The big deal is, he did a lot for the advancement of the Church and tried to spread world peace. He brought the Church's ties with the eastern world a lot closer, and reformed what most people saw as an "old-guard" church into a modern church. There is no doubt in my mind that over the past 30 years (I think that's how long he's been pope), he's had more effect on the world than any other human being, and almost all of it good.

i'll keep this really simple.

all the hardcore Catholics. the ones in charge of churchs ive been to. all believe that you must be catholic to go to heaven. yet no where. NO WHERE in the bible it says that. they make up stupid shit about Lent. they go more on what the Pope says than what the bible says. they just made up so much crap that has no biblical support. and when you dont follow it you are somehow going to hell, for not following the pope. that just makes no sense to me. plus they care more about if you go to church every week (which i do anyway) than they do about if you actualyl do indeed have a relationship with Christ. thinking if you go to church every week then you are a good Christian. which is is far off... its a joke. example... go stand in a garage and say "vrom vroom" are you a car cause you';re in there? hell no... its just idiotic

i think thats a joke. they have good intentions yes... but the way they do it is fucked

Did they explicitely tell you that you must be Catholic to go to Heaven? Because the Church post-Vatican II states "salvation is not the sole property of the Church". You can thank the Pope (not this Pope obviously) for that. Now, I won't talk about your problems with the Church. Those are all personal and obviously they mean a lot to you, so I won't trivialize them. But, to claim that it doesn't matter that the Pope died, or that his death is less important than Mitch Hedberg's is absolutely ridiculous and a plea for attention.

This Pope has done more for world peace than anyone else in the last 30 years. Be fucking realistic.

I'm with you on this completely. The Bible has been interpreted in different ways by different people for many different uses for so fucking long. If you look at most of the huge-scale horrible shit in the past (racism, etc...) they were all fully supported by biblical interpretations of the time.

hahaha, how contradictory of yourself

So, you'll take the interpretations of Jesus from people who never knew him over interpretations of the Bible from people who never lived then? Why is the Bible more authoritative than the word of a church leader from today? Paul's Epistles are exactly the same as what the Pope does today, but yet you value those as law, and call the Pope a joke. Get some sense.

Maybe God is killing the Pope on purpose to interupt your soap opera as a way to remind you that you shouldn't be watching stupid fucking shit?

Does it make you feel guilty? the knowledge that you are responsible for the death of the pope? because of your horrible choices in television programming?

I have very good reasoning to be watching them!!! I live in the middle of nowhere, my sister takes my car to work everyday, so I can't go anywhere, and my phone is disconnected, so i can't calllllll anyone to go anywhere. So, the only exciting thing to do, while sitting home alone, is watching rich people be overly dramatic.

No I'm pretty sure that's true. Well for a bunch of the letters of Paul I know it is anyway..he didn't write most of them, most theologians think that his followers wrote most of the letters and they're just attributed to Paul.

This is not true in the slightest. Most scholars accept that The Gospel of John was written between AD 95 and 100, with some even putting it as far back as 160 (the earliest assertion is 70). So along these lines, John would have to have been around 100 years old when he wrote the Gospel. That's incredibly old for that time, and almost impossible that the actual Apostle wrote the Gospel. What most scholars believe is that it was written by a sect of Christians that had studied under John, and used his name as a "title" to gain credibility.

Revelation was written in AD 96. That's accepted by almost every Biblical scholar. The only reason it's even attributed to John is because there are similarities in style to the Gospel. Revelation also showcases a lot of knowledge about Christian persectution in Asia Minor, which John the Apostle would have no knowledge of.

Now, Matthew is the most likely of all the Evangelists to have actually written the Gospel attributed to him. It was most likely written between 60 and 65, almost definitely before the destruction of Jerusalem. While Mark and Luke are very Pauline, Matthew is one of the most "Jewish" of all the Gospels. So it's possible that he was still alive at the time he was 60 or 65, and if he couldn't write at that age, he likely could have dictated it. Although, most modern scholars just say that it's written by "anonymous."

The point of this is: forget what you think you know about Jesus or the Bible. It's most likely not true. Jesus never wrote a single word in his life (that has survived today). The Gospels post-date Paul's epistles, they are most likely not first-hand accounts.

So it comes back to the original question: why is it that much different for the Pope to interpret what he believes are Jesus' true words, but Paul's epistles (which are more antagonistic letters than letters of inspiration) and the Gospels have unquestioned authority as the word of God?
