Anyone know of any or attend any that have strong English and Arts programs, preferably with a great journalism program? Because I'm looking, and this is driving me crazy.

I'm looking generally in the Chicagoland area, but elsewhere in Illinois or Wisconsin is good too. Just visited UW Madison today.

The only college I can think of in the Chicagoland area is Loyola University.

University of Chicago has always had a phenomenal English program. However, it is one of the toughest schools to get into in the country.

If you're looking at an undergrad Journalism major, look no further than the University of Missouri. Best in the country, for sure.

I would, but I'm not looking to go that far from Rockford.

University of Chicago? I don't think I've ever even heard of it before. Do you know their requirements or anything?

Don't deprive yourself of a good education because you're too afraid to leave the nest. You'll find yourself hardly ever going home in a few years anyway.

I think Carthage is pretty decent. There's also always U of I, seeing as they've got the money to be good at pretty much everything. My school (Bradley) is solid as well.

I'd agree with the person above me, though - distance can definitely be a factor, but don't go into a search saying there's no way you'll go out of a certain state. Another four hours tacked on the end of a drive is worth getting the right college fit.

I'm going to Northern Michigan University for art. It's an awesome program, especially for the price. I don't know a whole lot about the english program, but from what I've seen it's pretty good. And like I said, the price is great for this school and it is extremely easy to get into. It's not quite Chicagoland, but still remotely nearby.

Im surprised you haven't heard of it...its probably one of the best schools in the country. Last fall they only let in 34.7% of applicants. US News ranks it 8th for the Best National Colleges of 2009. They put it ahead of Dartmouth, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, and Brown. Maybe youll have good luck since you're in-state. Good luck!

That's true. It's just always been my dream to live in Chicago and go to college. Or at least in the area, somewhere close, so I could visit it whenever I wanted. But you're right, I shouldn't be wary of out-of-state colleges. I'm also thinking about out of state tuition, though. Most UW colleges and UI colleges are cool with reciprocal programs.

Where is Carthage? Or Bradley?

Carthage is in Kenosha (mid-point between Chicago and Milwaukee, roughly), and Bradley is in Peoria (about 3 hours south of Chicago).

Honestly, don't go to Carthage. It's a pretty poor school, and the last grad i met was an assistant manager at Sharper Image (and she did well in school). Northwestern and Chicago are obviously fantastic places to go, as are Marquette (milwaukee) for journalism, as well as Loyola (chicago) for whatever. If you wanna be a broadcast journalist, go to Syracuse, possibly Missouri, or other schools i mentioned, they're great at that. Anyway, don't waste your time with a piss poor school i mentioned, and good luck.

When people say "Chicagoland" it makes me think of it as a section of Disneyland.
