View Full Version : what "killed Mtv?"

while it "still exists" Mtv has long since been dead, not even in darth vader "more machine than...whatever ppl who loved it thought it was" territory. Other than just being friggin awful for decades, is there a particular source that has pretty much killed it, in terms of its brainwashing impact on young ppl, and lead them to essentially find the same thing elsewhere?

The Real World and the appeal of hip hop killed MTV.

MTV imploded on itself when it turned its back on the original premise of the channel: MUSIC VIDEOS! I don't care about stupid reality shows. Even FNMTV failed miserably. What's so wrong with just playing music videos? I don't want to hear people's opinions about the videos, just play the damn thing! So they created MTV2...again, failure. I also don't think it's fair that MTV, MTV2, MTV Tres, and MTVJams are all channels that are nearly COMPLETELY devoted to hip hop and pop. I mean, I like some rap now and then, but what the Hell happened to all the rock?

For people who actually like music, and liked watching music videos in the 80's and most of the 90's, MTV is dead. For those who love the quality of shows like the one where you are seduced into having sex with your ex or the one where you sit on a couch with your girlfriend's parents and disrespect them for a half hour....MTV is alive. For the MTV executives who are sitting in money right now, MTV is alive. I guess MTV is still alive, it just depends on who you ask. I've always thought that by putting on the types of shows that MTV does, which are built on material posessions and ignorance/stupidity, it has made our generation (especially teenage girls) dumber.

MTV died with the evolution of TRL. Even though it showed music videos, it slowly began showing shorter clips of the video and doing more segments. Soon MTV had no more music videos and much more annoying shit that rhymes with The Pills.

Agreed.

For me, shows like "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" and of course the not playing videos, but there are 2 channels that play videos all day long.

I disagree. I hate music videos becasue they are usually boring regardless of the genre. MTV gave us Jackass, Wildboyz, and Viva La Bam, and Wonder Showzen. Has anyone actually seen Wonder Showen?
Thats a really good point too. And yes I have seen Wonder Showzen, one of the creepiest and funniest shows.

Yeah, that is true. I never thought of that. Tons of really funny shows came from that channel.

Maroon 5 is not that watered down. They're a legit rock/funk band that makes good songs.
And show me an Underoath video on MTV.

did they put the seasons on DVD? that would be worth buying.

This is an easy one...If they just played music on it instead of all that other shit, it would be great. Even shows like Bevis and Butthead would work, because they are still music related shows

I went with the internet, my reason being is that the more people have used the internet, if they want to look at videos by said band, then they can just search for it without waiting around for it to show up. I remember back in 2001-2002, my cousin and I would watch MTV2 all of the time, for the reason that we would catch some pretty cool videos. But now, if we want to watch a specific video by a band, all it takes is a few keystrokes and you're there.

I'm old. I remember when MTV was great. Even the early non-music shows still had a strong music element to them... Remote Control had a lot of questions about music, Beavis and Butthead watched videos, The Real World had a killer soundtrack of up-and-coming bands, etc... I don't know what happened, but it's not even remotely worth watching today. I'll agree with the people who said reality shows and hip hop, because those two things kinda shifted the paradigm away from what it once was, made them a ton of money, and things were never the same again. Sad.

MTV was pretty hit or miss, with a lot of miss. They had Rob & Big, Jackass, Viva La Bam, etc which were all great. Then on the flip side, you also had the Hills, Laguna Beach, My Super Sweet 16, etc. But ultimately, they had far too many shitty shows.

i could live without those shows, given it's just a bunch of bored people making asses of themselves for money. i guess it's cool if you don't see or know anyone doing the same stupid stuff.

however, they gave us shows like Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Aeon Flux, and The Oddity or whatever it's called. As well as Celebrity Deathmatch and Liquid Television. They had a few good non-music video shows, but after The Real World and Road Rules started, it was pretty much all downhill from there.

MTV moved away from music long before music moved away from MTV.

Knocked it right out of the park.

MTV should play live concerts everynight, once a week it should be unpluged
all shows should be music related
Music videos at least 8hrs a day
bring back that show were you voted on the videos online right before they play (I dont remember what it was called)
they also need to find away to link an online community with what they play

It was suicide

it killed itself? Wow, I totally disagree here.

There's nothing about their programming that would show its popularity should neccesarily decrease. In fact...the Hills, Laguna, Tilla Tequilla, Real World challenges...are all still extremely popular shows. If anything, the music video shows are the ones that are losing ratings and credibility.

I voted for youtube/internet personally. Why would I watch a show with the top music videos that people voted for....when I can just go on-line and watch any music video I want, at any time.

Plus...lack of genre, should be on this list. MTV THRIVED during the "rock era" and "Pop era" of the 90s and early 00s. In the early 90s, the nirvana/soundgarden/alternative phase was universally popular, and MTV was the place to go to for it. MTV would nurture this genre with acoustic performances, matt pinfield, and plenty of other rock related events. Then there was the pop blow-up with the boy bands and britney, which was universally loved by teenage girls.....and where could these teenage girls go to finger themselves (sorry thats gross) to this stuff.. TRL. boom! And from TRL, came other shows to nurture to teenage girls...

Now pop music is dead (for the most part), rock/alternative/krock music is dead....and alll we're left in terms of mainstream is hop hop and linkin park and paramore. So there's no music basis for the channel anymore....so they're just trying to concentrate on the high school teen market, which I think they're doing a good job of accomplishing. Plus, girls are going to eventually get smarter and start to realize that shows like the HIlls and Real World are retarded.

no way....its popularity was stronger than ever in the 98-03 years...it wasnt until boy bands died and the internet got extremely popular, when ratings started to decline.

eh i dunno, to be honest i dont really care enough about MTV to talk about the topic. All i know is I used to watch it back in the day with carson daly TRL and music videos...now i use it to watch Made & True Life. I'd be more pissed about mtv changing if i didnt have access to the internet for music news/videos/blogs, but since i do i dont care that it has gone down the shiitter.

I just think before myspace/youtube everyone had no other choice but to watch & rely on mtv for music. All they cover now is hip hop and other stuff that doesn't interest me, so i prefer to go on various music sites instead. If mtv still aired decent music videos and covered bands that I like, i would watch that over videos on the internet...but they dont, so for now ill stick to absolutepunk.
