I just started playing acoustic guitar and I was wondering what is the best way/place to learn the important things (ie scales and chords) I know I can just go and find tabs but I want to become a better musician
I do have 5 years piano experience if that makes a difference

Well, with piano playing experiance up your sleeve you should find it really easy to get into acoustic guitar. Im guessing you have experiance in theory as well?
I would just start belearning all the different chord shapes along with their sufficent scales, learning all the notes of the fretboard would be mega useful as well. Take things at your own pace and try making up your own chord patterns and riffs along the way, practice using pentatonic scales to improve your soloing and improv.
If you want total basics, this is a good site

There are tons of ways to think about the guitar. Most people just learn a few scales. Some use different methods like the CAGED guitar method, It really all comes down to two things in my opinion: the style of music you are into and what works for the way you think. You might invest in a few different guitar books and see which works the best for you. Ther'es the Hal Leonard guitar method book, Uncle Tim's Building Blocks, books on the CAGED method I mentioned and tons of others. Often you can find some info about these online before you drop money on the actual books. You might learn better through videos or computer programs too I don't know.
I still feel that the best guitar theory I ever learned was actually in an article that was written for bassists. The link is here: http://www.basstabarchive.com/cgi-bin/lesson.cgi?lesson=bass4.txt
After I read that I knew about twice as much as before, but that was early on when I was learning guitar and bass. I still feel that this is the best single article I've ever seen on theory as seen from a stringed instrument standpoint.
You could just buy a little chord book at you local bookstore or just google the chords you want to learn. Chords are great for beginning but as you progress you find that just messing around on your own actually helps you improve a lot too.
Practice, practice, practice/mess around.

Heres a good list of chords:

The best way to learn is to learn from an experienced guitar player, but if you don't want to do that I recomend learning a few chords, then playing a song including them. This way the chords stick in your mind. Repeat this process untill you know a respectable amount of chords, and then just move on to melodies.
learn open chords, then learn the blues scales up and down the neck.
add in learning songs from your favorite bands + practicing everyday and you should be ready to go in no time.
also, playing with someone who is at a similar level but maybe a bit better will help you improve drastically.
