View Full Version : the most obviously 'dated' flicks from the 90's

I remember thinking years back how dated 80's movies seemed, and how movies from the 90's wouldnt be the same.....and clearly I was wrong lol, so list the movies that truely wreak of the 90's

starting off would be any teen/comedy obviously, since the whole point is to be "in the now" so Empire Records, Clueless, Can't Harldy Wait, etc

Mortal Kombat; the really cheap cgi and that terrible 90's techno/industrial music that you just can't help but love because of your fond memories of the movie lol

Hackers; Isn't that movie supposed to take place around now? or maybe even a few years ago, which yes society has become more gadgety, but not like that movie envisioned, which is always funny about movies that take place in the "not too distant future"....also more dated techno, which it think it actually had some of the same music from Mortal Kombat lol

Dumb & Dumber; a classic, but dated none the less

Twister; hahahaha

i'm done thinking for now

You are right with most of them, but that movie is still really really solid.

Yeah I think Dumb and Dumber is just as relevant today, haha.

I've had these same thoughts about 90's pop culture. I remember in the late 90s, early 00's I would look back on the 80's and think about how hilarious the trends were. And now the same is happening for the 90's.

Even just last night I was watching Seinfeld (the one where Jerry has to watch the guy's Dog all week) and I think that ep is from 1991. And I was thinking, holy shit...how is this seinfeld episode almost 20 years old? What the fuck?

any of the big budget 90's disaster movies are dated as hell. the cgi looks horrible in most of them. Jurassic park is pretty much the only one that stood the test of time

I've been noticing this a lot lately but mostly with comedies. There's Something About Mary is one that I remember thinking was hilarious but now its just dated. Still funny though, but I guess what I'm saying is that comedies are funnier now. The bar has been raised for the most part and those movies that people thought were so funny can't hold a candle to how comedies are now.

The Simpsons, however, are timeless.

Yea, Seinfeld is my fav. show but I feel like it's sooo old.

Now Saved by the Bell! That show makes the 90's seem like a distant culture. From the high-rise, tight pants, to the tucked in shirts, to the goofy hair. Even when Kelly wears a bathing suit, I sometimes cringe at how awkward it looks.

Now, on a more important note, we've all heard about" 80's boobs." Has anyone noticed a difference in 90's boobs from today? (I'm guessin implants)

amen to that, i've always considered Jurassic Park to be arguably the best special effects film ever, I mean even now some of the cgi is dated, such as the first shot of the bracheosaur, altogather it is still extremely belivable, I was like 9 when it came out and I swear that first trex scene, EVERYONE was freaking out in the theater lol, i can't recall another movie that had the audience riled up like that

to me where cgi creatures were probably pulled off best in the 90's were for stuff like Mars Attacks and MIB which had an intentional cartoonish quality, but pretty much anything that ILM did(ex. Dragonheart) even if it looks really fake now, you at least believe in the character like e.t. or yoda, tho e.t. still looks awsome to me. Where ILM really let the bar sink was Jar Jar it doesnt matter if the fx were good or bad, it was a terrible comic relief that got way too much screen time lol

sadly the 90's really didnt have alot of fantasy/sci-fi flicks like the 80's did, which is why i was so happy around 01-02 cause we finally started getting a slew of those again, which thinking of, I saw The Last Starfighter for the first time in forever the other day, that movie still rules! lol

Yeah dude I love Boy Meets World.

Did you know that they aren't releasing any season on DVD after the first 3 that have already been released because they didn't sell well? Pisses me off. And it's obvious that they didn't sell that well...the 2nd half of the series (or basically high school and up) was so much better. It was like 2 different shows but with the same cast.

They're dumb for not releasing the best seasons. Those were the money makers. I'm hoping it goes back into syndication on a popular channel like Nick at Nite.

You're welcome. I don't know when they'll come out but I'll be getting them right away, that's for sure. Right now I have every season on DVD because I bought them from a website where they record every episode off the Disney channel and then they convert it. So that tides me over until I get the real thing with the extra features I'm looking for. It's fun to hear the grown up cast's commentary.

Yeah, I really enjoy the commentary they have on the first few seasons. It's kind of hilarious when they have Matthew Lawrence show up on a commentary with the whole gang because he didn't even appear in the show until the fifth season. There's a specific episode with a commentary in the first few seasons where one of the guys says to Lawrence, "Hey Matt, remember this episode?" or "Hey Matt, isn't that you right there?" and you can always hear him muttering a response in the background. I like that they all still seem to get along so well.

They did have great on screen chemistry so it's cool to know they're like family.

Irrelevant sidenote: My gf's name is Rachael, so sometimes to bug her I yell her name out like Eric would yell Rachel's name out, haha. It always annoys her.

It does seem like they're still family when you look through the special features. I imagine you'd have to be after growing up together like that. I'd love to be a part of something similar.

On the second date with my girlfriend, I remember sitting in her car while she ran inside the gas station to go pay. As I sat there waiting, I began to scroll through her iPod (she told me to pick something out to play) and stopped when I came upon something that grabbed my interest. As she got back in the car, she asked, "did you find something?" I sat there with an awkward grin on my face for a moment before she turned to look at me and finally asked, "what?" I pressed play and that familiar tune began blasting through the stereo speakers:

dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun DUN dun,
dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun,
dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun DUN dun,
MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!

I was in love.
