View Full Version : Deleting Everything On My iPod

I have lately grown disgusted and bored with all the music on my iPod, so I've decided to delete everything and just start over again. Since I don't......um.......actually spend money on any of my music I won't be wasting purchases.

So basically, I just need recommendations. What would you recommend for someone who has nothing on his iPod to download. I should've posted this in the Recommendations section but that doesn't really give productive results, plus this is much bigger than a simple recc.

It would really depend on what kind of music you listened to before, I guess.

Lately, I've been really enjoying Brand New's album's Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. They deserve the praise.
If you've never heard a White Stripes album, start listening.
Sigur Ros continues to amaze me each time I hear them.
I doubt many people have heard of the band Bedhead, but they continue to be one of my favorites even after their breakup. Check out their album What Fun Life Was.
Even if you don't like rap, you should check out the duo Atmosphere for their unique style.
Girl Talk. Seriously.
Check out the album Cross by Justice. I heard all the hype and finally checked it out and the hype is much deserved.

Start with those, and then I guess get back to me.

Start out with the top 100 on this list. After that it goes a little hit or miss but the top 100 should be staples of any music collection.
Agreed. Definitely a good way to start any collection. I wish someone had simply shown me that when I started listening to music.

don't get me wrong, that list, from memory (i'm still childishly refusing to give their site any hits whatsoever), has some great albums. but it's so popular-rock orientated to be taken seriously as a wider music guide & for some reason features a number of greatest hits, even from artists who have many defining works, like ray charles, sly stone, etc

That is true, but it still has albums by Mayfield, Davis, Coltrane, Brown, and Marley in the top 100. Although I am upset that for Marley they have Legend instead of Exodus. The list is far too Beatles heavy for my liking.

although i'd probably rearrange the order, there's definitely a lot of albums on there that i agree with being in the top 500. yea there's a lot of strange entries. if there's too much beatles for your liking, then that's really saying something mate haha. so many bands/albums listed as essential are albums that just popularized a movement rather than pioneering it, nirvana being rated somewhere rather highly (i mean ridiculously highly & even nirvana fans surely agree to some extent?) is just one bizarre example

but oh well, i suppose we're never happy with lists unless they largely reflect our own views haha

Yeah, I think Highway 61 Revisited should really be number one, but then again, there comes in personal bias haha. Nirvana makes sense that high in some bizarre way to me even though it really shouldn't haha.

The music forum needs more lists again! haha

The five most obvious flaws in the list are

a) Way too many early and mediocre Beatles records
b) Radiohead being so neglected. The Bends above OK Computer???
c) Pink Floyd is really low.
d) Nirvana is at number like 8 or something.
e) Mediocre albums by legendary bands make this list. Like Music by Maddona is not a top 500 of all time album. Say what you like about Pitchfork but they have no qualms about trashing bad releases by good bands/artists.
Agreed on all five points despite not really being a big Pink Floyd fan.

I think OK Computer and Kid A are both top 50 all time.

I can throw up a list when im off work, any specific genres?

micahistheballs
11/02/08, 07:38 PM
OK Computer is easilly the top nineties albums and Kid A easilly the top 00's album so they both deserve a significant place on the list and top 50 seems fair cause well most of the best music is from the 60's and 70's.
Do you see those records moving up as time goes on and their impact becomes even more apparent?

micahistheballs

Rolling Stone has minimal appreciation for anything after 1979. Prior to that they know the score without a doubt but after that not so much. So I'm thinking now.
True, but I meant more in general instead of just in Rolling Stone's opinion.
I am sort of resentful at the Beatles just because there can never be another greatest band of all time. It's like the fact they can never be matched or topped bugs me.

Meh. It has its moments but as an album I'd say its pretty overrated. Oh and much more chuckle at Never Mind the Bullocks being at 41.

Well, yeah.. but the punk bands are the ones that need the money the most. Lil Wayne can have a couple albums dl'd and be ok. Against Me! on the other hand..

I'm not supporting against me anymore. New Wave sold a decent amount of records and the fact that he disowns most of hte early stuff means I odn't want to support him in any way haha. I personally do download a lot.. but it's because I don't have a job nor a credit card. Every time I have a chance to see any band live I do pick up a tshirt (and when possible a vinyl) though.

That's completely false. I had the chance to interview Tom this past spring and he told me about the solo EP and solo shows way before anyone. He said he wanted to bring it back to that style of playing shows.. which is why he made a solo record and is doing solo shows. Just wait to you hear what Against Me! has planned on this new record. I have been listening to this goddamned band for so many fucking years now.

I've stuck by this band through thick and thin... sometimes you just have to step back and let a band evolve.

I've always heard that he really hates his old albums  maybe people were wrong. I don't really plan on buying any of their new stuf fas its just not my thing at all.
