I read this story on CNN, and because I found it particularly horrifying, I thought I should share it...

"We were on the way to school when two men on motorbikes stopped next to us. One of them threw acid on my sister's face. I tried to help her, and then they threw acid on me, too," Latefa, 16, told the Qatar-based satellite network.

Wow, I had never heard of this before...the fact that it's apparently common is more than disturbing. Being a Chemistry major, I know how corrosive this stuff is...it's really unbelievable.

Unfortunately a "family's honor" is more important to some than the life and beauty of their daughters.

edit: I don't think it's too common in the Arab world as it is east of that region.

ya that was a mistake on my part, I ment Muslim world, but even that's a little misleading or broad.
