Seeing that Fall Out Boy sold only 4 mill of FUTCT and Blink sold 12 million of Enema says a lot about the current state of music. That Fall Out Boy album felt HUGE when the singles started hitting. I know that Enema has been out a lot longer but still.

Plus, im finding out these numbers as I look them up....there's no site that lists the top selling "pop punk" albums, so I'm just going year by year from billboards and trying to find "pop-punk" bands.

enema of the state is a classic album, too. cork tree will never reach the level of enema, especially since it's god awful.

Deja Entendu went Gold, which, as far as I know, is huge (if not the hugest) for an indie label release.
Chromefox
11/14/08, 11:29 AM
lol what??
Smash by The Offspring is the best selling record of all time on an indie label and has sold 14 million copies. Hence "as far as I know". Now I know better. Problem solved.
Chromefox
11/14/08, 11:42 AM
You also know you were a long long way off. Hundreds of albums have sold better than Deja on an indie label.
Even within this scene Hawthorne Heights and Taking Back Sunday have outsold Deja easilly on indie releases. I was considering that they're still not mainstream, and sort of putting aside bands who'd made it mainstream, then sold loads of a previous release simply due to current popularity.
I don't really listen to either band, so I wouldn't know their figures. I do know though, that Hawthorne Heights is crap and that for the sake of taste should not be on any top selling list.

Is it only albums that sold well?
Cause if not I'd say factor in New Found Glory's Sticks and Stones as well as The Starting Line's Say It Like You Mean It.
If sales alone include Blink's Take off and Green Day's Dookie, plus I think My Chem's Three Cheers sold more.
thiswokendream
11/14/08, 01:45 PM
The first two went gold meaning they sold between 500,000 and 1,000,000 albums.
Yeah I was thinking that In Love and Death sold really well. I just remember I couldn't leave the house without hearing a song by The Used somewhere.

Some of the bands listed aren't "pop punk" in the traditional sense but they are still I guess you could say part of the pop-rock music that helped bring most of the music we listen to into the mainstream. So I don't mind that they are listed. But I am definitely focusing more on the pop-punk bands such as Blink 182, Green Day, Sum41 NFG, and GC.

the word emo is even more annoying though. its never been accepted by any band and it hasnt been properly used since like fucking 1991, so really why doesnt the mainstream just let it go. and why dont people stop conforming to a melodramatic persona to fit their melodramatic music and then expect people to respect them. and why dont the other people stop ostracizing the idea of emotionally charged music since practically all music is driven by feeling, and depression is not the only fucking feeling in the world

you know in my own little happy utopia perception, the social trend would have never even started if people realized, during my toddler years, that 1) fugazi was not emo, it was an experimental offshoot of emo and 2) even if they were, just because a band cites them as an influence doesnt automatically give them the same genre name if the music doesnt sound anything like it

its sad. the friends who inspired me to start making my own music when i was 13, ended up attaching themselves to that dress style a couple years later. now they're in their early 20s and still dressed that way. although they dont follow the personality stereotypes which is a very good thing.
