Fuck yea dude the Meters are awesome.
This past summer I got to see George Porter and he ruled. I really want to see the Meters though, now being called, The Funky Meters. Heard that shit is tits. They are playing with the guitarist of Soulive too which is also an awesome band.

Yes! Someone replied to this!
I would kill to be able to see them play. They've influenced me a great deal and it would be so cool to see them.
I've never heard of Soulive - I'll check 'em out.

Ya Soulive is cool. They have some of the hippest tunes around. Its Jazz based but still has a hip-hop feel kind of like Medeski Martin and Wood if youve ever listened to them and a little bit of that funk feel.

I looked Soulive up and they definatly seem like something I'd be into. What album do you think I should start with?

love the meters! part of that legendary new orleans funk & soul culture of old, those must have been the times. favourite album is look-ka py py followed by rejuvenation. but their self titled, struttin', fire on bayou & cabbage alley are all so awesome
i would have loved it had the meters done just one album with wilson pickett on vocals... just imagine all the potential that collaboration had

I thought I might see you in here, Craig. I remember you saying you liked The Meters.
I don't have individual albums, just a burnt copy of their anthology that I got from my guitar instructor. So I don't really distinguish between albums very much.

they're awesome. i'm actually about to put their albums onto my new mp3 player... if i can get the bloody thing to stop syncing every other audio file in sight for a couple minutes
it was actually ska music that led me into the meters (& funk really). during the 60's jamaican ska & the new orleans funk/soul sound really started to have an overlap in fans as importing records became much more common. the bands from both parts of the world were also really into each others musical culture & sound, always keeping an eye on the latest records & bands & each taking some form of influence from the other. a lot of respect was paid both ways from both musical cultures too. the meters took an influence from ska/reggae, which can be heard throughout parts of their catalogue, on tunes like "soul island" for example. that impact of ska music mate... everywhere haha

Ha, good luck with getting your player to sync up correctly. Gotta love technology.
I can definatly hear some ska/reggae influence in some of their stuff. It'd probably be easier for me to hear it all if I was more into ska, but right now I'm just taking whatever I can get my hands on.

The Meters are great. Tons of hip-hop artists sample them. I've actually seen them live about 10 times...if you have a chance it's definitely worth it. They really bring it. Actually back in high-school I went with some of my buddies and my dad to see them. We ended up backstage and Art Neville went up to my dad and asked if it was cool if they started smoking. My dad, thinking they meant cigarettes, told them that it was fine and that he smoked himself. Art then broke out some joints...dad immediately made us leave.

Listening to Rejuvenation for the first time. Holy motherfuck, if that's not the tightest funk I've ever heard. So, so good.
Seriously some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard on that record. All 12 minutes of "Ain't No Use" are absolutely unreal.

They were the first funk band I ever listened to and I haven't been able to find a band that's even close to how awesome these guys are. More people need to listen to this band, seriously.

You can hear so much of what Prince, and therefore guys like the Neptunes, did later listening to them.

Listening to Look-Ka Py Py. Phenomenal stuff. Anyone know what artists they were the house band for? I'd love to hear them backing a vocalist.

After spending a few months playing under the Sounds name, producer Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn hired the group -- without the vocalists -- to be the house band for their label Sansu Enterprises.
As the house band for Sansu, the Meters played on records by Earl King, Lee Dorsey, Chris Kenner, and Betty Harris, as well as Toussaint himself

I feel like every time I bump a thread, you take it as an opportunity to say "hey, I'm really cool."

Haha, I think most of my friends would call my listening to old funk, country, etc the opposite of cool. But I'm glad someone else thinks it's cool.

Haha, apparently so. None of them wanted to see Charles Bradley tonight so I'm bringing my mom, that should've been the first sign.

I was thinking about going to that, too, but my Nana dying kinda re-shuffled my show-going plans.

I'm really sorry. And that's totally understandable. I'm psyched he's playing my town since we never get any good shows.
But yeah, the Meters are great. Look-Ka Py Py is so awesome.
