I've been thinking a lot about this recently, and honestly I can't think of a time where it's ever been worse at one point in time. Let's recap.

Seattle Mariners - after winning 88 games a year before, in 2008 the team goes 61-101, the worst record in the American League.

Seattle Seahawks - after winning the NFC West 4 straight years, the team loses 5 WRs to injury to start the season, loses their star quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for 6 weeks, and currently sits at 2-7, tied for last place, and the worst the team has been years.

Seattle Sonics - Purchased by Clay Bennett and moved to Oklahoma City following the 2nd worst record in the NBA in 2007. The city no longer has an NBA franchise.

Washington Huskies - One of the more storied college football programs in America, it keeps getting worse as the team falls to 0-9. Coach Ty Willingham has been asked to resign.

Does it get any worse than this? Can anybody think of a time where an entire city has had so much disaster at any one point in time? Honestly, I think this has to be the worst it's ever been in sports history. I don't see how it can't be.

from simmons this week:

29. Seattle Seahawks
From Seattle reader Justin Sund: "I don't know who else to write to, SG. This has been ABSOLUTELY the worst year in Seattle sports history, and now the Tuba Guy has been killed. (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/jamieson/386267_robert04xx.html) This is worse than a Sucker Punch, worse than finding your girlfriend sleeping with your brother. … Our number one fan is dead, and it only further reminds me of how dead Seattle sports are in general. What do you do when that guy you saw before and after EVERY Mariners game disappears?"
(I don't know what to say anymore, Justin. If there's a silver lining, the rest of the country finally seems to be catching on after I spent two straight months writing about it and printing your e-mails in this column. A Sports Illustrated writer even regurgitated most of those thoughts and ideas for a column this week. So, I'd say national empathy is coming around. Hang in there.)

Sadly, I can't argue with you. I sat here for a while trying to think of something worse, but I can't. Seattle has a lot of work to do to get back to mediocrity.

yea you may have a point haha

i mean even cities that had numerous terrible teams at least had good teams in other sports to balance it out (Detroit comes to mind)

The worst part is not that all our pro franchises are bad too, but that Husky football is the joke of the entire nation.

What a depressing topic.

I can't even miss the Sonics because I know they'd be a shitty losing team like the rest -- going through this failure your whole life, always coming up a day late & a dollar short ... that shouldn't be how you feel when it comes to sports in your city.

Apple Cup is going to be a horrendous joke game, and I have little to no faith the M's will make any valuable improvements or that the Seahawks will recover from this wash of a season.

Give the Twin Cities time. The Vikings are bound to move sooner or later, every sports team has gotten rid of (or will in the case of Gaborik) their franchise player and none of the professional sports team or major college teams look like they're doing anything worthwhile soon. But for now, Seattle is not a great place to be a sports fan.

Every team that doesn't win the title in their sport that makes the playoffs are "let-downs," no? If that's the case, then on the basis of the Lions, Tigers, and Pistons not winning titles in the 90's, Detroit is on par with the Phillies.

haha yes... and also about you being a holier-than-thou asshole at the moment.

Every team that doesn't win the title in their sport that makes the playoffs are "let-downs," no? If that's the case, then on the basis of the Lions, Tigers, and Pistons not winning titles in the 90's, Detroit is on par with the Phillies.

fair enough.

rather be let down in the playoffs or making a run for it than finishing in last place or not being able to win a game.

and you're god damn right i'm being an asshole right now. all you philly fuckers have been so obnoxious on this board with this woe is me shit. get some perspective.

i wouldn't classify myself as a "woe is me, philly fucker," but if that's your point-of-view (lol), that's fine with me. i wasn't looking for pity or sympathy for philly teams.

Let's play a fun game to verify Scott's point:

Eagles - since '01, 5 playoff appearances, 4 straight conference championships, 1 SB appearance.
Flyers - since '01, 5 playoff appearances (actually, hadn't missed the playoffs since 1994), 2 conference finals
Phillies - since '01, 1 losing season (80-81), 2 playoff appearances, 3 MVP's, 1 MOY, 1 World Series
Sixers - since '01, 5 playoff appearances, 01 NBA Finals

That's a total of 17 playoff appearances out of a possible 27...63% of your seasons for the last 7 years have ended with MORE GAMES!!!!

When the Flyers were bad in the early 90's, the Phillies were going to the World Series. Since then, the Flyers have missed the playoffs once, the Eagles found a franchise QB and gave you several great seasons, the Phillies made winning the MVP look easy, and the Sixers are rebuilding...so that when one of the up teams goes down, they replace them.

That Philly hadn't won a championship isn't "torture"...its inconvenient...but imagine being a Lions fan. Instead of seeing 4 conference finals, a super bowl, and 5 playoff appearances, they saw like 21-80 and no playoffs.

Perspective was the word used, and if you cant see that Philly didn't have it that bad, when, then it only solidifies why I hate Philly sports

terrible year. i'm by far the most disappointed in the seahawks.
they are too talented to be this bad.
yes injuries have kicked our ass,
but we just make too many mistakes, give up too many big plays, and are too conservative sometimes.
we'll get a top 10 pick next year, which will help in the first few rounds.
1st round we should get michael crabtree (if available, too good to pass up. branch has been hurt too much right now, if we are able to get crabtree, we could trade branch and have burleson and crabtree starting with engram in the slot)
but yeah we do have bigger problems that we should draft for.
o line is always important
and i love our d-ends, but we need more inside pressure.
trufant is my guy but jennings and wilson have given up huge plays.
if we dont take crabtree or he's off the board, we should take malcolm jenkins form ohio state..shutdown corner.
also, our safety play has been pretty weak. deon grant can be good at times but russell is lacking. we could take taylor mays from usc if not jenkins/crabtree.
i don't know. there are a lot of areas we can improve on
we should also look at a qb in one of the rounds for sure.
i love seneca but we need a young guy to start mentoring to take over after matt
the only truly solid position we have is linebacker. we need to make sure we resign leroy hill though.
anyway, that is my seahawks rant.
i was so pumped for this season :(

right, that's what makes it so bad. minnesota is hardly a national powerhouse - washington was a powerhouse program for nearly a century.
For some reason I was still thinking about this topic on my flight home, but wouldn't it be worse to have forty years of futility after being so successful?

EDIT: Don't mean to rain on your pity parade about losing the Sonics and the Mariners being a failure after spending money in free agency (go ahead and have it); it's just something that came up. I should just stop.

I knew this would come up...so here is what I thought was obvious

If you told a Philly fan, prior to their World Series win, "Hey, don't be so sad about your hometown teams losing, at least the Steelers won a Super Bowl...and darn, isn't that Penguins team getting better", you'd understandably get the thrashing of your life...fan bases aren't built by state borders. Ever think a Duke fan would be happy UNC won because "they're only 20 minutes away"

You're never going to get a fan base to root for their rival of 100 years...never...that should be obvious whether you care about Washington teams or not, that's a universal sports rule

The M's might be the best shot Seattle has for achieving at the very least mediocrity. GM Z is doing some really awesome things and I'm way more optimistic for the team than I have been in a long time.

Mid-90's Cleveland was pretty depressing... While the Indians were very good and the Cavs saw some success during this time, the loss of the Browns was terrible for the city. Cleveland is by far a football town, so I feel the pain of losing a beloved team.

You guys have the Seattle Sounders to look forward too at least. They're not going to be that bad at all, especially for an expansion team. They're definitely going to be my second team to follow next season.

Their uniforms are really nice...

To end December without a single head coach or manager who was employed in January returning for the next year? It's enough to make Seattle fans feel as if Cleveland fans have had it good.Jesus, now that is ridiclous...on top of having a franchise move.

The Mariners are looking as if they won't ever get better, but I'm not extremely worried with the Seahawks. For a good amount of the year we were without our whole starting wide receiver We'll get a good draft pick this draft and hopefully not be as injury stucken next year. For the Seahawks there is hope, but there's still a shit baseball team and no NHL or NBA team. Continuing with Washington sports in general, Washington's football team is a disgrace to college football and my Washington State Cougars aren't much better. Wash. St. and Gonzaga keep choking in men's basketball and the Huskies aren't much better. But Gonzaga can be and probably will be really good, even this year. Wazzu is just young, nine freshmen which is tied for the most in D-1. Overall though, the state of Washington is not looking too great at the moment.

yep...because that was the point of this discussion...it was totally about sports being more important than having a job.

We're in a sports forum, the "sport" aspect of it is implied in every discussion...unless someone specifically makes a different topic (like the general thread)

I'm sure as an expansion team, last place is certain. Still, since I don't have the Sonics to turn to during the quiet winter period, I'm going to study on MLS so I can get to know my new team & their sport/opponents. From what I see our pitching has a lot of work to do, we have Bedard and Hernandez, but that's about it. I'd really like to see Dickey become more consistent because he's either 0-2 runs or 8-10 runs. In the infield we have Beltre who is a pretty solid player, but not much else. Lopez is decent, but I don't know if we can count on the all-star year that he had a couple years back and from what I saw last year Betancourt really isn't anything special. Then in the outfield we are completely relying upopn Ichiro to not only carry the outfield, but the team. And we must admit, he is starting to age and he's not what he used to be. I haven't really followed our moves in the offseason, other than we lost Ibanez, who was probably our best player, to free agency and I remember seeing somewhere that we traded Putz, but I don't remember who we got. It's just a struggling organization in my eyes and I just hope that they've got something up their sleeves that I don't see, but something tells me that they don't. But we'll see.

I know people dismissed Cleveland earlier but i hope this puts it into perspective:

Browns: Last Super Bowl Championship - 1964
1970- 1995
- 194-195-3 record
- 6 Division titles
- 10 playoff appearances
- 0-3 in Conference Championship games
1995 – Art Modell rips the heart out of the city by moving the Browns to Baltimore
1999- present
- 54-106 record
- 1 playoff appearance

Indians: Last World Series Championship - 1948
1960 to 1993,
- 0.465 franchise winning percentage
- one third-place and 5 fourth-place finishes
- No division titles
- No playoff appearances
Since 1948,
- 7 division titles
- 0.505 franchise winning percentage
- 2-4 in ALCS appearances
- 0-3 in World Series appearances

Cavs: No NBA Championships
- In its 38 years in the league, has won the Central Division championship only once (1976-77 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976-77_NBA_season)) and the Eastern Conference championship only once (2006-07 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006-07_NBA_season)).
- 16 playoff appearances
- 1 - 3 in conference finals

No NHL teams. A couple of minor league hockey teams and indoor soccer teams. No major colleges ( unless you count Cleveland St. ,Case Western Reserve, or John Carroll)

There are plenty of cities that boast some woeful records of failure - Buffalo, Cleveland, Philly until recently - but that is not what the thread is about. The current shape of Cleveland sports is in pretty good shape when compared to Seattle - the Cavs have five losses, the Browns sucked this year but have a decent amount of talent, and the Indians were one win from the world series two years ago, and played great the second half of the season last year. Compare those teams with the Seattle franchises and you will see why that city is in such poor shape concerning its sports.

Also, I know Cleveland does not have a major college and I know that Ohio State is in Columbus....but every single person I have ever met from Cleveland worships Ohio State.

I'm not trying to take away from what is happening in Seattle and yes i agree that it is more likely than not that Seattle is in worse shape sports wise than any city in the U.S. ever.

I was just providing evidence to inform people who caasually dismissed that Cleveland was not in bad shape . in the early 90's that town was hurting , very badly economiclly and in professional athletics. I was bron in Cleveland and love the cities sports teams as you love Seatle's teams.

You asked the question " Has there EVER been a city in worse shape?"

That is what this whole thread was supposed to be debating, which leads to the comparison of cities during certian time periods.

I was just saying that there is an argument for Cleveland. That is all.

can you make an argument for cleveland then instead of posting their entire franchise history?

wrppdarndyrfngr
12/31/08, 12:31 PM
i can try .

Cleveland circa 1990 -1995:

Browns :
- go 39-57 in 6 seasons , averaging 6 wins a season
- unexpectally moved to Baltimore

Indians:
- Average 4th place in their division , no playoffs, crumbling stadium , new one being built , hope with Berega, lofton, and Visquel

Cavs:
- I was wrong here I didn;t realise they went to the playoffs 5 years in a row , getting out of the 1st round twice

Thats it - looking back on it now it doesn't look as bad as i thought.

I do admitt tho that there are periods when one the 3 Cleveland teams were doing well , Browns in the late 80's ( 3 AFC championship games) , Cavs in the early 90's , and Indians in late 90's ( 2 world series)

From a wider persepctive though Cleveland have not been world champions since 1964
