View Full Version : I just realized the absence of classic rock in my library

Every single one of my songs is post 90's, but last week I dug up a Bob Dylan cd re-newing my interests. Probably beaten to a pole, but what are some legit classic rock albums?

Anything from Zeppelin pretty much.
The Black Sabbath albums with Ozzy and Dio as the lead singers.
I also love Taken by Force by Scorpions.

Yeah, he may be but his band is one of the best and most popular bands of all time. So you at least have to give him credit for that. I'm pissed he's not doing the Zep reunion too.

Since there was a distinct absence of rock in his music?
Right. There are clearly no traces of rock in Highway 61 Revisited, or Blonde on Blonde, or the rock-oriented side of Bringing it All Back Home, etc.

Also, I'm sure you've heard of most of the classic rock worth hearing. If you just mean pre-90s, then here are some bands/artists to consider;
Beatles
Beach Boys
Pink Floyd
Bruce Springsteen
Sonic Youth
The Velvet Underground
Hendrix
Simon & Garfunkel
The Smiths
Elton John
Led Zep
David Bowie
Bob Dylan lol
Paul Simon
I tried to keep it in the guitar-driven esque genres.

Led Zep and Hendrix is the only classic rock on that list.
The Who have some awesome songs too.
I understand. That's why I said "If you mean pre-90s...". Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Classic rock is just a type of radio station not a type of music.
My favorite pre 90's music is Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Tom Waits. They all have pretty big discographies so you should be able to find something appealing from them.
If you want songs you hear on a classic rock radio station then:
Led Zeppelin - IV
the Who - Who's Next
Pink Floyd - the Wall
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced
AC/DC - Back in Black
Download/buy these five albums and you will have half of all music played on classic rock radio.

I'm don't really know my way around "classic rock" but I have found a few I really like so far:
Zepp - I, II, III, IV
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deep Purple - Machine Head
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King, Red
Yes - Fragile, Close to the Edge

Thanks for posting The Kinks! That particular album is even more "folky" than most Dylan, though - unless you get the 3-Disc expanded version. ;-) A better one might be the 1st album "Kinks" - but get the UK Castle import with a butt-load of bonus tracks. Most Americans think of "You Really Got Me" as the 1st album, but it's the same thing, sans about 3 songs:

Also, the Brit Pop template for all time has got to be Face to Face:
http://991.com/newGallery/The-Kinks-Face-To-Face---Mi-542501.jpg
Finally, this one has a bit of an 80's rock edge, and a song that was an early MTV favorite:

Bob Dylan is classic rock? I'm not sure what you want me to recommend...
Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Velvet Underground, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, and Black Sabbath.
Discographies for all of them.
And even though they aren't classified as Classic Rock - The Clash. Get the fucking Clash.

The Kinks are absolutely essential.
Also, for what might very well be the first legitimate punk rock band, you need to check out The Sonics.

Yeah I know. The station here plays Dylan, Clash, even stuff like Johnny Cash and Simon and Garfunkel.
