I agree, I managed to find a copy of it today at Best Buy (The only store i've found in Cincinnati that actually fuckin' carries it.) and the first thing that struck me in the car was how cool the artwork was. Love the direction they went with it.

It's honestly sooo hard to compare. I mean, you're comparing a debut record from a band that's been fully together for less than two years to a more veteran record. Two totally different styles of production and totally different sounds. Although I am a much much bigger TREOS fan, I honestly don't think I can bring myself to vote on one or the other in a direct comparison like this.

I got the TREOS album last night and I was pretty let down. Every song sounds exactly the same. It reminds me of Thrice with some MIDI files thrown in.
Gatsby on the other hand is the most innovative band that has come around in a long time. There's no comparison between GAD and TREOS. This vote should've been Gatsby vs. Crap.

TREOS didn't write "songs"... the whole album is intended to be one continuous wave of sound, without any breaks. They wrote the album as a whole, not as 13 seperate wholes thrown together... which I feel, is how an album should be written. So when you say "all of the songs sound the same", to me, it comes off as "the band did an awesome job of keeping this 70-minute track consistent". That's why some of the same melodies and lyrics were used and mashed up in more than one track, bc they didnt say "well, we used this melody in the last song we cant use it again".. they said "we're going to use this melody on this album and we won't use it on another one." I mean, the album is EXTREMELY effect/instrumental oriented, and if you're not focused or okay with hearing 5 minutes of straight instrumental beauty and no vocals... this album isn't for you. It's not a fucking MTV/Fuse/Mainstream typical sounding album at all and it's a breath of fresh air.

wow... did you just use "thrice with some midi files thrown in" as an insult... what an idiot :headshake
and yes, as frank so eloquently put it, the album is designed to be listened to as a whole... i know all you people who listen to Fall Out Boy and the Starting Line don't have the patience for that, but dont blast an album because of your own ADD.

I voted earlier but forgot to comment. I prefer TREOS, far and away. I think they've fully realized and perfected this sound they have in their opening shot out the gate. However, they aren't more innovative than the Gatsby's. Volcano's one of the more innovative pieces of work i've heard in a very, very long while. That's not to say TREOS aren't because i'm fuckin' in love with their use of digital effects, but when it comes to innovation I can't not give the nod to GAD.
I still vote TREOS though, and if i'm rating both.
Gatsby's - 9.1/10, I wrote a review on this for another site. The numerical rating was hard to come up with, but I felt it was a bit better than a 9. I wasn't into a couple tracks, and I also think it was far too short. I found myself left wanting more because it was as amazing as it was for the 33 or so minutes that they gave us. Still a fantastic album with such a technically achieved sound that it gets a 9 just on the strength of how complex it is.
TREOS - 10/10, and I rarely hand out tens. I think this album is literally without any sort of a flaw or shortcoming.

I'm not as into Volcano as you are though, so it'll be a bit of a different result.
I find myself going back to Volcano again and again just because it seems like each time I listen there's something that I missed, because there's so much detail and complexity to every track on it. I don't think it's gonna have amazing staying power with me though.

you are comparing a band that has been togeteher for 3 albums and a band that completely changed their sound maybe a little over a year ago. TREOS had the balls to put together an album that was in the same key, was basically an hour and 10 minute song and they pulled it off quite well. the only downfalls to that album is the ending to flee the factory with the piano and the extended version to the war of all against all. besides that every song is something i could listen to over and over. i am not impressed with gatsby's new album.

Is it? Both of these cds are so good, but their lengths are both somewhat unique. GAD is far under the average CD length, and TREOS is far above. It basically came down to, I had to judge something, and the lengths really stood out in my mind. TREOS wrote twice the material as far as I'm concerned.

What I personally feel would be a more fair comparison... would be comparing TREOS 3rd record, to Gatsby's Volcano. This is their DEBUT and they've been together for a little over a year... the fact that they can even be in the running with Gatsby's is almost insulting to them and it says A LOT. As for as innovation goes, I think TREOS wrote twice as much material, I personally feel more complete after hearing the record, and I feel like I actually heard a whole album. The lyrics, the wacky digital effects, the length of the songs and the elaborate outros to every song all put this way on top for me. I also think the 3-vocalists set them far apart, as well as the very instrumental oriented breakdowns and transitions. To me, Gatsby's has weird song structure... and that's about it (unless you consider the short songs innovative, which i think is absurd). No weird instruments or unique parts in the songs, just straight forward rock without structure, which isn't a bad thing at all, just saying though.

I think people are shortchanging Gatsby's for writing a short album, which is ridiculous. They chose to absolutely perfect 33 minutes instead of banging out 50 minutes of material that wasn't as good or unified. GAD spent over 3 months recording Volcano, and they did so much subtle stuff with the production...Length is just not something you can weigh albums with.
and frank, you really really really need to listen to Volcano again, because they used tons of weird instruments....like claves, bongos, etc...especially in percussion, it's ridiculous. Casey Bates got a hold of a latin percussion set with like 15 different things in it or something and used all of them. See "A Mind of Metal and Wheels" and "Badlands"
im not gonna lie, im not nuts over either. But I think GAD is more original, something different. TREOS is good in the sense of its a safe album. Its nothing different. Ive decided they sound like the bastard sons of Story of the Year and This Providence. Both bands whoms I love, just TREOS is nothing new.

Ohh yeah, I know from a percussion sense, they have some wakcy shit, but to be honest, I just didn't even think to touch upon that because percussion is something that doesn't stand out as much as an oboe or a french horn or some shit. hahaha.

Oh, I'm sorry dude, I honestly didn't mean to come across as like...demeaning or anything. I totally respect your opinion, I'm just curious as to why you find them boring when some of those other bands are far more structured and basic. I just think Gatsby's changes tempo and styles so much that it can't be boring, but I know that a lot of people don't like that, they find it confusing and disconnected. Just wondering what your take on it was.

I know you don't want to come off like that, you love the band, you want everyone to experience that as well, I understand that. Same way I feel about Northstar. It's not that I would call it confusing or disconnected, there is something that just doesn't click for me to make me want to listen over and over again. I'm listening to Badlands right now, and it sounds pretty basic. He switches up singing styles a lot, but other then that there isn't anything that really sticks for me. I know I'm in the minority on not really being a fan, but i'm not going to like it because everyone does. I just can't get into it.

I'm very confused... not trying to be a dick, but you said something with Northstar doesn't click with you, but you have a Northstar avatar...

He's saying that he loves Northstar and wants everyone to experience it.. Just like Scott loves GAD.

I could see how people could dislike their music.
I can't understand how people could find them boring.

I love the person who gave me unsigned negative scene points because I picked TREOS by a small margin (9.1-8.5 I believe).
Any time I rate an album over 8, it's definitely one of the better albums of the year, so that says something if I gave both of these above that grade.
I do like TREOS a little more though. It's less eclectic for me, I guess.
