The Mars Volta vs Sparta

Soooo im pretty sure At the Drive In is awesome. but whos better out of the two bands they created after ATDI split? I'd say The Mars Volta > Sparta. but what do you guys think?

i went it mars volta, they might be a self-indulgent band, but they're interesting to say the least.

also, I remember seeing Sparta back in 02, they were opening up for Jimmy Eat World, and I remember being somewhat excited, since it was part of ATDI, and they were the most boring live band i've ever seen outside of a small local show. Cave In played a quick 30 min set before them and totally rocked the house, I just rememered thinking, these guys used to be part of ATDI????

not that it isn't creative, they're definately the best experimental band, but its still experimental.

Agreed. I picked The Mars Volta for the same reason. I liked Frances the Mute, but it had so much bullshit in between the songs that it got annoying to listen to.

i went with volta.

both band put out awesome debut lps (deloused being the better though).
but the last two sparta records were way under par, while at least volta has been putting out good stuff. even though i have all of volta's material, i don't listen to them much unless i'm in a volta mood where i'll listen to them non-stop for awhile.


but...the best song written by either band is sparta's collapse.
that song gives me chills.
