Check the replies for my SXSW Day 1: Night Shows Report. Last night was a night of packed houses and sold out shows. These are the bands I tried to check out last night:Billy Idol (http://www.billyidol.com), Murder By Death (http://www.murderbydeath.com) and FireKills (http://www.firekills.net).

Okay, so here we are half way through the first day of sxsw and its already super packed and crazy. I've got two words for you to discribe the madness surrounding wed nights sxsw events: Billy Idol. and now here are two more words for NO ENTRY. thats right, it seemed like no one got in to see Billy Idol on wed night (if you did your much more lucky than i was) the line for those with sxsw badges ($500 passes to sxsw, also get first dibbs on entry to shows) wrapped around one side of the block that the venue is located on, while another equally as long line wrapped around the other side of the building for those of us who had sxsw wristbands (the $150 passes to sxsw) needless to say if you didn't have a badge you weren't getting in. However we did park our car right behind the venue (stage facing us, its an outside stage fyi) so we got to hear several great songs including White Wedding, Eyes Without A Face, and his new single Scream.
Speaking of not being able to get into packed shows, I also tried to catch Gratitude and Murder By Death at Sake on 6th, but that venue also had a "wrap around" line and the door guy was requesting that everyone go home because he wasn't letting anyone else inside.
I also caught Austin's own, Firekills (www.firekills.net)playing there major label rep packed showcase at the Redrum. These guys have a sound that mixes pop with screamy emo, and they're great at what they do so check them out if you like that sort of thing.

I would have loved to have seen them last night. apparently the venue they played is a pretty small place, hence the quick sell out. every year at sxsw there are so many bars that quickly turn into live music venues to get in on this sxsw action. so I had never been to sake and didn't know it would sell out so fast. so I'm sorry if I offended you by mentioning their name and then not actually getting in to the show. last night was full of "not getting in to the show" hopefully tonight will be better.
I'm about to go watch The Start play a free show at the Flamingo Cantina we/ Cruiserweight.

wait, you're the AP SXSW correspondent and you didn't bother purchasing passes?
there's no point, you won't get into virtually any shows. they are all practically reserved for people that have badges. even at that, you'll have a hard time getting in.

Glad to hear that you'll be sponsoring the 450 dollar music pass next year.
Also, I've gone the past 3 years and I've had no problems getting into anything I've wanted to. If you plan on seeing a huge group at SXSW, youll have problems. If you're into bands small/considerate enough to play free shows, you'll be happy.

i agree, the day shows with smaller bands are the place to be. last year Bleeding Through played a great day show at Emos (one of the best shows i've seen in awhile)
and yes, i'm the absolute punk sxsw correspondent and yes i have no super expensive badge. sorry but i'm just a volunteer doing reports about what i'm checking out.

That sucks you couldn't get into MBD. I've seen them six or seven times, I forget exactly how many, but last time I saw them was when they still had Brandon. I really want to hear how they sound with Sarah switching between cello and keyboard. Like, actually hear it myself, not just have someone tell me "Oh my god, they still sound so amazing!" Because some people seem to think that that's equal to being there.

My question is why were you trying to get into Murder By Death when they're playing for free at Emos on Saturday afternoon?
The best anything to happen at SXSW was strhessfest 2 years ago. ETID/Scarlet/Blood has been shed/unearth and a ton more. That was absolutely amazing.
Isis playing for free on Saturday will probably eclipse it though.

Come on give the guy a break. It must suck not being able to get into these great shows. I wish I was there but if I was there and couldnt get in now that would suck.
