View Full Version : small drum kit help
I am in the market for a small sized kit, one that is more portable but for a smaller show setting like floor shows/house shows. etc etc. I am looking for a 4 piece, not a fan of toms that sit high (more so flat.
Anyone help on any kits I should check out.
I know Shine and Truth make a lot of their kits like this, but are very over priced + shitty bands use them.
Hey ho, lets go. Thanks for the help.

The catalina club sets from Gretsch are really solid. The toms have a mounting system and you can adjust it to however low you want. They all seem to be between 500 and 800. You can find some pictures of them here http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gretsch-Drums,Acoustic-Drum-Sets-Acoustic-Drums---Sets.gc
I have the black set with the red stripes and it has really worked well for me.

I second the catalina sets, though I prefer the jazz model over the standard set. The smaller bass drum, I feel like, is way tighter. Can't go wrong with either though!

agreed on that kit, unless you can find some sort of deal on craigslist or ebay or something
so that's the kit to want in terms of small?

The Tama Imperial Star is a decent compact kit as well, it's a 5 piece but you obviously could just take a tom off of it.

Well, how much are trying to spend ?
If you want, you could buy the parts and put together a great kit yourself. That's what I did with my new snare, and it turned out incredible:

ddrum makes some "pocket" maple kits, that sound pretty good, and probably have around the sizes you are looking for

I have the Gretsch Catalina Club set with Red Stripes/Black Finish. I love it! It took a while to get used to but it's amazing now! The first thing you will notice is that you WILL get better at drums playing this kit because it's way harder to play if your coming from a beginner kit, GREAT intermediate kit! Mine was $400 on sale at GC. What's the spec differences between the normal and jazz one?
