What would everyone say is the best band since 2000?

I'd have to say either Foo Fighters or The Killers.

Definitely neither of those bands.

I don't know, what are we counting it as, best American band this decade in terms of releases regardless if the band was formed or had releases in other decades, I mean OP did say Dave Grohl project and one can argue he had a better career in the 90s even though I think he is fucking terrible and his music is horrible but...

with that said, and counting that factor, best American band of this decade would no doubt be:

Neurosis.

BUT

if we had to pick an American band started within the decade with just releases in the decade then...

I'd probably say one of:

The White Stripes
Tom Waits
The Mars Volta
Wilco

I'm not into the first and third of those but they are my picks based on contribution to/impact on music in the 00's, reception both critical and popular and my own personal bias.

That would be my pick. While I'm not really a White Stripes fan, they've managed both commercial and critical success.

yeah, fall out boy is awesome for what they are but they're a little bit too main stream in my eyes. plus i would prefer a band who has more depth and experience, you know?

that's what i suggested, JEW and saves the day. jimmy eat world is just so solid and experienced and the 00's were really their time.

On the strength of Boxer and its b-sides, along with relatively decent releases in Alligator, Sad Songs, and the Cherry Tree EP. That puts them about on par with Wilco who put out YHF in addition to the disappointing A Ghost Is Born and Sky Blue Sky. Beam easily takes the cake if his music is permitted.

IWasaCamera
11/14/08, 06:00 PM
Sky Blue Sky and A Ghost is Born are way better than Alligator and Sad Songs.
Nope.

IWasaCamera
11/14/08, 06:08 PM
I can't think of any enjoyable songs from either of those but Sky Blue Sky has quite a few as does A Ghost is Born.
Sky Blue Sky was probably the biggest letdown of 2007 for me. A Ghost Is Born is filled with hits and misses. Same can be said for Alligator and Sad Songs, at least on my end.

Come to think of it, I'll throw My Morning Jacket into the mix as well.

yeah, they are highly successful and have that "image" but at the end of the day, They really aren't that talented. when i think of a best band, the band has to be extremely talented musically. but maybe i'm just a stickler for technical musicianship.

11/15/08, 04:57 PM
Based on personal bias Tool but the fact they have only two releases this decade is an issue. The White Stripes though I don't really like them are a good shout based on all the factors combined and the amount of releases of pretty consistent quality it seems. If they can squeeze out a good fourth album The Strokes would be there or thereabouts, certainly off the first half of the decade.

Iron & Wine, MGMT or My Morning Jacket.
In terms of a single release, I'd say MGMT's Oracular Spectacular, and in terms of live show MMJ are actually the single best live band ever, so they take the cake.

I could see it. White Stripes are good, they're just not...amazing. I think I'd say they're one of the better but not the best American bands.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot's a good enough album that if Creed had put it out I'd almost give best band of the decade to them. Almost.

And the Mars Volta. For De-Loused in the Comatorium... and Frances the Mute... and to a lesser extent for the Bedlam in Goliath... unbelievable. They're probably my pick.

There will never be another "Best Band of the (decade)" because Music isn't like it used to be. EVERYONE knew Led Zepplin and ACDC and the Beatles, but there's just so much music now that there isn't a band where everyone knows and loves everything they put out. It's sad, and it makes me wonder what our oldies stations will be like...

In all of music history, there have probably only been three or four bands that everyone knows and loves everything they put out (and Led Zepplin and ACDC aren't two of them). I think to look for a standard like that is sort of ridiculous. There could eventually be another one but it's not fair to hold bands to that standard.

With any luck they'll just play tons of Green Day, Disturbed, Jack Johnson, and Korn. Nothing else matters really.

Even if the musically playing field has been leveled, it doesn't mean that one band or a few bands aren't above the others.

I agree. Back when the Beatles, Beach Boys, and even up to early Metallica were getting big, they were what people heard. You turned on the radio or TV and were faced with just a few big bands. Now, there are so many different bands that get attention and etc that I don't see another one rising up the fame that say, The Beatles or Metallica did.

I assumed it was a combination of quality and prominence, of course, that's what I gathered from reading posts and not from the initial poster.

If that's the case, prominence and quality, The National, Of Montreal, Spoon, Wilco, The White Stripes and, to a lesser extent, The Strokes would all qualify, I imagine.

If we're merely commenting on quality, a case could be made for The National and Wilco, as well as The Blood Brothers (2 good albums, 1 great album, 1 decent album) and Liars (2 great albums, 1 good album, 1 mediocre album).

Ultimately, I find myself trying to decide between Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Boxer, ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn and Drum's Not Dead.
I took "best" simply as a barometer of quality. If we're to include how "big" the bands are as well, I suppose Wilco or Spoon would take it over The National or Iron & Wine. At that point though, another qualifier such as "important" seems more fitting.

I don't trust moving pictures.

Tore it apart? I mean, it has some contrived elements, but it was kinda enjoyable. Check this noise out:

Frontier(s) -- Part of the New French Extreme movement of the last decade or so. It's vile, nihilistic and puke-inducing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_I3zv997qg

Lost Highway -- It's my favorite, and most neo-noirish David Lynch film. This scene will chill you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZLQW2qr5Hs

Man Bites Dog -- Bleakly funny dark comedy about a jovial serial killer and the film crew that follows him. It anticipates the voyeuristic reality television craze by a decade and provides a commentary on the genre that holds up nearly twenty years later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcPhaieTg4o

Black Dynamite -- A hilarious parody of the campy blaxploitation films of the '70s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-wqmnJrOFM

Doubt -- A very Mamet-esque film entirely dependent on dialog/exposition/emoting to progress the plot. It's a "how-to" guide/clinic in acting and it's adapted from a brilliant play. It may be my favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman performance.

Black Dynamite and Man Bites Dog are available for instant streaming on Netflix (endorsement deal, ca-ching), which is a godsend if you're a poor, recently unemployed college student on summer break with absolutely nothing to do...or Asian.

This thread is hilarious. So far I have seen the mention of shitty emo-pop-punk bands like Fall Out Boy...........lol. Brand New had one mediocre album, Broken Social Scene is just that........scene garbage. Gaslight Anthem......puke. Thrice and Thursday both screamo trash. A lot of people bashing Creed and Foos oh and BTW Canada is America jr...........This site should change it's name to ABSOLUTETWATWAD because that is what most of you trolls are around here.

How does one be 'black,' Andrea?!

I hate everyone.

I was more talking about watching movies with my friends tonight, and they like, you know, Tropic Thunder type stuff. Anyway, thank you for scaring the fuck out of me with those clips. I saw some of the first two and will not be able to watch the rest. My mind is a cowardly one :-(

Mean Girls is rad. I love that movie (sincerely).

What's the movie where Nicole Kidman dates a boy she's convinced is her resurrected son? That one's hilariously bad (Google says "Birth").

Oh, and Return of the Living Dead is the ultimate "friends are over, it's 1 am, we need something deliciously campy." It's not actually scary, it's incredibly funny and it has a great soundtrack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wylpeAXYcBQ

Ha, Mean Girls is always a classic, though I don't think I've ever watched it once through undistractedly. I'll see what I can do with these.

I remembered Rick and Dom mentioning Youth in Revolt was hilarious, but it seemed kind of lame. Plus, it's Michael Cera, with his brilliantly prolific and versatile acting.

Nothing Michael Cera's stared in has remotely appealed to me (cool guy alert), so I stay away. I (like everyone) watched Juno. Between the obnoxiously cloy dialog and the awful acting, I wanted to set myself on fire (no hyperbole...a little hyperbole). Diablo Cody can suck it. I'm stoked for Scott Pilgrim as a longtime fan of the series, so I hope he doesn't fuck it up (not that the character of Scott demands range).

Also, white people. White? People.

I hope you caught my sarcasm, which you probably did. Anyway, he was sort of a main character in Arrested Development, banana stands and all, so I don't know if you'd count that. Finally someone who agrees with me about Juno! Is it just me, or did Juno have some absolutely obnoxiously 'hip' lingo...and yeah, you nailed it, the whole movie was just obnoxious. I don't understand what people were raving about. Diablo Cody also did Jennifer's Body, right? Oh man.

Fuck paid. Get bitches.

Dude, I've been an AD fan for years, but he's part of an ensemble cast of experienced comedic actors. He just acted unassuming and naive, which is relatively easy, and it worked. Everything else he's done in film just doesn't appeal to me. Juno also suffers from a complete lack of likeable characters. The protagonist is so detached and hides behind her shield of irony that she never allows for any vulnerability. The character arc eventually makes her more "real" and all, but it's not engaging to me. Swear to blog! Oh, and I saw the first ten minutes of Superbad and my friends and I got bored and walked into the screening next to us. Transformers was playing. It was awesome. Giant robots hitting each other is a formula to cinematic success.

Its pretty okay. Its like you wont regret watching it when its over, but you'll probably never think nor talk about it at anytime in the future.
