View Full Version : How to release an album for free...

Okay, I've got a question that I feel like the peeps at AP would really have some great input about.
My band, The Score (www.myspace.com/rockthescore (http://www.myspace.com/rockthescore)), has recently recorded a full-length record, "Songs for a Halfway Home" (produced in part by Ace Enders). We want to give it away for free. What do you think is the best way to go about doing this? Currently, we're thinking of using songsforahalfwayhome.com with something like a rapidshare download that would keep track of the number of times the album was downloaded. Should we try to work with a site like Absolutepunk and offer an exclusive download? What are your thoughts? We don't care about making money from the album, we just want everyone to hear it, because we think it's GREAT! I'd love to hear some cool ideas and I would appreciate the input!

I've looked at noisetrade before and it seems like a neat site. I'm just trying to think of the best way to get the word out and get as many people to enjoy this record as possible, and noisetrade is a solid option.

noisetrade.com
That was my first thought too.
Maybe try Jamendo, it's a pretty cool site. I have one of my albums on there, not sure how much real publicity it's given me but it's fun to drop in from time to time and see how many people have listened or downloaded.

Absolutely. If you can't do that, you should definitely upload it to mediafire.com (which is like rapidshare but offers unlimited downloads and no waiting times) and post links in the self-promotion forum.

Haha thank you! Hopefully you'll download the new album when it becomes available! Jamendo seems like an interesting option too, but ultimately it think it becomes a matter of making sure everyone in the universe knows how to get it.

YES. Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro (both Vito Corleones) acting opposite eachother was the shit.

Yeah I'll be sure to download it, and I would definitely try to do something through AP.

I would definitely love to do something as an exclusive with AP.net. I frequent the website a lot and I think it's a great community of people that love music. I'll have to go through the proper channels to see if that's a possibility. Maybe we could do some kind of early exclusive release and then release it later on our own?

Oh i didn't forget! Might have been his best role. (I'm serious) It was good, but doesn't take my cake. Though, after seeing The Score, I completely understood why he didn't want to do The Italian Job. It was like, the same effing role.

I like your initial idea with the songsforahalfwayhome.com/rapidshare thing, didn't empires do something similar with Howl? worked well.

Upload it all to mediafire, and link to it on your myspace. Also, try and get it put into a news post on AP` if possible.
