Civet - Hell Hath No Fury
Record Label: Hellcat Records
Release Date: September 9, 2008

“Femme Fatale Punk Rock” is the phrase used to describe California’s Civet. When I first read this description, I imagined that girl from the Max Payne video game series (Mona Sax, I think her name was). However, I was a little disheartened to find that the girls from Civet were not based in a noir film, but when I discovered they were a punk band, I grew a little more curious.

Civet is definitely a punk band, and they deliver. The first song, “Alibis,” hits at breakneck speed and made me excited for what was to come. The next song, and the lead single, “Son Of A Bitch”, is in a similar vein. It is a fantastic choice for a single, as it’s quite catchy and equally enjoyable. As “Pay Up” started to flow through my speakers, I started to notice that this song was also in the same vein as the previous two songs. In fact, most of the songs sounded the same. The only cut that deviates from this sound is “Gin and Tonic,” my favorite track off Hell Hath No Fury.

That’s not to say it’s a bad record, though. It’s just very mediocre. Liza Graves is great on lead vocals, but the musicianship is nothing to write home about. The songs all follow the same formula and are structured nearly exactly the same. Overall, the band shows potential, but they really need to work to get to it. They need to vary the song structure every once in a while, or else the next record will be another very boring 35 minutes.

The Distillers; Tim Armstrong; punk; medio-core
