i thought we had a lauryn hill thread already? i remember talking about her with a few members a while back. oh well, the only member of the fugees to matter to me (no disrespect to fans). under a strong marley influence, among other things, lauryn managed to create one of the best albums of the last decade or so with the miseducation of lauryn hill. 10 years on & this album still stands up incredibly well. such captivating, deeply personal & socially conscious lyrics that gave us a judicious commentary on life & social struggles, with a beautiful singing voice that actually doesn't sound out of place rapping, classic rhythms & striking beats. the production is also probably the best i've ever heard on an american hip-hop based record. whether lauryn comes back with another timeless album that can live up to the miseducation will probably/hopefully soon be witnessed, but in the mean time this album remains a classic that will never be forgotten

any fans, share some love & discussion?

worthless piece of information you might be interested in, given your user title. barack obama's wife, michelle, is apparently a big fan of that album & frequently listens to it on her ipod haha

yea i've been listening to it a lot these past couple days, it still sounds as great as ever, just has such a great feel to it. but a thread was needed with so so many rumours floating around that she has soo much recorded material from the past few years that a new album must surely be on the horizon. it will no doubt get bad reviews from everyone because it won't be miseducation part 2, but i don't want that anyway. i'm looking forward to hearing some (possible) musical evolution & seeing where she goes with a new album

i caught the end of an interview with michelle & an international new zealand news correspondent. most of the tough questions i would have liked to hear i missed, but at the end they seemed to have a "get to know michelle obama on a more casual note" style & they asked about music haha. i thought it was pretty cool

I always loved the Fugees...her solo stuff was good as well...but the Fugees "the Score" will always have a spot in my music collection

the fugees had a great sound & great urban tones throughout their music, but i couldn't get into either of the two males vocals/rapping. sometimes the lyrics were great, but besides the odd song, they just never sat with me well. i know... doesn't make much sense to me either mate haha. but it's bloody good to see you posting around again, been too long

edit: i liked their bob marley influence too, but i couldn't stand when they actually covered him haha

it's such a shame cause boy the fugees could have been phenomenal. well they are in most peoples minds already, but they just could have been so much better & more enjoyable to me haha

oh you know me mate, just keep on lovin' & livin'. finished uni for the year, on summer holidays, which has started out well since i'm home & listening to curtis mayfield till the garage calls me about fixing the electrics in my car haha. but oh well, such is life. how're you?

Suspiria is fantastic. Dario Argento is a brilliant filmmaker. I recently picked up the Anchor Bay two-disc edition of Opera. It's wonderful (save for the metal score that didn't fit the ambiance the script attempted to cultivate).

I still like her music. There was a huge debate in my History of Hip Hop class about her ideals making her irrelevant to mainstream music.

I imagine a genre of music so heavily associated with an oppressed minority, predicated on lending a distinct, contemporary sound from said minority as they use it as a tool to deliver their message of equality being distributed by someone who, in turn, represents bigotry herself would defeat the philosophical subtext of Hip Hop. It's a bit silly.

Essentially it was most of the class thinking she was undermining the progress of hip hop and the other small group thought she was empowered.

I'm not sure if this is already widely known news, but it looks like Lauryn has decided to start touring again, with a date in New Zealand fast approaching. Maybe this is a return to music full time, with a new album on the way, maybe this is just a few play dates for her, who knows. But it's a good sign if you ask me.

Someone'sCoat
12/27/09, 03:53 AM
Really? That's awesome. Is there a list of dates or no? Doubt she'd come ot the Pacific Northwest but my hopes are high.

Lauryn is such a pain in the ass. She tours, she doesn't, she goes into hiding, she comes out, she hints at creating a new album, she procrastinates forever... ugh, make up your damn mind! She's lucky the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is such a good album after all of that.

Yes! Love Lauryn Hill, I agree with the original poster. I have her MTV Unplugged album too, I haven't listened to it at as much but it's good for the collection. I think the stigma/rumors surrounding what she said are false too, things were most likely taken out of context. I hope she continues with her music career.
