View Full Version : I don't get Razia's Shadow.

Am I the only one who wasn't blown away by this album?

When I heard that it was a musical, I first thought ...Is a Real Boy by Say Anything. I didn't know I was going to be listening to a MySpace version of Phantom of the Opera. Seriously, it's a grand gesture, and a pretty great musical accomplishment by a relatively unknown guy (and a bazillion guest artists), but its absolutely NOT punk, and is quite frankly just not at all what I like to listen to. I'll be surprised if I ever listen to it again.

Similar to my feelings for almost anything by The Dear Hunter, I guess. I just don't get it, or how this kind of music is even remotely tethered in with rock/punk/emo/prog/whatever.

Before I opened this thread, I thought about recommending you The Dear Hunter's albums over Razia's Shadow, then I got the part where you mentioned them, haha.

You might want to let it grow on you. Nearly all of my favorite albums did not click with me until maybe months after I first listened to them.

i really like this album. I listened to it with a complete open mind, knowing full well it was a musical and never have previously listened to Forgive Durden nor musicals. I listened to it like 5 times trying to figure out characters and the overall concept of the story. Then I found myself really listening to thinking about what i was listening to, which rarely happens anymore. Once I got the whole thing down, it became overwhelmingly accepted into my playlist cycle. I guess what I am saying is, even if this isn't "punk" you should give it a good chance and listen to it a couple times with an open mind and see if you still think it sucks pubes. Which is likely.

The story isn't very good, so the whole album just kind of blows. It depends too much on the characters. People keep saying that the characters make the album, which angers me because the characters make it seem like a huge sham, kind of like IDOTG, except this is to a much higher extent. All around over-hyped release, which is not something I'm really shocked about.

A few things:

1) I don't typically like punk music, in general. I'm honestly more of a rock/prog/emo fan. I just made that comment because this site is called absolutepunk.net, and I'm surprised that this many "punk" fans are actually into this overblown classical music stuff.

2) I'll probably give it another listen. But I did buy the last album by The Dear Hunter, and was hugely disappointed. In fact, it annoys me immensely.

3) Kid B, don't even compare this kind of music to IDOTG. That album was nowhere near a sham, and it doesn't even come close to the pretention of an album like this.

Dude you're 23. It would be weird if you did like this kind of music.

I'm not really sure which side you're taking, then. Did you like this album? Did you not? Almost everyone on this site did. I didn't.

saying almost everyone liked it is not true

It's called absolutepunk, but as Jason Tate said in a recent interview, he wishes he would have named it absolutemusic because obviously the site covers far more than punk music (that wouldn't bring very many viewers would it?). The people that like this may be punk fans, but my bet is that people who like pop-punk or other derivations of emo enjoy this album more.

The Dear Hunter is sophsticated, but it is good that you are willing to admit that it didn't do anything for you. I think people on here sometimes feel bad when things like this album or The Dark Knight get so hyped by the staff and then don't turn out to be that great.

Good points. I didn't HATE The Dear Hunter album, I just can't imagine listening to that kind of music more than like twice a year. It felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of a movie that doesn't exist, and I felt that same about Razia's Shadow.

I thought Razia's Shadow was alright, but I have no idea what the hell it's about. I'm like the worst person at deciphering lyrics.

razia's shadow is just plain boring to me. the dear hunter is lame, which is aggravating because deerhunter is great and they get mixed up far too easily. both of these names are good at making boring pop music yet they think that making their music a grand production will be anywhere close to good. they're wrong.
