Hmmmmm this is a hard one, but I'm partial to Squirtle. He made it easy to beat the first gym, and Blastoise was the man.

In terms of making the game easy in the beginning, Bulbasaur is the best choice. He is effective against the first two gym leaders. He's the newbie pick, for sure. I don't think you can get any grass Pokemon for a while, but you can get poison/bug (which has a lot of similarities) quite commonly.

If you like diversity and want your team to have a bit of everything, Charmander provides that since you can't get a fire Pokemon for a long time. He's also a beast against the common Pokemon you face in the beginning.

Squirtle is the best choice endgame, because Blastoise is far and away the best of the three ending Pokemon (with Venusaur and Charizard being pretty equal, if I do recall). Though any serious end team can't really include any of the starters, if you did have one it'd have to be Blastoise. Charizard is worthless when Moltres is available, and if you really wanted a grass Pokemon a common Exeggutor is much better than Venusaur (and doesn't have that huge poison problem).

I played this game to death when I was like 11.

You were probably like six or seven?

That's a real testament to how awesome Blue/Red really was.. ages as young (and younger) and ages much, much older enjoyed the game to death. The game design, the monsters, the premise is all incredible. Absolutely one of the top 25 games ever created.

If I could get it on my iPhone, I'd play it every day on the way to work. I have a good hour a day where I sit idly on a train/subway listening to my iPod, I'd like to catch 'em all.

I always thought Charizard was a little, not much, but a little better overall than Venusaur was. But you're totally right on Blastoise being the best. Hands down.

joey.esposto
11/04/08, 09:36 PM
definitely a hard choice but i hard to go with squirtle
i mean brock is a rock type and he's the first gym, so it's so much easier to get past him
and then water against water is pretty darn even
so mistys gym is next so i think it's much better then fire which sucks against water and rock and leaf whciis good against rock and nothing great but pretty even against water
and then after the first two gyms you have all your other pokemon build up as well to become a pokemon master against the 6 other gyms

Protested Hero
11/04/08, 10:07 PM
Squirtle beat the first gym easier, but Charmander pulled through for the rest.

I have to agree with the majority here, Charmander is the best starter in RBY. This is, of course, because Charizard is the best fully evolved of the three, especially in GSC.

Although Charizard had yet to get the special boost, the RBY version still gets Earthquake, Swords Dance, and Body Slam, making him a fairly good mixed sweeper. Fire isn't very valuable in RBY, but then again, neither are grass and water (water being the most useful of the three).

Venusaur also gets good moves, but its Grass/Poison typing hurts it enough to put it below Charizard overall. Leech seed and Sleep Powder are great annoyer moves, and Venusaur can pick up Swords Dance + Body Slam as well, or it can go the grass route and use Growth + Razor Leaf. Meganium in GSC upped the ante on Venusaur, but Venusaur still can have some success in RBY.

Blastoise is on the losing end because he has a weak special attack for a water type and has a poor movepool. He gets Earthquake, which is a small way towards countering electrics since they will use their high speed and special stats to wreak havoc on Blastoise. His good special defense comes into play in later versions, but he can't do much in RBY that Starmie can't do better (except use Earthquake, I guess).

Tristan Needler
11/10/08, 06:41 PM
Bulbasaur was the best, because you could easily destroy the first few gyms until you got a chance to catch some nice pokemon. If you got charmander, you had to fight Brock and Misty with Ratatas, pidgys and weedles.

He was the easiest to start with, and by the time Venesaur got razor leaf, it was all over. I couldn't be defeated.
