books that are being into made into movies are then made with the movie covers. Seriously. It bugs me to look at an aisle of books, and all I see are the movie covers like: Choke, The Road, Into The Wild, etc.
Is it just me? I would never buy one of the books. I seek out the original cover.

My feelings exactly. Choke, for example, had an awesome cover before the "movie edition" came out. The new is stylish and all, but...
I'm the same, although buying them online usually solves it. Luckily it takes a while for stuff to get popular here, so it's not too hard.

First edition covers are always the best.

I always like seeing that little blurb that says soon to be a motion picture, makes me feel like it will be a good book and it won't have the yucky old book smell

I don't mind when there's a sticker that has the small blurb, but publishing an entirely new book bugs me.

This annoys me as well. Oddly enough though I've never seen an altered cover of a Harry Potter book.
Not that I'm complaining, it just seems strange because of how popular the movies are.

Hmmm, you're right. Interesting.
I saw a cover of Blindness that had Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, and Danny Glover on it. Soooo much worse than the original cover.

Who cares? Most of the time we either carry the originals, or you can order them. Same goes for hardcovers. Just because you don't see it in the store, doesn't mean it is out of print.

I wanted to buy The Road the other day and all I could find was the movie cover copy. It's annoying.

I try not to buy the movie covers if I can; unfortunately, most bookstores tend to just stock those once they come out. I wish I had the original Fight Club and Into the Wild covers, as good as those movies are.

i usually own the books before they become movies, so this is never a problem. however, i hate it too. especially choke. into the wild had an okay cover.

I'm glad Harry Potter hasn't done this. Go Jo for taking control!
I noticed this though the other day at my campus B&N cause there's a table of books that were made into movies recently like Into the Wild, There Will Be Blood, and Twilight--Twilight looked terrible but I actually liked the cover for the Road compared to the version I have.

I'm so with you! I always think that when I see that little oval down in the corner saying something about the movie coming out. Haha.

Well, Twilight has a movie cover too. There are two versions, two pics I mean. I prefer the apple original version. It has a meaning-forbidden fruit. Nights in Rodanthe=ew! gross! yuck!

I have the original Into The Wild cover too. I like it.
And I agree with the Twilight cover being terrible. It's hideous.

see I look at the cover once so I never really pay much attention to it
and Twilight is hideous regardless of the cover, is soft core vampire porn really what 13 year olds are into? gross

Harry Potter doesn't need it. The books were selling at an absurd rate before the movies came out, it doesn't need to advertise to get people to buy those books. It's a line of books that really appeals to and has something for almost every demographic, so there's no need to try to buy a movie audience when 95% of the movie goers already own the books.
However, as unappealing as they often are, a movie book cover draws in a greater audience for the book. Between people who heard about the movie and like to read before watching, or people who watch the movie then want to read the book, a book cover based on the movie is an easy way to catch peoples' eyes and generate more sales.

Nope. The appeal is reading about a fictional guy that is so damn perfect it makes you swoon. Well, girls at least. :sigh:
