.)
I've looked into school loans and various forms of aid and all that, but the qualifications for meeting those are really not very good in my case. Plus I really don't want the burden of having to pay back loans.

Once again that is the sense of entitlement that I talked about earlier. "Your" money is being used for other things too. Road repair, paying teachers, officers, hospitals and other government employees in which work hard to make sure we have the blessings and safety that this nation grants us. The government isn't taking money out of your check and hording it just so it could sit there. They are using it to better the place that we call home. Yes you can apply for unemployment. Yes you can even receive it even though you should be working instead. But by doing that you are being selfish and pretty much a waste to the productivity and the betterment of the society we live in. Do what you want. These are all opinions on here, some being more educated than others.
Personally I just strongly disagree with what you suggested on doing.

This is called abusing the system. If you need money get a job plain and simple.
Dumb plan. If you are able-bodied and can work you should just suck it up and do it. Yes the job will likely be tedious and mindless, but doing that is part of growing up. Do you really think you're just going to step fresh out of college and land your dream job immediately? Actually you might learn something from a "mindless" job since you don't seem to know much about life so far based on your posts.
