Please defend this:
President-elect Barack Obama's newly appointed chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, served on the board of directors of the federal mortgage firm Freddie Mac at a time when scandal was brewing at the troubled agency and the board failed to spot "red flags," according to government reports reviewed by ABCNews.com.
According to a complaint later filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Freddie Mac, known formally as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, misreported profits by billions of dollars in order to deceive investors between the years 2000 and 2002.
Emanuel was not named in the SEC complaint but the entire board was later accused by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) (click here to read) of having "failed in its duty to follow up on matters brought to its attention."
Seems Emanuel may have a little problem with paying his taxes.
Hmmm.
President Elect Obama - himself a connected, Chicago insider who has benefited from questionable land deals - may find it difficult to explain why his very own Chicago-based chief of staff doesn't pay property taxes like the "little guy" he claims to represent. Or perhaps allowing his wealthy friends to avoid taxes is part of Obama's trickle down redistribution economics. It's certainly the kind of "change" we Illinoisans can believe in...since we're quite familiar with it here in the federal indictment land of Daley, Blagojevich, Madigan, Jones, Cellini, Rezko, etc., etc.
***I cannot wait to read about what "I don't understand" and how he "needs someone who..." and on and on and on...

ABCNEWS ARTICLE
Emanuel was named to the Freddie Mac board by President Bill Clinton in 2000 and resigned his position when he ran for Congress in May, 2001.
Emanuel was not named in the SEC complaint.
Not. An. Issue.

If by "benefited from questionable land deals" you mean got the best mortgage rate he could, a rate equivalent to what someone else in Chicago earning an equivalent family salary would have gotten (how many of the other 99 Senators even have a mortgage?), and paying below the asking price but still beating out a lower, second offer on the same home from a different family, then sure, he "benefited" from being a smart shopper. Eek. Far be it from anyone to expect the guy to try and make a good offer (http://archpundit.com/blog/2008/01/24/rezko-primer-vi-house-purchase/) while buying a new house during a buyer's market from a seller who just wanted to get rid of the house so they could move to their new place.
And if by "Chicago-based chief of staff doesn't pay property taxes" you mean Rahm Emanuel who actually pays about double in property taxes compared to what his neighbors pay (http://progressillinois.com/2008/11/07/rahm-emanuel-property-taxes) then sure, I suppose paying $13,000 in property taxes is equal to "doesn't pay property taxes". ;-)
Comeback Kid, you need to get your facts straight. All this information is publicly available for goodness sake. You just have to have an interest in telling the truth.

Any article that continues to propagate the largely debunked "land deal" situation with Obama is immediately suspect. The text itself clears Rahm of any wrong doing in regard to the board itself. And for the record, being on a "board" can be highly ceremonial. I sit on a few "boards" - and I do next to nothing on a few of them.
I see no evidence of him not paying his taxes. If that is true - seems easy enough to pay them.

Watch out Tate, we don't need probable cause or proving things beyond reasonable doubt anymore! Guilt by association is the new black. Might wanna look into what kinda shady characters you're sitting on a board with....

No shit. The point here is Obama is not the second coming of Jesus Christ, but is in fact a dirty, untrustworthy politician like the rest. That being the case, those of you who believe any change is on its way should reconsider holding your breath.
As far as guilty by association is concerned: his chief of staff is questionable at best, so why not choose someone else? It just casts a larger shadow of doubt on his intentions.
Let's face it, we all know once Obama settles in to his office he will slip towards the middle like everyone else.
And when it happens I will gladly say, "I told you so."
Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats will bring any change that is worth a shit.
