You, Me, and Everyone We Know – So Young, So Insane
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: November 18th, 2008

Consistency is a pretty important quality to me as a music fan. If a band is able to churn out another record that is up to par, or even better then their previous one, it definitely means a lot. Nothing is worse than listening to a highly anticipated follow-up and saying, "I was looking forward to this?" That feeling of musical-betrayal is enough for someone to write a band off for good.

When You, Me, and Everyone We Know released their first EP, Party for the Grown and Sexy, I instantly fell in love. To this day, I still listen to it as much as I did when it first came out and would probably call it one of my favorite EPs of all-time. Needless to say, hearing that they were going into the studio to record a new EP excited me to no end, but also had me a little worried. Even though I had much faith in them to come out with a collection of songs that I would love, there was still a tiny chance that I could be let down. Maybe that was just my paranoia kicking in. Regardless, the finished product, So Young, So Insane, is the complete opposite of any negative thoughts I had to what I feared it might be.

The springy opener, "I Can Get Back Up Now," shows that You, Me, and Everyone We Know haven't lost a bit of their charm or lyrical wit that they had back with the old EP. What I noticed at first was the change in Ben Liebsch's vocals and how they stray away from sounding a little like Max Bemis. Ironically enough, Bemis actually makes an appearance toward the end of the song, making the track even stronger than it already was. "Could It Be Sunstroke?" has the signature catchy chorus that YMAEWK is known best for, while "A Symptom" shows the progression they've made as it's a track that isn't entirely in-your-face pop-punk. Josh Cain makes his production prescence known in the stand-out "Sometimes We Have Too Much Fun," as I felt a Motion City Soundtrack vibe throughout the entire song. Closer "Happy Birthday" is another one of my favorites; if I didn't know it was on So Young, So Insane, I would have assumed it was a b-side from their first EP.

There's a nice feeling of relief when that anticipated album is as good as you expect. With So Young, So Insane, it just shows how You, Me, and Everyone We Know has the ability to perfectly craft pop songs without being tied to some popular label or a big budget producer. So young, so insanely talented.

I retract my previous statement that some of these songs sucked, becuase, really, a lot of them rule. I've never listened to this band before yesterday, but now I'm regretting such nearsightedness.

Why are they touring with I Set My Friends on Fire. They are so good yet they are touring with such a shitty band.

"Why are they touring with I Set My Friends on Fire. They are so good yet they are touring with such a shitty band."

Totally agree with that. I wouldn't even call that shit they make music.

Not sure if I like this ep or the first one better...but it doesn't really matter, they're both awesome!

I really like this band. For some time i have been looking for a new Pop-Punk band who i would really like since some of my favs have broken up or are on Hiatus (for example, Blink-182, Allister, The Starting Line, Mest, and Yellowcard). These guys are great can't wait till they make their first full length Album.

That is totally where I am. Pop-punk is at an all time low (pun intended) and this band is picking it back up a bit, but high eighties is pretty high. I'd go mid 70's or so, but I really did enjoy it.

where can i get some merch, or help support them? they aren't on a record label, so all the money should go in their pocket. thumbs up.

So pumped for Saturday when I see these dudes in Manchester, NH with Karate High School! Max was an upgrade on I Can Get Back Up Now, enough or saying otherwise people. That was just as much a statement about their progression as it was an upgrade to the track. "Happy Birthday" delivers the usual chills to the spine this band always provides and honestly I can't get enough of what is probably the best EP of the year!

mallyland
11/20/08, 06:30 AM
Disagree. It's not nearly as good as their first EP.

Hmmm... 87 is a bit high imo. "I Can Get Back Up Now" is a great song, but the whole thing isn't really 'sticking' for me at the moment. Maybe a few more listens, but so far: good, not spectacular.

oshyjay
11/20/08, 07:53 AM
Wow, an 87? That's pretty sweet.
I really enjoy the EP myself, first track's definitely my favorite.
If anything I think I'd disagree with giving the creativity an 8...I'd have to think it over, cause they definitely bring something new to the table by spicing up the average pop song.
I don't know.
Lyrics could have been a bit higher, I really enjoy how he says what he does, even if it is vulgar at times.
Good stuff, I'm glad it made such a high score.
My only gripe's that it's only 6 tracks.
Then again I downloaded it for free...so who am I to complain?
They should come to Austin so I can support them with my moneys. :-d

yeah i havnt stopped listening to this since i downloaded it. i wish you would have picked it apart more in your review, none the less its a great ep. i dont care much more Max Bemis' part though. i was hoping he'd have a whole verse or something. still cool though.

i guess "a symptom" is good for that it ISNT the same sound... but right in the middle, it kinda drowns me out of the mood the other songs put me in. im still on the fence about this song...

I really love this EP, especially "Sometimes We Have Too Much Fun" and the Bemis vocals on "I Can Get Back Up." I was a little afraid because of how much I loved their previous album, but this definitely lived up to my expectations. "Colorful Language" is probably the weakest track, though. I still can not even believe they aren't signed.

I take back what I said about "Colorful Language"... I've listened to it a few more times, and it's growing on me.

And I guess it's just me, but I don't see a huge difference in Ben's vocals. The only song they're that different in is "I Can Get Back Up Now" and yeah, it's very slightly less "over the top" than before, but nothing that's enough to complain about.

this album has a lot of different sounds, which i like. Ludo i can hear, FOB i can hear, also i heard a touch of TSL in one song, a bit of MCS in "Sometimes We Have Too Much Fun", and for some strange reason "I Can Get Back Up" sounds like Say Anything but i'm not sure why.....just can't put my finger on it.....

preetty miss mary mary quite contrary won't stay this pretty forever!
haha, I was just looking at this review again and remembered how awesome this album is.

...and I also REALLY REALLY want a physical copy of this. like... you have no idea how badly.

Max definitely upped the awsome on the opener
I was listening to it today, I was wondering if that was him.

Great EP! And it's free, which makes it even more awesome.

My favourite song on this is definitely "Happy Birthday" killer hook and rhythm guitar part. Add the gang vocals and you have a winner.

This EP rocks, and Max kills it TJ Lavin style on the first track.
