WASHINGTON — A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

Gotta love it

What puzzles me is it seems the same people who think that his associations with REVEREND Wright mean that he's going to enslave all the whites also seem to think he's a Muslim. does. not. compute.

i think the whole "i believe he's a muslim" is just code for "i'm racist but i don't want to come right out and say it so i'll use some other sort of idiocy to explain my views".

Oh, I think they're clearly wearing their racism on their sleeves by saying they're not voting for him because they think he's Muslim.

yeah, pretty much......but to be fair the poll doesn't really clarify if the people who believe he's muslim are going to base who they vote for on this inaccurate belief.

Well since I have yet to see or hear anyone who is pro-Obama explain that they think he's a Muslim I'd have to argue that most of those people will base their vote on something as trivial as the candidates religion.

i agree that it is/will be a reason given....i just don't buy that it's the real reason for most of these people.

You can stop talking now please. I'm sure Texas will go to Mccain; there are bound to be racists; but I know a lot of people now who voted for bush who now vote for obama. not everybody in Texas is ignorant.

I myself would have never voted for Bush, even if I wasn't eligible. But I just came back from early voting and proudly voted for obama.

I got into an argument with someone about this recently. It didn't matter to the kid that he wasn't a muslim, because he had muslim ties. It is funny because when you think about it, there are probably more Christian terrorists than Islamic ones.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read. The vast majority of my campus, and many Houstonians are voting for Obama, so considering this is the city with the largest population in Texas, your statement is invalid. And what about Austin?

The Inquisition, the Crusades, etc. The early Vatican and the Papal States' armies. Whole faith is based on terror.

Most population centers that aren't Ft. Worth, Dallas (though it's shifting), Galveston, Corpus Christi, and El Paso are going Obama.

As a Texan, I can confirm that a lot of people just flat out hate Obama. My school participated in a nation wide mock election. My school votes were in favor for McCain with 67% (lol). When I raised my hand (with one other person) for saying I voted for Obama in the mock election, I was booed and hissed at. Thankfully, Obama won the mock election on a national scale. Then kids claimed to move to flee to Canada if he took office.

Haha wait, they would want to move to Canada if Obama is elected? A country that's a lot more Liberal compared to the US? That sure makes sense.

A state-wide survey of 550 people?

Texas has a population of more than 23,000,000 people.. that seems to be a rather low sample size.

But anyways, I am not surprised at the result.

More than one school within the state participated. They did it on such a large scale that I believe it's pretty accurate.
