View Full Version : What classic album can you not appreciate?

stand_tall

We all know those albums, the ones that everyone says is the classic work by a band, but for whatever reason you cannot appreciate. Whenever you say you're not a fan, you catch some flack for it. Maybe you haven't listened to it enough, or maybe you gave it a couple of spins but decided you like one of the other albums better. What is that album for you?

For me that album is Clarity by Jimmy Eat World. It's not that I dislike the album, but it seems like whenever I feel like listening to JEW I pick Bleed American or Futures.

Any thoughts?

If modern classics are included;
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Homogenic - Bjork
YHF - Wilco (well, I like it, but it seems so overrated that I kill myself listening to it because I wish so much that I could get out of it what so many people do)

I did not like the album the first time I listened to it but then I saw the movie. The film successfully got me to appreciate the album.

For me, NMH is all about the imagery he uses when he goes into Anne Frank mode. It's really amazing.

For me, I've tried my hardest to get into The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd but I'm just not feeling it.

Paranoid Android, Karma Police, and Let Down are very good tracks. The rest of the album is OK (pun intended) but I personally don't think it's one of the best albums ever created of all time.

I'd have to go with The Sex Pistols.

Since when is Clarity or Deja Entendu remotely classic?

I was speaking mostly in respect to the current music scene, or the modern classics. Clarity is the definitive JEW album for many people. Same thing with Deja for Brand New.

Really. The Sex Pistols were great. I mean, how many bands can continue to tour for 30 years on 1 album?

The Pistols broke up in 1978 and didn't reunite until 1996, and ever since then, it's been off and on.

Way to try and sound like you know what you're talking about, though.

Oh hahaha I'm sure you will someday...TBH that record is the hardest to get into out of his stuff for me too, but it is also the most beautifully simple. You should try Shepherds Dog instead, it's has much more going on in it, more instruments, more upbeat, that kind of thing.

I simply don't understand at all. If you're talking about albums much older than those, then I don't really have an answer because for the most part I understand why those older artists are liked.. even Pink Floyd.

Oh, and Radiohead's Kid A.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I don't understand Graceland by Paul Simon. I know it's almost unanimously loved, and Simon and Garfunkel are one of my favorite bands, but Graceland really does nothing for me... the only way I can describe it is it sounds almost too.. "80s" for my taste.

"Classic" eh? Okay.....

Sgt. Pepper's - probably my least favorite Beatles album. That's still saying a lot because it's better than 95% of recorded music... but it's definitely not worth the hype it gets. Sure it was influential, but all you have to do is go a year forward or a year backward in their discography to hear something way better.

Just about all Bruce Springsteen except Born To Run and Nebraska. There, I said it.

Most Rolling Stones albums. I love their singles, Let It Bleed, and Exile On Main Street, and most of Sticky Fingers. Everything else seems like a few good tracks and a ton of boring and repetitive filler.

And to the people who said Dark Side of the Moon... I can relate. I like it, but it's definitely not their best, they have at least 5 other albums I'd rather listen to. But the album I fuckin' can't stand is The Wall. What a bloated piece of shit.

Pink Floyd really just takes some time, then it really clicks. Well, that's at least what it did for me. While your music taste keeps growing and expanding, keep coming back to it and try it out. I do that with "classic" artists or albums, and sooner or later i'll appreciate it and find out why it's good, or why it's important or etc.
