Both of these genre films are gaining considerable Best Picture buzz, which is weird since they are both in genre's (animation and superhero) which almost never get this kind of buzz. What is your opinion on this?

I'd like both to get nominated. But I'd actually prefer Wall-E to win. Dark Knight has become a trend, almost like Napolean Dynamite was. The Dark Knight was amazing, but so was Batman Begins. This obsession to me seems to be founded on Ledger's death, which is sad.

I think Wall-E has a better chance of getting nominated, personally, though I have a feeling neither will. With Revolutionary Road, Milk, Frost/Nixon, Australia, Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler, Rachel Getting Married AND Che all coming out in the next couple months, it looks like it may be a longshot.
That being said, look at that awesome plate of movies we get in the next couple months.

I'd agree. I'm excited for Slumdog Millionaire and the Wrestler the most of those, I think. I'll probably end up seeing all of them though, eventually. Which one is Che? Doesn't ring a bell.

I read this the other day ( http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2008/11/oscars-news-813.html ) and thought that maybe The Dark Knight has a chance. In the end though i doubt it gets nominated.

Soderbergh's new Che Guevara biopic starring Benecio Del Toro. Just under 4 hours running time, and is unfortunately being split in two like Kill Bill.

Wall-E, easily. The Dark Knight isn't that incredible, although that has never stopped the Academy before.

Ideally I would love to see them both be nominated, but if I had to choose just one it would probably be Wall-E.

Like TJ has said, with movies like Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Revolutionary Road, Australia, Milk and The Wrestler i doubt either gets a nom.
At this point in the Oscar race, there are a lot of films still heavily vying for a best picture nomination (Australia, Benjamin Button, Milk, Doubt, Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, Frost/Nixon, Che, The Wrestler)all of which look very good. If any of those are better than Wall-e or The Dark Knight, then by all means, they should be nominated, but at this point Wall-e and The Dark Knight are two of the best films I've ever seen. They completely deserve a best picture nod, unless another film deserves it more.

I'm kind of worried that we know so little about Australia and Slumdog Millionaire

It's going to be shown in full for a week in New York and Los Angeles, It's too bad it's only in those cities though

I don't think either can be taken up for Best Picture honestly.

I've heard tons of brilliant things about Slumdog. Agreed I haven't heard anything on Australia, though.

You know when two different critics use the word phantasmagorical (look it up), you got something special.

It depends on this next crop of films coming out but I would give Wall-E the nomination before The Dark Knight
I just can't see The Dark Knight getting nominated.
Both should be nominated. TDK was a great movie, and as a longtime batman fan, I thought that Ledger's portrayal of The Joker was the most accurate representation of the comic character; as was Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman. That said, I dislike how the film has become a fad more than being appreciated as a piece of art. It seems like I cannot go a single day without seeing at least one person in a Joker shirt.
As for Wall-E, I would love to see it win best picture. It was amazing in that it was simple enough for a small child to enjoy, whilst being complex enough that an adult would thoroughly enjoy it as well. Also, I liked the fact that the humor was more subtle and dark than Pixar's other efforts, and the film was a great piece of social commentary as well.
