I'm probably gonna lose scene points for this, but my recommendation is to STAY AWAY from Say Anything.
I saw them with Recover/Armor for Sleep last night in St Louis, and I was absolutely shocked that people like that. Tons of kids were getting into it, and I was bored out of my skull. I would have rather been anywhere else. I thouroughly disliked them.
The music was decent, but I thought the singer/lyrics were just horrific.
Any thoughts?

I'm sorry to hear you don't like them, but could you go into a little bit more detail as to why you don't like the lyrics?

The main thing I remember about the lyrics were from the Spider Song and from Yellow Cat/Red Cat. Spider Song was just freaking creepy and I don't understand it. "I'm growing legs, I'm the spider, crawl inside her"
Yellow Cat/Red Cat had an annoying chant at the end of "Yellow Cat/Red Cat" that never seemed to stop.

I suggest you download the album from someone then judge. You are obviously misinformed that their lyrics are horrible. Say Anything wrote possibly the best lyrics of 2004.

Yea, you don't like them? I think that Armor for Sleep's "Things to do when you are dead" blows "Say Anything ....is a real boy" out of the water. They are far more innovative in my opinion. If you boil it down, you can make the arguement that just about every "emo" band has written concept albums about growing up and not being "right".

I have the album, my friend gave me a copy. He loves them. I don't.
I've also read the lyrics. They are ok. I read them today after I posted all these things. I wouldn't say they are horrible anymore, but "Spidersong" has horrible lyrics. However, I don't think I would say they are the best of 2004. I'm also not a big fan of the songs, live or recorded. I think it's decent, but nothing special.

You added more words than needed to that sentence. The actual sentence should read, "I think that Armor for Sleep's "Things to do when you are dead" blows."

You think that AFS has better lyrics that SayAnything? Comparison Test:

"Believe the news, I'm gone for good.
Call off the search, no one will know that im down here
Believe the note i left for you
You can't turn back the clocks, you can't pull me up from here so don't even try"

or

"You spend your time sitting in circles with your friends
Pontificating to each other
Forever competing for that one moment of self-aggrandizing glory
In which you hog the intellectual spotlight
Holding dominion over the entire shallow pointless conversation
Oh, we’re not worthy"

Alright, you can be rude about it, but bottom line is this. I'm simply stating my opinion. I've been very careful not to bash Say Anything fans, and I've been careful to make sure I always say IN MY OPINION, or I THINK. I'm not telling you what to think about the band, you can make that decision on your own, which you obviously already have. But don't come on here telling me what I should think and how I should feel about a band.
I find Say Anything's songs to be boring. I enjoy the concept of "What To Do When You're Dead", I think it's more original. I found it to be a better album than "Say Anything is a Real Boy".
You seem to disagree with me. I have no problem with that, GET OVER IT.

Is a Real Boy was my Deja Entendu of 04. Its amazing from start to finish, and I hated Spidersong at first, but now I absolutely adore it. And trust me, SA's musicianship, live show, lyrics, everything else is superior to AFS. I love the new Armor CD but it cant touch IaRB.

i think the thing about say anything, it's either hit or miss at first listen. most hits are home runs, and for some people even grand slams. but for those who didn't enjoy it at first, they should give it a few more listens (as they should for every cd), but this especially because it will grow on you.

i dont know why you deuchebags flip out on the guy because he didnt like say anything. i enjoy say anything, but not as much as these rabid fans do. lets look at the facts:

Max is an incredible asshole.
as previously stated.... every emo band has written something similar to "...is a real boy."
admit it!!! is a good song, yes... but all it really is..... is just one man stating something about hipsters that everyone whos spent more than a year in the scene already knows.
the new armor for sleep cd is actually pretty good.
the locust is better than both.

so, shut everyone up on here, because its obvious most of you are idiots for calling out a guy who is calling out a decent band on a poor performance.

It sucks how people always have to bring other bands into it just for the sake of bashing them. the threadstarter was just stating his opinion on Say Anything. The thread wasn't meant to be Armor For Sleep Vs. Say Anything. Thankfully it seems to have turned the corner on that though. Personally, I did like some stuff I heard from Say Anything's "Is A Real Boy"....however, I need to give the whole album more listens before passing a stronger judgement on them.

I think it's cool if you don't want to like SA. I enjoy them, especially their old music. A Walk Through Hell, Try To Remember Forget, and Signal the Rifleman are 3 incredible songs. Is a Real boy is great too.

I dislike his voice but I think his lyrics are brilliant and humorous and the music is awesome. I also agree that his live show is a little much with the weird head bangs and awkward stomping, however he sounds good and that's all I care about (plus he's definately not an asshole to whoever said that.. he has an anxiety disorder so he is so shy and seems unfriendly but he's SUCH a nice guy).

I can't agree with that statement. Name some emo bands that have written something to Say Anything.

They are crazy original, I have never heard anything like it. Granted, the old album "Baseball" was boring and easily forgettable, but Is A Real Boy is truly one of the best albums of 2004.

How many people have tried to break down the lyrics instead of reading over them?

I can't agree with that statement. Name some emo bands that have written something to Say Anything.

They are crazy original, I have never heard anything like it.

the following bands have better lyrics than say anything or have written a better LYRICAL album than ...is a real boy

the blood brothers- burn piano island burn... . "ambulance vs. ambulance" is better than anything max could ever come up with
the mars volta- anything the volta has touched has ripped say anything a new asshole.
against me!- reinventing axl rose... "Those Anarcho Punx Are Mysterious" and "Pints Of Guiness Make You Strong" are so much better than the max himself.
refused- refused puts these snobby little pricks in their place

now i know what youre gonna say.... those arent "emo" bands.... so ill beat you in your own element.

thursday- "war all the time" and "full collapse" both better musically and lyrically
jawbreaker- pretty much anything jawbreaker wrote is better than you.
the promise ring- same as above
jets to brazil
christie front drive
slowdown virginia- the singer went on to write and sing for some band named cursive, which reminds me....
cursive
the good life
bright eyes- if you think max is better than conor in any way, you are wrong
elliott smith- he rocks your face, but im sure youve never heard of him
death cab/ DNTL/ the postal service/ kind of like spitting

and if youve never heard anything like say anything..... i would suggest some things to expand youre musical mind.... refused, at the drive in, fugazi, black flag, minor threat, the mars volta, john coltrane, miles davis, eyedea and abilities, sage francis, the lawrence arms......

but if you think say anything is that original, then you'd probably suffer a bladder explosion upon hearing any of said bands.

it's a matter of opinion if they have better lyrics or not.

I do love most of the bands you mentioned, but I still think that Say Anything's lyrics appeal to me the most, except for maybe Cursive.

But I totally don't see the comparison to either Thursday or Refused, when the lyrical style is a different one. There's worlds between those bands.

Why not add Saosin in there, too, for good measure? I mean, they have lyrics about "ion change" and "perching on stilts". Ain't that awesome?

First of all I did not challenge you, I challenged MorningStar x0x. If you read his post, he says,

I asked him to give me an example of better lyrics from 2004. Not you. But when you did reply, you replied with lyrics from "stuff" not released in 2004. I never said Say Anything has the best lyrics in the world, that would be retarted - for the lack of a better word. Not only did you reply with lyrics from past years, but you also used unworthy Say Anything lyrics. What about these lyrics?

"You spend your time sitting in circles with your friends
Pontificating to each other forever competing for that one moment of self aggrandizing glory
In which you hog the intellectual spotlight
Holding dominion over the entire shallow pointless conversation "

"All the words in my mouth that the scene deemed unworthy of letting out banded together
To form a makeshift militia and burrowed bloodily through my tongue and my teeth.
I stood proud in the gallery with my open socket of a mouth for them to see."

"Lou is bugged and shot up with drugs. He sweats this bird he hardly knows. All that he wants is to see someone he respects without their clothes so like some hybrid mother/lover she’d soothe and heal his wounds and kiss those dying ears so softly that the reaper stops to swoon."

I'm not here to start a fight, I just want to know what band from 04 can top these lyrics.

In my opinion, the reason why I think SA had the best lyrics of 04 is because I 'identified' (so lame, I know) with everything Bemis said. Woe is perfect lyrically in my opinion (that whole end verse is amazing) and the mix of lust and tender love in 'Alive...' is just so awesome.

I don't know. I love this band. Not because of Tate. I hated Belt the first time I heard it, but because I realized how this guy was everything I liked. A real sarcastic asshole who knows he's good, but is also extremely insecure and I liked that about them.

I dont like Say Anything as previously stated...but when I saw him live he seemed to be happy and interacted with myself and the people in the front row. He seemed like a pretty nice and normal guy, but I didnt talk to him or anything.

Yes, but you missed the other part. Hes insanely insecure. He's both, and from what I've heard he's pretty down to earth at shows.
So let me get this straight. He knows how good he is(i.e.-full of himself, not modest at all) yet he's down to earth?
I don't claim to know it all, but I just don't get that one at all.

why would i shut up? i'm trying to recive more negative scene points, are you really going to deprive me of that?

I do think we are all equal. Guess what, that guy takes shits, he bleeds, he needs air and food to survive, just like me. Is he a better musician than I am? You bet he is. Does that make him better than myself? Nope, not on the grand scale of things.

I mean, I know the MTV, People Magazine, Seventeen Magazine crowd drools over which dress JLo will be wearing next, but I really didn't think this scene acted that way. I could care less about that type of stuff. They are more famous than I am, yes, but why does that make them better? Should I admire them because they can write catchy songs? Should I admire them because they are doing something for a living that, at this point, I only dream about? Or should I admire someone like my father, or Martin Luther King, Jr?

Sorry, I didn't mean anarchism and communism together would work, I meant that as seperate forms of "government", both have advantages. I think Communism is a good concept, and I think Anarchsm is a good concept. I didn't mean to make it sound like a combination would be a good thing, because that makes no sense at all.

If you wrote good lyrics, and were in a good band that's pretty well-known, then you would be a big deal. You're not a bad person in the sense that you are inferior to Max Bemis (you're just crazy, because you hate Say Anything.) Max Bemis is better than you because he can write better songs than you can. But you're probably - maybe - better than Max Bemis in some aspects. In any case, you're probably better looking. You're not inferior to Max Bemis because he's a better person. You're inferior to Max Bemis because people care more about him than you. You're inferior to him because you can never hope to be anywhere near where he is.

Oh, and I don't get how the whole MTV, People Magazine thing fits in at all. Are you comparing Max Bemis's songwriting skills to Jennifer Lopez's next dress? Because that's just wrong.

Should I admire them because they can write catchy songs? Should I admire them because they are doing something for a living that, at this point, I only dream about?

1-I stand by my statement that Max Bemis is NOT a better person than I am simply because he's in a popular band. He is not furthering society in any way by what he is doing. In fact, from what I have heard, he has a serious drug problem and been in and out of rehab. I stand by my statement that we are all equal.

2-I was simply saying that we looked up to "rock stars" so much because they write lyrics we like, which is similiar to how people in the pop music genre will care so much about JLo's dress. Maybe a little far fetched of an example, but what I'm saying is it's ok to like Max Bemis' lyrics, or to like JLo's dress, but to look at them as being better than someone just because of that fact is rediculous.

3-I apologize, I could NOT care less.

First of all I did not challenge you, I challenged MorningStar x0x. If you read his post, he says,

"big deal? you still need to listen to bands with better lyrics either way. cause say anything surely doesn't have the best lyrics of 2004."

I'm a she.

and Tony mentioned some of the better lyrics of 2004, but some of my favourites:

album of the year ~ the good life
from a basement on the hill ~ elliott smith
shake the sheets ~ ted leo
set yourself on fire ~ stars
violence in the snowy fields ~ dolorean
e before i ~ carissa's wierd
trial of the century ~ french kicks

there's plenty, really. say anything doesn't have the best lyrics around. you just have to check out other bands and give them a chance, too. and as I said above.. I'm not talking about bands that are hyped here on ap. cause lets face it, most bands that are popular on this website have the most cliche lyrics, and they all sound the same. at least to me they do anyway.

Actually, you said Max Bemis is "better than his fans". I simply said I love Aaron Carter because he loves to party.
