View Full Version : What band really got you into music?

For me it was probably blink.
probably fall out boy and my chemical romance (with a dash of linkin park and system of a down)
Broden Terry

Bon Jovi had the biggest impact on me getting into music.

My Chemical Romance definitely got me into trying different types of music...I used to listen to nothing but pop music...they were my gateway drug haha

Either Meat Loaf or Def Leppard, as I found them almost at the same time and I instantly wanted more from them and other artists like them.

Evanescence, definitely.

I'm not sure I understand the question this thread poses, I mean I dont think music is something you 'get into' its kind of something that's always just been there, or for me it has anyway.
So I'm just going to answer what my first cassette tapes (a christmas gift) were Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson and I think my first cd which was a gift as well was Hootie and the Blowfish.
The first music I probably listened to in general was either on my moms side Earth Wind and Fire and the Temptations and stuff like that or on my dads side classic rock, Kiss, ACDC, Free, Beatles, Stones, BTO, Seger, BOC, Van Halen, Bosten etc..
Again no one band, for me anyway got me into music.

^ Well, I think it's about what band make you start to relate to music and take it seriously.
I mean, I grew up singing along to Britney Spears and *NSYNC with the rest of the tween crowd, but their music didn't really mean anything to me.
I didn't understand how powerful music can be until years later, when I heard Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life."

fall out boy. they're still one of my favorites. most bands I like now I like to some degree because of fall out boy or another band I got into because of fall out boy. I even started using ap because of a band I got into because of fall out boy.
but then I got into a rut and cobra starship was the band that got me out of it and made me love music again. they've been my favorite ever since.

The first proper band that I really got into was Oasis. The bands that got me listening to the music I do now would be The Offspring, blink-182, and NOFX.
DilesMavis
10/31/08, 03:35 AM
The Smashing Pumpkins, old Underoath, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, and The Eagles. A lot of Trance and Techno too.

this is hard to answer. because I went through a wave where I listened to nothing but complete shit, and really never had any impact on my later tastes, except for evanescence. so I guess I'll go with them.
I had no interest at all in music until I was 16. First heard hardcore punk bands at that point. First I can recall liking were the Fullblast. Other than that was actually Metallica. I seem to have moved far away from my roots...

Ah boy. System of a Down and Disturbed haha. A couple of years later I listened to At The Drive-In and they were my foot into what I listen to now.

Linkin Park were the ones that really got me into listening to music, and Green Day and Blink got me into punk.

Probably comeback kid or alexisonfire. Those two led to me to a whole slew of music.
Circa Survive taught me to dig in. The bands I found through them, along with them, are still my favorites to this day.
Yellowcard.
I joined their forum, met cool people who introduced me to different things, one of them introduced me to ap.net, eventually found the Music Forum and Ben and Vinh and post-rock. All thanks to Yellowcard. Ha.

Exactly. It's a crazy world we live in.
And it's really all because of Madden 2004, because it had "Way Away" in it, so I went out and bought Ocean Avenue.

That's a pretty awesome story. I'm embarrassed of the band that led me to post-rock. Shameful.

Thrice, Thursday, and Poison the Well all got me into music more. Mostly Thrice, cause I started playing guitar around the time Illusion of Safety came out, and that cd was fun as hell to play back then.

blink-182 is what got me into rock related music but the band that made me realize i was one of those music kids was brand new

10/31/08, 04:18 PM
relient k, and brand new. both bands got me into listening to an artist's full catalog rather than only the singles. my tastes expanded from there.
but way back in the day when I was 6-7, I used to watch VH1 weekly video countdown religiously. I remember for my 8th birthday I got a boombox and Savage Garden's "Ooh I Want You" single. Me and my friends were so excited and started dancing with that song at full blast on repeat. And then "MMMBop" came out.

When i was like 8 i started listening to Backstreet Boys. *puke* But I loved music even then and was inspired to play keyboard... As i got slightly older i started listening to country and pop crap...
The first band that got me into experimental music and heavier rock was Coheed and Cambria. i still love them and they are one of my favorite bands.
Slipknot got me into metal.. blehhhhh hahahhh
Who's Chris?

Johnny Cash. Been listening since I can remember. What got me into studying the music and the "scene" and joining this website were bands like Brand New, All Time Low, and Neutral Milk Hotel.
In fact I think I found AP.net by searching for a rumour I heard about Vinnie from Brand New dying. Then I lurked for a year, and finally joined.

Ridiculous, haha. That Madden soundtrack introduced me to Thrice who more recently have got me into a different type of music.
Oasis were the first band I really loved. Linkin Park were the heavy band at 11 who I first clicked with.

Back in middle school, I listened to Creed, Limp Bizkit, Puddle of Mudd, and a bunch of other shitty mainstream bands, simply because that's what all my friends were listening to.
After I heard Blink 182 for the first time, all of that changed. They were the band that got me into punk rock (and really music, in general). If it wasn't for that band, I probably would've never started playing guitar, either. So, I owe a lot to them and their music.

blink-182 + Green Day. theyre my most influential bands. they led me to pop-punk and catchy melodies with simple guitar riffs. this is the only type of music i can create now LOL
all-american rejects led me to pop lyrics with super catchy melodies & very simple guitar riffs.
pennywise led me to melodic hardcore, which didnt add up in my mind, and i cant listen to it anymore. its just too much chaotic for my bright personality :)
motion city soundtrack led me to the more synthesized type music, like the killers. hot fuss is brilliant. :)
third eye blind and jack's mannequin influenced me towards softer music. piano music, acoustic music, john mayer, blahblahblah...
right now i'm just in looove with jack's mannequin. haha. piano & drums, guitar and bass has never gotten better for me. :)
for me, anything that isn't remotely catchy just isn't fun. LOL.
