I actually don't mind Chiodos but they really aren't that refreshing in any aspect... everything they do has been done better. I barely find a reason to listen to them anymore but at one point they were a favorite.

Every time I hear Chiodos it just sounds like yelling. And I'm not impressed by orchestration usually because, and lunchforthesky brought this up in the Razia's Shadow thread, bands don't use a conventional approach to writing orchestral music. You can have all of the strings you want, it still doesn't change the fact that you started writing the song on an acoustic guitar or plinking around on a piano.

I guess I just want a stronger representation of the Detroit music scene and they have kind of defined it lately and that bothers me because there are a lot of bands trying to do more progressive things from around here.

it definitely isn't on an acoustic guitar, but
i think a lot of composers start on a piano, and then write for orchestra.
that's why in a lot of classical piano pieces, you can hear the piano being voiced as if it were an orchestra. what, in your opinion is the conventional approach then?

The conventional approach is intending for a piece to be written for an ensemble, instead of writing a rock song and having a string section accompany it to sound more mature/lighter/whatever their intent is. I guarantee that Chiodos don't care about things like phrasing or counterpoint when it comes to 'arranging' their strings, they're far more concerned with it complementing the electric sound of the band.

I'm torn on it. I think it's a fun album, something different to listen to, but I think the story is very weak. It's really like two stories thrown together, and both are incredibly basic, which ends up taking away from the product as a whole.

Disappointment, but you are missing the fact that they contributed something to music and people here respect the band for that, at least. They weren't landmark albums, but they were most definitely noteworthy and lumping them in with bands like Aiden or Madina Lake is a little bit of a stretch. Underoath I don't feel should be on that list either. They are another band who actually contributed as well.
