what separates us taking a life of a criminal, and that criminal taking someone elses life?
there is none.

Though hard to believe, it is true that it actually costs more to execute a criminal than it does to keep them in prison for life. (press etc)
I see no advantages to capital punishment.
But hey, I'm also Canadian.

I'm all about an eye for an eye. You kill someone you need to be killed. It depends on the criminal too. Some people would like to die and you would be just giving them an easy way out. If there was a way to weed them out I would make those ones stay in prison for life to suffer because that is what they didn't want.

i think it depends on the nature of the crime and all of the circumstances

There are definitely people out there who need to die, but the whole process is a huge waste of money, so I'm disinclined to choose an option.

Overall I think I am against it.
The 'eye for an eye' method seems like a good one, but, what better way to punish someone than to take away their freedom?
Taking these criminal's lives can often be exactly what they want. If you really want them to suffer, keep them in prison until they die of old age.
...of course, then there are people like Paul Bernardo who should be fucking dead (or at least put into the general population of the prison)
so, again, i am torn.

I'm against it. We need to except the fact that we are fallible as humans, and are capable of convicting the wrong person. You can't overturn the case of someone who's been executed, and because of that I am unwilling to end a person's life on the chance that they are innocent. There are crimes that do deserve the death penalty, but we simply can't be indubitably sure that we are killing the right person.

it can be viewed as a form of brutalization where society is desensitized to murder, but it can also act as a form of general deterrence...depends how you want to look at it

based on pure economics I'm against, it costs more to kill a prisoner when you include the appeal process. Plus a lot of people serving life sentences kill themselves anyways so it takes care of itself

I think life in prison is a worse fate than being put to death. especially those hard core max. security prisons. but i suppose it does something for the family of the original victim

its hard to decide because for some killers capitol punishment is was its suppose to be, a punishment, but for most its an easy way out and a relief compared to spending the rest of their lives in a little room inside their own mind...i mean these ppl are sick, killing them is just gonna help, giving them the rest of their lives inside their own head thinking.....much worse

as blunt as it sounds, honestly, i say whichever way is the most cost effective. i know that in a lot of cases, capital punishment is more expensive, but hey, sometimes it's not. i do not want my tax dollars to be taken up on those people. the money can be put to better use.

Depends on the crime. If they're a serial killer or something, then I'm for, but I'm against it for anything else.

This is rhetorical but I'm certainly not paying for an axe murdering rapist to eat and live-- especially when he didn't have the same compassion for his victims.
i'm all for the death penalty

yes, but at the same time most serial killers are literally out of their minds. they have no "room inside their own mind" to think and dwell on-- there are some people out there that are completely emotionless and spiritually dead and have no value for the lives of others. these are the kind of people that have-- IMO -- gave up their right to live. If they have the right to take someone else's life, we should all have the right to take theirs

unfortunatley, it depends on the state. if it were up to me, the whole country would have capital punishment

If we kill someone for killing someone else, we are just as much a murderer as they are, and killing them is not going to bring back the person they killed. There is no good reason for capital punishment

holy crap, close poll. while i sometimes (i.e. almost always) intially have feelings like "kill that S.O.B.", based on my personal moral and religious convictions, i feel that ending a life is murder, no matter how you cut it. even though people have many convincing arguments for why capital punishmment is justifiable, i think it should be a veeeeeeeeeeeeery last resort and the best way to go about dealing with the situation is to not have blood on your hands at all (in terms of kiling the criminal).

ask anyone who is in the family of a victim and you will get a different answer than those who are not.
Point being, perspective.

I don't think capital punishment is ever justified. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
We are one of the only countries in the world who still has capital punishment
Capital punishment costs more money than keeping someone in prison for life.

I'm havin to do a argumentative paper on this. i'm against it and i'd rather see the criminal sit in a tiny jail cell the rest of their natural life to think about what they did.

read "the life of david gale", it's really an extreme example of how flawed capital punishment can be and how radical some of its proponents are, but for about a week after i finished reading it i was vehemently against the death penalty.

Funny thing: the word "capital" as in capital of Sweden translates to the Swedish word "Huvudstad" which can be directly translated to head city. Capita=head in latin
