Okay, im pretty sure I know what AP kids will end up voting for but let me defend a little bit here....

Garden State
- Clever
- Generational
- Brought Indie Music to the World (ha)

Juno
- Better Writing
- Funnier
- Brought a new wave of indie music to the world...and got an oscar.

And everyone likes Juno because it has "great writing". I pray that Diablo Cody's horror film sounds like this one so people will realize how awful Juno really was.

At least Braff is talented both behind the camera, and in front of it. No denying that he has a great cinematic eye. He has some very P.T. Anderson-esque shots.

The characters were "so over the top indie"? What the hell is that supposed to mean? It's a movie, not a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah concert.

That being said, I don't know what to vote. I've only seen both movies once, but I think I'll go with Garden State.

i'm serious! haha i really did find juno to be completely enjoyable and much more accessible than garden state. it was hilarious and touching at the same time. why all the juno hate?

I think Juno's character was obviously supposed to be over the top with her 21st century lingo....that was absolutely the point of her character. And the fact that her dimeanor didnt' change throughout the course of the film was purposely done as well....

Juno was fucking horrible. Basically showed that girls shouldn't take teenage pregnancy seriously, or at least put a decent amount into thinking about their decisions. She was irresponsible and wae like "oh, I'll get an abortion...oh I'll throw it up for adoption to these peopl because they seem nice". Plus, in the end, she really made the Michael Cera's character take little to no respnsibility for taking care of the fucking thing....that's sending a great message.

Also, the music fucking SUCKED. SUCKED SUCKED SUCKED.

Garden State was a fine movie. I enjoyed it for what it was and it was shot very ...different than most movies, but it didn't live up to all the hype.

was there anything un-believable that she did though? its not like her actions were far-fetched, a lot of suburban girls get knocked up and deal with it in different ways...

if anything it showed how responsible she was for understanding that she was not mature enough by any means to be a mother, and instead of killing it, she gave it up for adoption.

Juno sucks. I praised it when it came out and its not horrible, but for the amount of praise it gets it certainly is. The characters are unrealistic and annoying, and I can't begin to describe how annoying the writing is. Also, Garden State's music kicks the shit out fo Juno's.

That's not modern day indie (whatever the hell that means), its just movies that slightly vary from the norm. Only slightly. Indie means independent, rightttt? So how are these movies with studio backings and million-dollar-plus budgets 'indie.'?

The closest thing I can think of that's been released semi-recently that most people know of would be The Squid & the Whale. I'd say that qualifies. I'm not saying being truly 'indie' automatically denotes quality, just this rampant misuse of the word is irritating because I'm such a film geek.

Its like how every band with a piano is now an indie band too. The word has lost all meaning. And that's not name-dropping at all, I know a lot of people who know about Primer, but then again, they actually like movies.

I liked Juno upon my first viewing...but it got way too overrated way too quick. And yeah, I guess Garden State can be considered overrated as well, but there are so many films that deserved an oscar spot that got fucked because of Juno. I agree with everything that you said there.

I agree with you that Juno did get overrated. I remember about a year ago when I saw a preview and thought that this looks like a movie me and a few of my friends would love. The next thing I knew, everybody started loving it and even talking like her, which is weird because it is a type of movie that I expected no one in my town like. Even though it can seem overrated, I still like it because its a sweet film, and Juno is a character that I can relate to.

Que?

And Garden State is much funnier than Juno. When Andrew wakes up in Marks house, that whole scene makes me cry everytime from laughter.
I don't really remember the part that you are talking about. I've seen most of this movie, but not from start to finish. Maybe I'll either rent it, or wait until its on IFC again.

It was subtle humor.

"It says balls on your face"

(or whatever he said)

"Last time I saw you, you were doing coke lines off a urinal."

So much better than:

"Honest to blog?"
hahaha honest to blog is clearly the only line of the entire movie i love it

I agree with everything that you said there.

I agree with you that Juno did get overrated. I remember about a year ago when I saw a preview and thought that this looks like a movie me and a few of my friends would love. The next thing I knew, everybody started loving it and even talking like her, which is weird because it is a type of movie that I expected no one in my town like. Even though it can seem overrated, I still like it because its a sweet film, and Juno is a character that I can relate to.
It is basically the exact same thing that happened with Napoleon Dynamite, haha.

Do you want me to go and pick out every single cheese line from the movie? I've got the script on my computer if you want me to.

Edit: Just opened the script. Here we go:

Juno: Quiet, Banana. Hey, shut your gob
for a second, okay?

ROLLO
Well, well. If it isn’t MacGuff the
Crime Dog! Back for another test?

ROLLO
This is your third test today, Mama
Bear. Your eggo is preggo, no doubt
about it!

JUNO
Silencio! I just drank my weight in
Sunny D. and I have to go, pronto.

JUNO
Yes, hello, I need to procure a hasty
abortion?...What was that? I’m sorry,
I’m on my hamburger phone and it’s
kind of awkward to talk on. It’s
really more of a novelty than a
functional appliance.

NO ONE TALKS LIKE THIS!

It's a great script. It is. But that doesn't mean the dialogue is realistic in my opinion

I liked both movies.

But I have to laugh at all the people who are saying Garden State is SO realistic. The characters in Garden State talk more like real people, but Juno is a FAR more realistic movie in terms of plot and situation.

Unless you and all your friends spend your time hanging out in empty mansions, shooting flaming arrows in the sky to pass the time, or like to stand on the edges of endless abysses, screaming all your existential angst into black nothingness. Hell, I don't know what kids do these days.

You make valid points. The concept of teen pregnancy and everything that happened in Juno is totally realistic.

At the same time, I think almost every single thing that happened in Garden State happens in real life too. The endless abyss thing was just one scene - not like that happens to everyone, all the time.

You're 100% right that Juno was way more realistic than Juno. Plus with the language and all, I think its a teenage thing. Most kids use some sort of slang, or at least quite a few that I know do.

It's Bill Milner as Will Proudfoot from the movie Son of Rambow. Twas one of my favorite movies this year. Just a really heartwarming story.

Edit: and by the way, first time I saw your new avatar, I elicited a hearty chuckle and said "Pivot!" out loud.

I voted Garden State even though I loved Juno. Garden State I felt had more depth to it, more of a coming of age film then Juno in which she feels no remorse for anything. Hell, it wasn't until she had the baby she finally showed some real emotion for it.

It's about this young boy named Will who grows up in a religious community called The Brethren who are not allowed to mix with the "secular" world, listen to music, or watch television or movies. That last bit plays an important part for Will after he meets and befriends Lee Carter, a seeming bully at first who later reveals himself to be a little more complicated. Will and Lee bond over a bootleg copy of Rambo: First Blood that Lee has recorded in a movie theater. Will becomes so captivated by his first film viewing that he immediately agrees to help Lee make a movie of their own to submit to a screen contest for youths. The rest of the movie is about their budding friendship and it's really touching the way they wrap the whole thing up. I highly suggest it.

Realism has nothing to do with whether or not I like a movie. It's a well done unplanned pregnancy movie but outside of the personality of the lead character, everything is rather basic. The unusual circumstances found in Garden State were what I really enjoyed about the movie.

Also I find the first like, 5-10 minutes of Juno unwatchable, ha.
