haha too cool? yea mate, if you enjoy any of the songs you'll like the love you moon album. i only just got the full thing myself, but a lot of people say it sounds a little "same same" at times. but the more you listen the more it'll open up. very cool album

like most people, love their first couple albums, & enjoyed songs rather than the entire album from the past few releases. but the new album kicks ass haha. it's oasis back on top with that huge guitar sound & straight up rock feel

I'd say it's between Nada Surf, Coldplay, Search/Rescue, DCFC, or Kay Kay. new Forgive Durden will probably be a contender as well.
also, I really want to get new Oasis soon. I've heard nothing but great things. Whats The Story has been on some heavy rotation lately

the new oasis is one of the best straight up rock albums released in.... oh so long. while it's not overly boundary breaking, for some reason it still sounds so so fresh & just has this really appetising quality to it. the whole album is strong & holds up after numerous repeated listens. recommended
here's the new single, in case you two hadn't heard it yet. drum solo! haha

Yeah the songwriting is pretty much flawless. Not many bands combined such naturally opposed genres without BTBAM style lameness.
Also the piano playing is phenomenal as are the vocals.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell. It might not be anything groundbreaking, maybe not even the "best" album to come out this year (there's been some amazing stuff) but it's easily the most consistent album of the year, and everytime I listen I'm blown away at the songwriting, craftmanship, performance, and production. It's just one great pop song after another, it never lets up.
I haven't decided on an order for the rest of my 2008 list, but in the hunt are the new Sigur Ros, LP3 by Ratatat, Evil Urges by My Morning Jacket, Falling Off Lavender Bridge by Lightspeed Champion, Raise The Dead by Phantom Planet, and The Long Forgotten Friend by Dreamend.

i can't believe how easily panic at the disco pulled the wool over everyone's eyes with their new album. with their last album, they attracted that barely teenage girl crowd with their wildly drag-esque looks & radio friendly nonsense, for which they generally received poor critical responses & were the butt of many jokes from those within the musical community. so they "matured" on their follow up & because they borrowed/stole a pop-punk'ed version of the beatles they suddenly receive this unspoken level of respect by everyone. i don't get it, it's still the same old crap. one mention of the beatles & many people are in awe. or perhaps i'm crazy & just don't get it haha

They don't do it necessarily well, and I dislike the band and pretty much harbor no respect for them, but the beatles sound does make them stick out a little bit from the other scene bands.

well "respect" might be a little bit of an embellishment haha. but compare how they are viewed as a band now to how they were on their debut. while they're still not exactly a critics favourite, there certainly isn't the same level of disdain there once was. the amount of times i've seen people share the sentiment of "sure they ripped off the beatles, but the beatles are one hell of a band to copy" in an accepting manner... just surprises me is all mate. if people are fans, so be it, each to their own. i just don't understand the difference in opinion between the two albums

My god thank the lord someone finally agrees with me on Thrice. Honestly, I'm so freaking perplexed as to their appeal. I bought that ambulance album when it came out and gave it to my brother who I figured would like that music. He didn't get it either.
As for the weakerthans, no I'm not sure. They're all in their 30s so I fear they're done, but I have nothing to back it up. Honestly, I'd be okay if they just released albums without touring for them. They all (or at least most of them) have families, so the band/touring isn't really atop their priorities. It's easily one of the best albums of the year - if anyone hasn't checked it out, do so.
On another note, Tha Carter III is a great album. Seems to be a trend around here (and in music in general) to stop liking an artist after they get popular...Weezy is easily the best rapper in the game right now. Go on Wikipedia and look at the number of songs he's been featured in - and he destroys it on every one.
Tha Carter III is no exception. 3peat, Mr. Carter, Shoot Me Down, Playin' With Fire - all awesome songs...and guess what, he's doing a re-release, but with all different songs. Tha Carter III: The Rebirth...so if you didn't like it the first time around, try v 2.0. But don't hate cause he's great.

Fallow is probably their weakest, but as you can tell, "sounds familiar" is probably my favorite song ever. Samson is a poet with a guitar behind him. And this is coming from an MFA student. The production is lacking, sure, but you can admire the talent with ease.

I really don't like it when people use the "You just don't like them because they are popular argument". Lil Wayne has been popular since he was in the Hot Boys, He has released alot of good albums before The Carter III. This release wasn't that good at all, half the songs had a horrible overuse of the vocoder.
And who cares if he is featured in a a lot of songs, when did that justify if that means they are a good rapper. Hell T-Pain is featured in a lot of songs and I think he is straight up crap. I have listened to that album a couple times and its very blah. More people have released better hip hop albums then he has.

It also hasn't even sold 1/4 as much as Fever did, so how it could be considered "over-respected" is beyond me.
With that said, it's one of the most fun albums to listen to in years. It's catchy as hell, has great harmonies, alot of variety, and it's memorable... all things I look for in an album, which is why it's my personal album of the year. I still don't believe they "stole" anything from The Beatles. They were influenced, yes, but theres also alot of other influences on the album if you really listen to it.

Sure they "matured" and improved. But they still are bad. The songs are really hollow feeling.

It's catchy, i'll give you that. The bolded i disagree with. Pretty.Odd is so forgettable. Some songs are backed with emotion, but emotion is temporal and fleeting. The songs really don't have a lot of substance to them, just catchy riffs, melodies, and some choruses.
Clearly upon listening to Pretty.Odd they just dug up Beatles records and wrote songs in that vien. Listen to songs like Pas De Chavel, Behind the Sea, When the Day Met the Night, She Had the World and then listen to any later Beatles' albums. Nothing too similiar at all? It goes beyond influence. The huge jump in sound testifies to that. Otherwise the first album would have had clear influence traits in it. As far as i know, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, does not show any Beatles' influence. So i guess that they "suddenly were influenced by the Beatles for this new sound". Right? Wrong. They had a huge success on their debut, but that wouldn't stand a test of time, and what better way to be immortalized than to copy sounds of artists who are immortalized? And who better than the Beatles? Everyone likes the Beatles, or at least can respect what they did.
And hell... a "pop-punk'ed version of the Beatles" sounds pretty nice compared to all the other generic bullcrap being pumped out by the scene today...

He didn't just start getting popular. That happened with the original "The Carter"... he just happened to fall off now. If you seriously think weezy is the best rapper in the game right now then basically no way I will ever agree with you regardless, though.
No, but he did just become the mainstream superstar he is today over the past year. And if you really wanna talk about it, it all started with Hot Boys when he was only 15 - but that's besides the point.
Listen to any of his mixtapes - Da Drought III, Dedication 2 - he's definitely the best rapper in the game.
I think that there's a lot of people up there who could be considered - lupe, kanye, jeezy, nas - but it's hard to dispute Wayne. NO ONE is doing what he's doing right now.

Lil Wayne's Da Carter III is so incredibly overrated. It's not that good of a hip-hop album at all. Sure the guy is popular, and can crank out songs incredibly fast, but he's nothing super special. I haven't heard his earlier releases, so my comments do not count for those. But recently, he's just what's hot right now in the mainstream.

I have both dedications, all of his work with Hot Boys, all three droughts, the fixes, the leaks, and the squad up mixtapes. I think I know what I'm saying. He was FAR from as popular as he is today back when he was in the hot boys, and none of his earlier albums generated as much buzz as the MIXTAPES he's putting out now.. oh, and I forgot to mention, his first three albums were trash just like the hot boys and he wasn't worth listening to until he changed his flow up..

First of all if you want to talk about who has the best lyrics, then that would be Lupe, Andre 3000, Common, and I will also throw the game in that list even though he still name drops a shit ton.
Jeezy was just bad, he is marketable on the radio and in pop music but most of his lyrics and style is just lame.
KRS-One is solid and keeps pumping out solid releases. EPMD hopefully will have a solid cd, Joe Budden is a good artist, Ice Cube is still a classic in the game.
All the members of Wu-Tang are in a league above Lil Wayne.
So saying Lil Wayne is the greastest rapper in the game is not a true statement, Most of his songs were pretty generic and nothing special off of the Carter III.

Uhh, what "unspoken level of respect" are you talking about?...
90% of people who hear "Pretty.Odd" are idiots and end up saying "OMGOSH THIS SUCKS! FEVER IZ LYKE SOO MUCH BETTUR! WHERE IS ALL TEH DANCE SAWNGZ?!?!1"... and a bunch of people in this thread lol'ed at me when I said it was my personal album of the year (including some people who list bands like All Time Low, Mayday Parade and We The Kings in their favorite artists... a little ironic if you ask me).
They were influenced, yes, but theres also alot of other influences on the album if you really listen to it.

i meant, in a much more light hearted manner than you have taken, that the band wanted to stop being regarded as such a novelty write off band, which they somehow achieved to some extent by stealing from the beatles. never did i say they were held in high critical esteem or anything of the sort
& if you enjoy the band/album... sweet as, doesn't worry me one bit fella, each to their own. i just noticed a change in many peoples attitudes between their albums & pointed it out

Valencia - We All Need A Reason To Believe

Cut Copy got some attention when it came out, not sure why people ignore it now. I am one of those people, but only because I am lazy and never listened to it haha. Most kids on here are too distracted by poppy summer releases or other scene garbage.

It's one thing that all the kids on here listen to all those at some point this year, but to love them ALL is a whole different thing, blows my mind.
It's either that they a) have low standards or b) don't know what music outside of scene even sounds like or c) have bad taste in music
