View Full Version : Who was/is bigger, Hansbrough or Redick?

I hated Redick with a passion, and love UNC bball, but one cannot deny Redick's collegiate greatness. With Hansbrough passing JJ in 602 points, who do you think who has been a bigger college icon?

One of my favorite memories is freshman Psycho T beating Duke at Cameron on JJ and sheldon's senior night.

I mean, in the end, Durant was more impressive than both in his singular season, and will matter in the NBA, so this point is fairly moot. I think the answer is Reddick if you want one, but I don't think it matters in the end, because just like winning the Heisman and sucking in the NFL, being great and college and failing in the NBA minimizes your college career

I didn't ask for the greatest single season, I asked for the greatest career. The fact that both these players may enjoy their greatest glory at the college level is irrelevant. In no way was I asking for a ten-year look ahead. I was simply asking how these two players college will be looked upon in 15 years.

Allow me to rephrase that then
If you are great and college and great in the NBA...your college career develops this sort of aura to it (Carmelo, Durant, Jordan, Hakeem, the list goes on)...and people talk about your college career as 10x better than it really was. I think perhaps only Durant on that list will actually live up to the hype of his NCAA career.
But, when you are a JJ or an Adam Morrison...you live in the history...but when people see you in the NBA, they are forced to think "what happened" and then, eventually "remember when..."
So I guess it doesn't diminish their college career technically, but it makes them much more forgettable. In the games I watches this last year, you would hear more about Durant and Melo than about JJ or Morrison by a 10:1 ratio at least. Part of it is the one-and-done phenomenon, but the other part is that there is no way to say "at least they translated it to the next level"

If UNC wins this year, it will probably be Hansborough because it would mean he has 2 POTY trophies and a championship which would trump JJ's hardware. If not, I would still say JJ, but I don't have an in depth argument at the moment
I think JJ had the statistically craziest season I've seen in the ACC. He had the 15th highest percentage of shots in the nation, yet was in the top 50 in the nation in efficiency, especially for a guard that doesn't drive as much, that is nuts. Add in that he had very few turnovers and you get a very impressive season (06). And then in 05 and 04 he had seasons that weren't as impressive, but were on par with that sort of style.
Let me put it this way, JJ Reddick, a jump shooter who took an inordinate amount of threes, had in one season, a more effective shooting season than Tyler Hansborough, a guy who doesn't like jumpers and has a lot of layups/dunks

Well, it would be hard for me to imagine a scenario where UNC wins the championship and Hansborough doesn't win POTY and Tourney MVP...though there could be a scenario where they don't win and he still wins POTY. The thing is, UNC is pretty clearly the favorite this season, so much as JJ's inability to win it was made note of, I think the same would hold for Hansborough. If Hansborough improves on his #'s from last year, he might trump JJ in my mind, but he's got some work to do
Edit: It'd be way easier to answer after this season...because Hansborough could get hurt, he could have a weak season, or he could do something crazy and put up 25/10.

You're right, If UNC doesn't win this year, Hansbrough's career would have permanent "but's" to answer to. I hope we win, but kwhat a disaster it would be if we didn't....

As big of a UNC fan as I am, I have to say J.J. He was one of those polarizing characters, I think even more so than Hansbrough. I think J.J actually reveled in being hated that much, while Hansbrough just plays. I do think this could change though, depending how large of a season Hansbrough has. He's definitely a system guy...on a team that slows the ball down and relies on defense, he isn't the guy, but put him on the old Suns and I bet he'd get some decent PT, because he can still shoot. When the Magic played him more the first season, he shot fairly well from 3 (38%), and averaged 6pts a game in 14mins. Get him on a team that needs an outside shooter, and he could play 20mins, get you 8-10pts and shoot fairly well.
He's not an All-Star, duh, but he could be a better role player than he is being allowed to be

I'd argue in this thread but I know Preppy *** has me blocked and gay Jason Tate will ban me again.

JJ has to get the edge, ONLY because he set scoring/3pt records in his career.
HOWEVER
I have MUCH, MUCH respect for hansrbough. He's a great player, and if he gets votes over JJ I can't REALLY argue against them. He's a great player who plays with a lot of passion. Go him.
With that said.
Preppy, I know you can't read this but to say a pro career negates a college career is just fucking stupid. He's asking about a college question, not a pro question. That's like bringing up last years stats to prove that THIS years team is better a shooting team, yes YOU I"m talking to Jason Tate.

I really like this statement. I can't believe you blocked me because I don't agree iwth your statement htat Kevin Durant is a true forward.
In your own theory, KD's collegiate forward career is negated by his pro, SG 'tweener' career.
Which is stupid, of course because KD wasn't a 'true' forward, even college. However, I'm not saying KD isn't a forward, I'm only arguing your point that he is a true forward.

What do you define as "well"?
I think he's shooting 41% from the field and 38% from the behind the arc for his career. I'd say that's "well" - I'd take it from a backup shooting guard. I don't want him on my team right now -- but I can think of a few NBA teams that wouldn't mind that kind of production for 10-15 minutes a game.

Yeah, but that's not that good when you're considering that his 3pt shooting is basically the only positive a team will look for him in the NBA. He plays below average defense, and there's a reason he's not getting very many minutes. I just don't see him ever having any type of solid impact on an NBA team. I just don't see him ever having any type of solid impact on an NBA team. At least not nearly to the effect that some people saw him having when drafted.
That's a valid point...when he got drafted he was expected to be a good 6th man/maybe 3rd or 4th scorer for a team...he could pass and shoot, but his defense lacked. Then he only played 40 games his first season, and has gotten less run from there, so from an outside perspective of any other team, they kind of have to assume its because he can't make it in the NBA.
Had he been drafted by the Suns or a team that would let him get on the court and just be an outlet shooter...he'd probably still be getting 15mins a game with some team, and then eventually would probably find himself out of the league down the road, but, he never really got a start.

Roughly the same from behind the arc as Harrington, Kidd, and Stojakovic at the moment. I didn't imply it was great -- I just think it's "well" for a bench player. Higher than quite a few "stars" -- although someone like Iverson or Bryant is not looked at as a pure 3pt threat like I suppose Redick would be. I think he could be a solid 10 ppg shooter on a different team. That said - I wouldn't trade for him for my team.

I agree with that. I have read some of his comments on his blog - and he still really wants to play. I think he got a few minutes tonight - had a few points. Had 10 in 18 the other night I believe. But Orlando did just give him another 5 million or something on his option ... so maybe they're looking for trade bait or something. No idea. He was the first off the bench this year to start the season -- then he fucking sucked in the first 3 games. Gundy said it right when he said he was trying too hard -- and playing like he had everything to lose, when in the preseason (where he played really well) he played like he had nothing to lose.
That said - Sheldon Williams was a bigger flop. Morrison hasn't been doing so hot lately either. That draft class has been weird.

the greatest three point shooters in the league normally have lower averages than guys like Jason Kapono who can't do anything but shoot threes. Ray Allen is the best pure long ball shooter in the league and he's typically not among the leaders because he's asked to take so many more.

kidd has never been regarded as a good 3 point shooter and neither has al harrington really
I know. Was just tossing comparisons out there. Seems to be a middle of the road average. It's in the top 60 in the league from my quick math. Not great - but decent.

Good point.
I was looking at some stats on ESPN that uses the adjusted avg:
ADJFG% measures shooting efficiency by taking into account the total points a player produces through his field goal attempts. The intention of this adjustment is largely to evaluate the impact of three-point shooting. For ex: If Shaquille O'Neal has 3-5 FG, all two-point shots for 6 points, then his ADJ FG% = [(6/5)]/2 = .600. Meanwhile, if Ray Allen is 2-5 FG, but his 2 FGM are both three-pointers for 6 points, then his ADJ FG% = [(6/5)]/2 = .600

Redick does not bring anything relatively close to what Harrington, Kidd, or Stojakovic brings to the NBA, though you already know that. Peja has hit consistently over 40% from beyond the arc for his career, and I'm not sure why you're bringing up Kidd or Harrington, because they've never been that good of a 3 pt shooter outside of an increased percentage with Harrington the past couple years. Redick is going to have to consistently shoot over 40% for 3 pointers for a team to be comfortable at giving him increased minutes in a backup position to make up for his lack of defense. He hasn't shown the ability to do that yet. I just don't think he will ever be able to put up an average of 10 ppg as a backup on any team. I might be proven wrong, but I just don't see it.

I know - my point was that he's middle of the road. Not horrible, not great, just average. Why that is may be up for debate - but the numbers imply he isn't anything special. I think he is averaging like 5 pts in 11 minutes for his career. I was just assuming (nothing to back it up) that he could probably - given a marginal increase in minutes (and therefore play into his strength and streaks) - hit the 10 ppg mark for a variety of other teams. I just don't think that team is Orlando from my thoughts on how they play.
At one point I saw JJ maybe being a player like Rudy Fernandez has been for the Blazers this year. That kind of shooter off of screens and such. Not anymore. Just not going to happen - and he's not good enough or athletic enough to do it. What worked in college when he was the center of the offense - doesn't work in the NBA. I still think a shooter is always needed somewhere in the NBA. And a streaky shooter is sometimes worth taking a chance on. As long as it's not my team taking the chance .. heh.
It amazes me that Orlando is paying Redick like this and Salim Stoudamire is currently out of work.

He's not playing for Atlanta?
No, he was actually in San Antonio last, but they waived him.

Hmm. I thought I remembered pre-season #'s for him with ATL. Interesting. He always seemed undersized to me ... he's from Portland though, so I cheered for him.
Yessir, same HS as Love, I believe. My dad's from up there and he never stops talking about that stuff. He's not a true point guard, and doesn't have the size for the 2, but any guy that can shoot like has to be worthy of a roster spot, IMO.

Don't worry Zebulon Currier (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=197600892) is still trying to facebook me:
Lol, I'm glad you posted what I did. Thanks for not using my name, I guess you're not completely 10 years old.
Anyways, I'm not angry, honestly, it's actually me and like 5 of my buddies laughing at how you think you're so cool......to go post it on your 'site'. You only proved my point further, as to how you're a bitch.
And we would honestly, love for you to come here. Again, not to fight, only to actually talk to the MR TATE, the man of many bans, just see how 'cool' you are. Where you can't run to your comp, ban someone, or where you have to respond.
I'm waiting for a response. You have yet to deliver on the past 3-4 times. I guess, it could be because all your points are.....how we say, wrong?
Apparently me not responding makes him angry.

Exactly. He has always been a perfect example of a game that would not translate into the NBA.

i dont think it matter's which of the two are better since jj is pretty much an obscure bench player on the magic and unless hansbrough develops a better midrange game atleast, he's destined for the same thing because he just overpowers everyone in the college game.

From Draft Express...the up/downsides to Hansborough...I highlighted my favorites
Strengths:
• Best player in college basketball?
• Productivity
• Strength
• Toughness
• Motor
• Competitor
• Winner
• Back to the basket scoring
• Footwork
• Jump-hook
• Getting to free throw line
• Free throw shooting
• Defensive intensity
• Intangibles
Weaknesses:
• Size
• Length
• Explosiveness
• Ball-handling skills
• Lateral quickness
• Defensive potential
• Passing out of post
• Man amongst boys?
• Year older than class
• Upside
I like that "best player in college b-ball" is a questionable positive...but I mostly like that all his weaknesses are the first things an NBA scout would likely look for (size, quickness/defense, explosiveness, upside)...and that his strengths are things that people give to athletes when they have no direct good things to say (Intangibles, Competitor/Winner)

I'll disagree with those two...and easily. Bigger Icon? I've yet to see Tyler Hansborough be THE SOLE story for an entire season like Reddick/Morrison was...I'd argue both were bigger icons than hansborough is now, especially because Tyler got trumped by Durant/Beasley/etc in some years. But I'll throw this in there for fun:
http://www.staticmultimedia.com/images/j_1.j._redick_on_college_hoops_2k7_ reddick5.jpg
And, perhaps at the end of this year we can proclaim Hansborough the better college player...but, until he gets those extra 400 points to surpass JJ, no dice on better college player...because we can still use statistics to gauge college players against each other.

Both were/are pretty much the centerpieces (Hansbrough moreso than JJ) of not only a top ACC team, but one of the best teams in the country?
