SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - The 21-year-old winner of a competition to drink the most tequila died Monday and three other contestants were gravely ill in the hospital, officials said.

Ricardo Garcia drank more than 50 shots of tequila Sunday night at a Santo Domingo disco to win the prize worth $400 Cdn at a Mexican night celebration.

But he was taken ill, hospitalized and died within hours, apparently from heart failure brought on by alcohol poisoning, said public prosecutor Jose Hernandez Peguero.

Three other contestants remained in serious condition in the hospital, family members said.

"The doctors told me that they were reserving their prognosis but that all his vital signs were under control," said Santiago Abreu, father of contestant Edilberto Abreu.

Interesting drinking story about when I went down to the Dominican Republic to visit my family a couple of years ago.

So there was this friend of my mom's and all of us(me, her, and her high school class) we're going to a place called Punta Cana for a class reunion and my mom brought me along because she knew that I needed some air conditioning. And so on the bus ride over there this guy drank a whole bottle of Rum and he comes up to me with half of his shirt soaked in it and looks at me and says in Spanish "Anthony, Dominican men can't get drunk." Of course while saying that he had slurred and damn near fell down. My mom's friends are interesting... and rich.

I once couldn't puke after taking a shot of tequila because I still had the lime in my mouth and I was too drunk to just instantly spit it out, I had to think of what to do... tequila is just a bad thing for me, give me some Southern Comfort
