View Full Version : Best Punk* Album Ever
YouMadeTheScene

Ok this may have been done before but I thought I'd throw it out there. This is purely and opinion thread and I hope there isn't much flaming. Now I put punk with a * because I am including any of the genres that fall under it from bands like Steel Train to Rancid to Starting Line to Bane to Mars Volta to Kevin Devine to Brand New etc etc.
So under the umbrella of the punk genre what do you think the best album ever is?
For me i think the best ever is Stay What You Are by Saves The Day.

Imo, this band probably along with The Clash, Pistols and others paved the way for some of todays punk bands and darker bands. So i'm going to go with The Misfits - Static Age

I know for me personally I am relatively new to the "scene" and I haven't heard many of what others may consider classic. But the ones I listed are the best/my favorite ones that I have heard. I am constantly checking out older bands and I will probally end up checking out a bunch of these but I can only comment on what I have heard.

Of the albums that would probably be considered top 10, I would probably pick At The Drive In - Relationship of Command. That's definitely my favorite one to listen to, and the one I still put in the most frequently.

:) I like that you responded to this without getting angry and irrational. You knew that simply by responding you'd be telling me to shut up, or defending yourself, and that you didn't need to add anything aggressive. Very slick :) I respect that.
And definitely take the time to check out some of the older albums that are so well remembered. Some of them are amazing. Others, you won't like nearly as much, and wont listen to that often, but you'll have a whole new appreciation for the stuff you listen to now, because you can see it's roots.

As much as I love Deja Entendu, do people miss the complete concept of best ever?
In theory, this shouldn't be based on personal enjoyment, but that should be one criterion for a greater judgment.
If someone tries to justify that Deja is better (in the context of "greatest punk album ever") than Damaged, I'll flip.

This is what bothers me, why does greatest have to be an objective thing? For me it's very much subjective.. Objectively Led Zepplin may be one of the greatest rock bands of all time.. Subjectively you can shoot me in the head before i'd ever listen to ANY of that.
Brand New means a lot to me, and therefore to ME it is one of the greatest.

Because music, as an art form, is completely objective. Art can be judged to be moving, innovative, having a widespread effect, etc. and that can also apply to music. A dad might like his son's drawing that he hangs over his computer in his cubicle, but that doesn't mean it's "greater" than the Mona Lisa. I'd hope you wouldn't even admit to that.
Music IS objective, no matter how you look at it. I like Deja a lot more than I like a few of the albums on my list, but in my opinion those would qualify as the greatest ever because of their effect, innovation, ability to stand the test of time, etc.
Well... what can you do. Maybe the person has never seen Mona Lisa.
Maybe Brand New is all these kids have.
Definitely Relationship of Command and London Calling. Who doesn't love The Clash?
And I've gotta add Full Collapse. Because we all know how i feel about Mr. Rickly. The man can do no wrong. ;)

I suppose you make good points. However this brings up the main thing I would normally argue in this stiuation, that it is missing the point of 'art' to rate and judge it on an objective level. The purpose of art and music is personal and without personal meaning or value it would be useless/pointless. I can look at a list of the "100 top albums" in Rolling Stone, and be like "cool.. like 3 of these matter to me even remotely" .
It just seems stupid to even rank things like that, Art in ALL forms should be personal. Even ranking "the greatest person" in the world is ridiculous.. it will be different to each individual, and while praise is deserved for some for their accomplishments, it is impossible and ridiculous to attempt to rank people in that way.
Well... what can you do. Maybe the person has never seen Mona Lisa.

I've seen the Mona Lisa, but I still have a 3-year-old's drawing that means a lot to me on my fridge. Forced to choose to burn one: i'd burn the Mona Lisa any day and guaranteed so would the majority of the world if compared to their favorite piece of art. So for this reason; why must it be ranked as the greatest, or one of the greatest?
Maybe Brand New is all these kids have.
I like how you refer to the majority as "kids" though i'm 5 years your senior. And you put down Brand New, who are incredible IMHO, yet are currently listening to Finch.

This isn't true. The purpose of art is NOT personal. Art has a purpose on so many different levels far beyond that. It's true that it's always some sort of an expression, but it's not always "personal." There are endless pieces of art that have no personal substance at all, but are considered the greatest paintings of all time. Bernini was anything but a Catholic, but yet he crafted some of the most amazing sculptures of angels, David, famous saints, church officials, etc. Those works probably had no personal value to him at all, and were definitely not personal expressions. It was form and aesthetic that he was worried about. Therefore, the art becomes objective (to an extent).
I agree that rankings are somewhat stupid, but there are things that are undeniable. It is undeniable that Pet Sounds is a better pop album than A-Teens. That is fact. Pure and simple. So to a certain extent ranking is possible, although through bits of personal opionion (subjectivity) the lists can vary slightly.

Nothing I can say against a well thought-out argument. I believe there is truth in what I said, but what you said about art having many purposes is true as well, and I was only looking at one aspect and you called that. Well done.
