View Full Version : Epitaph is out of Control
Who's Chris?

This is the worst time ever to be in the music industry as a label. I see labels going under constantly (science records went under today), tons of layoffs at indie and major labels, people dont buy cds anymore, etc...
Despite all this, Epitaph is kicking ass. They are definitely THE label to watch blow up (bigger than they already are) this coming year with their signing of NFG, Thursday and their killer lineup of artists.

it's hard to say any label's going to "blow up" in today's industry
ha isnt that true.
you rarely find pop-punk/punk/alt/indie or any other band actually "blow-up", besides FOB...Even look at ATL, to us fans of the industry, it looks like they have blown up like crazy, but compared to the rest on the music industry (can you even call it that anymore?) with all the rappers and "pop artists", All Time Low really isnt that big...
T(science records went under today)
Hey, at least it wasn't Team Science Records... then I would be sad.

Epitaph is sick.
Escape The Fate, Thursday, Story of the Year, and a shitload of other great ones. OMG. I like ISMFOF though. I think it was good of Epitaph to sign them. Theyre crazy and have quite a unique sound IMO...

Epitaph is gonna go mainstream soon and sign to major record label, put out a pop album, and start doing business in giant bubble.

yeah and then bands like the weakerthans will be dropped and bands like millencolin will leave...

epitaph is already distributed through warner bros. so, they already have gone "mainstream".
and they've already put out plenty of solid "pop" records. look at the offspring. look at the many pop punk bands they've had.
epitaph has sucked for a long time. just look at the punk-o-rama comps. they started getting worse and worse. and now they're not even called punk-o-rama. lammme.

They may be distro'd though a major but i doubt that that WB is doing anything for their bands. They're just distributed product to them. They don't upstream their bands to WB.

mostly 'cause all their bands suck?
yah. that's it.
there is not one good talented band on this label presently. all fucking garbage.

All Epitaph is doing is taking yesterday's "it" bands (in the pop punk community anyway) and giving them places where their remaining fans can get their albums. They're not breaking new ground in any way; they don't deserve any credit.
And as for the new bands they're signing: terrible. They should shut it down and focus on their back cataloge.

I'll admit, Story Of The Year, Thursday and NFG are all pretty good bands, but are already established acts that Epitaph really had to do nothing for the monetary gain they will be getting out of this.
while they got these bands, they lost a bunch of good ones like Pulley and Death By Stereo

epitaph is in a perfect position right now. they have a bunch of smaller bands with singles out (like sing it loud) that will fuel their bigger bands(nfg, thursday).
thats what all the majors do.
from a label standpoint this is a good. from a [smaller] band standpoint this is bad.
