That Midtown song is really about 3 minutes long, with a 15 second loop that goes for another 10. Would be good for maybe 7 minutes. 13 is a fucking stretch.

Since Opeth writes lots of long songs and I love a lot of em, I figured that they'd be responsible for one of my three. It ended up being kind of a toss up between:

Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Hessian Peel
The Drapery Falls
Ghost of Perdition
Leper Affinity

Could have been any of those honestly.. but Hessian Peel's my favorite of the bunch right now. Next week my vote could change.

I haven't, they came through the area last month but it was all the way in Baltimore which is too far away for a weekday concert. I wish it would have been on the weekend.

Haha all true. If you get a chance to, definitely see them.. they're airtight live and Mikael Akerfeldt has some great dialogue with the audience.

When I saw them it was right before the release of Watershed, but of course it had leaked and me and all my friends had it. Onstage Mikael said, 'We're going to play a song off the new album, Watershed..' and people started screaming out song titles. 'Play Hessian Peel, play Porcelain Heart!' and so on.

and he laughed and said 'well I see you've all already stolen it.' But he was happy about it - 'we're just glad you literally can't wait to hear it.' Good sense of humor? Check.

Then they played Heir Apparent and it was fucking brutal and fucking epic. For lack of better words.

Aww, you only left out the ones I have really been enjoying! Burden and Hex Omega. You really can talk about every track on there, that's one of the things that make Opeth such a good band, very little time on any of their records goes to waste.

Hex Omega was a little of a dud for me at first, especially since it shares a lot of parallels w/ Porcelain Heart. However, lately, I have been loving the riffs on that song and now i think it is a great closer. Unfortunately, now it makes Porcelain Heart look bad by comparison. Oh well, just a minor glitch in the album.

Burden is amazing, it is my favorite song on the record. On Ghost Reveries they didn't do a mid tempo no growling kind of song like that, and it is a welcome return. I like the slow stuff on Ghost Reveries, but there wasn't anything like this. So good.

Yeah. Absolutely - there's no 'filler,' so to speak. It's all worthwhile.

I'll agree that Hex Omega and Burden are awesome- both better than Heir Apparent, probably, which I think is a little too heavy-handed... although the final melody is flawless, a kind of perfection which reminded me of The Drapery Falls - there's not a misplaced note at all.

The end of Burden is terrifying.

Heir Apparent is really the only pummeling song on the record, so I enjoy that it is a little heavier than it really needs to be, and the end is great anyhow.
