Bring Me The Horizon – Suicide Season
Release Date: November 18, 2008
Record Label: Epitaph
When I first saw the album artwork to Bring Me The Horizon’s Epitaph debut, Suicide Season, I rolled my eyes. The title was bad enough, and now this? By incorporating so many clichés, the Sheffield, England quintet was fitting in quite nicely with the oversaturated scene here in the States. But something weird happened while listening to the album - the realization that Bring Me The Horizon are pretty damn good with their instruments dawned on me. While their image may be ridiculous, the music is anything but.
Bring Me The Horizon is just "a dude playin’ another dude disguised as another dude;" basically their brand of metalcore takes some pointers from bands like Slipknot, Gallows, and The Devil Wears Prada and mixes them all into one cohesive noise. Suicide Season is a ten track deathtrap produced by Fredrik Nordstrom (At The Gates, Arch Enemy) in Sweden. The production is seamless and crystal clear; the riffs rip through each song and Oliver Sykes unforgiving screams screech throughout the album. For being so young, Bring Me The Horizon knows how to play their instruments, staying tight and unpredictable in each track.
Tracks like “The Comedown” and “Death Breath” are auditory bitch slaps, while “Football Season Is Over” hits like Bob Sanders, as breakdowns come from all angles to crush you. “Chelsea Smile” is reminiscent of Gallows, and “Sleep With One Eye Open” chugs along with guitar chords that sound like sledgehammers, courtesy of Lee Malia and Curtis Ward.
“The Sadness Will Never End” features guest vocals from Architects’ Sam Carter, creating a singing-scream dynamic we’ve heard countless times, while “No Need For Introductions, I’ve Read About Girls Like You On The Back of Toilet Doors” is a minute long thrash dedicated to the allegations made against Sykes claiming he urinated on a female. The eight-minute title track closes out the album with a mid-paced tempo, as cymbals and guitars crash into each other.
What brings the Suicide Season down is cliché and cheesy lyrics. A lot of allusions to death, blood, misogyny, etc. are littered throughout. And, obviously, we are not hearing anything new here with Bring Me The Horizon. They use a lot of breakdowns, a lot of double-bass, a lot of power chords. But it works because it’s not sloppy, and I’m a sucker for clean, powerful breakdowns. Bring Me The Horizon has already caused a craze within the scene, as they played to huge crowds this summer on the Warped Tour. Suicide Season will sell a good amount of records, but it’s nothing original. But it's not so bad that you’ll want to puke your guts out either. If you enjoy having a healthy amount of breakdowns included your daily routine, then Bring Me The Horizon is for you.

This albums really good. They're not amazingly ground breaking i will admit, but they are quite dissimilar to a lot of the more 'scene' driven bands around. They certainly beef up the Taste of Chaos line up for sure.

I would love to do record reviews for metal bands on here, wonder if they would let me :P But I agree that is the one main thing lacking for me on this site. Drew (this reviewer) and Tom Good are the few that I have seen put effort into reviewing a few metal bands.
But we're still missing Black Dahlia Murder, Red Chord, Faceless, Arsis, etc.

True. I just started reading this site on a regular basis within the past year or so. It has certainly expanded some; for awhile it didn't cover enough bands I was interested in to keep me coming back, but it is starting to get better and I feel its worth supporting.
I've been reading Lambgoat for probably a good 7 years or so as well as a few other sites (that have since shut down) but a lot of them are narrow in scope and only cover metal. I think AP would definitely benefit from incorporating more metal and bringing their fans here.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. however; if your reason for hating pop rock is that it "all sounds the same" your statement is extremely stupid. Music is homogenized. Everything sounds sort of the same now. there's only so many ways to make a song: Bring Me The Horizon sounds like the devil wears prada and every other run of the mill hardcore/metal band. same instrumentation, same lyrical themes. you'd be a hypocrite to say all pop rock is the same when in fact the music you like is just as narrow in the range of creativity.

this bands image makes me sick. from the album art to the title to the way they present themselves but this review really got me wanting to give this a listen.

i just got this record yesterday and i have to say that this record didn't let me down. probobly will make my top 10 list.
though i wouldn't say that i agree with the scores, the review made sense to me. bmth are definately talented boys. as far as the lyrics go, they're a bit cheesy but i love the emotion oli has when he screams those words. maybe more emotion than other singers in the genre.
my only problem with the record is that there wasn't a huge "metal" prescence on the record as in songs like (i used to make out with) medusa.
for those who talk shit on this band, shut the hell up! these guys are talented musicians who don't need gimics(like horribly placed keys) to have sucess. also, if you think that all they care about is their image your wrong. you probobly say image isn't everything yet you'll go on about the way these guys look, so basically you're all hypocrites.

I couldn't care less about their image, they are just not my thing musically. I love metal and hardcore but I need it to be a little more unique and each song to have a little more variation.

11/20/08, 01:53 PM
They don't deserve that much hate...good review though
We're at a point in the genre where there's not much that can be done and praised as "original". First it was adding harmonics, then singing, then straight up breakdown core like Emmure and ALFE, then synths and effects like BMTH and TDWP. There are only so many chords and progressions you can make work on a metalcore album, and BMTH (with the exception of their lyrical bull) comes as close as you can get to something fresh. Perfect score, Drew.
EndSerenading
11/20/08, 02:13 PM
I disagree. Straight up breakdown bands were around a longgg time before bands like emmure. Heck I was seeing straight up breakdown bands 9 years ago who had been around for several years when I was a little newbie getting introduced to this stuff.
And synths have been used in metal since the days of bands like Dio in the 80s and van halen in the 70s. And heck even underoath had synths and singing on their early discs 10 years ago.
So there is plenty of room for originality. All of these elements have been used in songs by metal and metalcore bands for a long time. But there are always new things to be done in my opinion. Check out Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, Meshuggah, Necrophagist, Arsis, Cult of Luna. All metal bands who have put out albums in the past year or two and they all sound VERY different from one another, not just subtle differences.
Its easy to think like this, and I used to think the same thing as you. But music keeps evolving and I dont think it will ever stop. And, while bands like this might create something that is fun for the moment, it is the bands that truly DO make the albums that are different and original that will have lasting value 5, 10 years down the road.

And Oli said this was going to sound different from Count Your Blessings. It's a horrible reminiscent of it.

I had to review the re-release of their first EP on Earache earlier this year and thought it was terrible. But Suicide Season is quite different I actually like some of it, the rest is just tolerable.

So, Sykes still sounds like Donald Duck, but the screaming's better than it was on their last full length.
The music's far less technical now, though.

I LOVE Bring Me the Horizon. They're what really got me into hardcore.
LOL wow!.Im sorry.that is pretty sad. ..BMTH isnt a hardcore band!.There a poseur, myspace whore, metalcore band with awful lyrics that have nothing to do with what hardcore stands for. Listen to Comeback Kid,This s Hell, haha even The Chariot will pass.

Well this band really brings out the love/hate in everyone eh? They are..ok, and honestly musically Drew is accurate in saying they are definitely talented musicians. There just isn't much variation to keep you interested. The intro to Comedown really grabbed me, but they aren't my cup of tea I guess. If you want good technical metal (with more ridiculous lyrics) go listen to Protest The Hero, you will not be dissapointed.

I'm not quite sure why I like BMTH, but something about them appeals to me. Their lyrics are pretty bad, except for the song Suicide Season. "We stare at broken clocks, the hands don't turn anymore.
The days turn into nights, empty hearts, and empty places." 0:38 of Diamonds Aren't Forever reminds me of a yapping dog.

in terms of image BMTH suck balls.
but musically it's a hell of a lot better than most metalcore. they're sound is actually quite different, the use of samples on chelsea smiles and the tempo changes in diamonds aren't forever. they're last albumk was medicore, but this one i think is much better, thought still not the best. they're starting to break away. i think the next album should be excellent.

if i had heard this a few years ago i would've probably loved it.
but at this point i'm gettin sorta sick of hearing the same breakdowns and same hardcore metalcore stuff over and over again everyband is doing...so this isn't for me.
but that doesn't mean it's a bad album :)
but i pass.
i'm looking forward to the new meiwthoutYou album.

While BMtH have done a Slkipknot cover, I don't believe they sound alike in the slightest. In my opinion they're not cliched. I think they have a different approach and outlook into things than other bands. That's just my opinion. BMtH is awesome!! =p

I can understand why grind doesn't, as I think it's a required taste if that makes any sense. I don't see why death metal bands don't get covered though.
Idk either. Personally, I think it's because there is a lack of death metalheads on this site.

bring me the horizon rocks dammit. don't even try and deny it. people will be singing the lyrics to songs by akon and ne-yo and kelly clarkson. i'm like shut up. and they say go cry in a corner emo kid. no one likes screamo except u. but w/e. i think bmth is one of the greatest bands of this decade but hey that's my thoughts.

The first time I sampled this CD at a local store, I thought to myself, "There's no way I'm buying this." But it grew on me. A few weeks later I went in and bought it, and I still listen to it at least once a week. Its sheer brutality makes me feel better after a hard day.

I reckon this review was quite brutal.
When I heard Count Your Blessings I though it was a fucking joke that the band got any attention. The music and lyrics were appalling, but those screams could make anyone get sick. That people can like the album, no matter how much you like this band, is an amazement to me.
I approached Suicide Season with hatred towards this band. Not only was their previous release some of the most ridiculous metal music I had ever heard, but the bands attitude in the media was just downright childish, creating this hate towards the band for its members, not just for their music. When I finally decided to dare turn this album on, I attempted to look at it for its music, and not my opinion of the band. And it won me over. The album is amazingly produced, has much better lyrics and music and Oli's new style of singing made the band sound more unique than all those shit deathcore bands around. I understand that for people who liked Count Your Blessings, the change might not have been for the better, but to anyone smart enough to understand that it was absolute horse shit, this could mos def be the ticket that wins over new fans.
I listen to this album weekly. Not all the songs are to my liking, but most are pretty awesome and some have developed into all time favourites, like This Sadness Would Never End, which is magical to me.
I would rate this somewhere in the 70-range.

I have to disagree with you sir, in Count Your Blessings, I thought the music and lyrics were genius, and actually could relate to my own life and how I felt about situations in reference to the lyrics, and the music, well i dunno, i guess it just appealed to me. And I thought his screams were ah-mazing! However, for Suicide Season, Oli changed his vocal style and I was hesitant at first to even continue listening to the band after i heard this album. It was too much of a change i suppose from what I loved about their Count Your Blessings album. But i continued to listen to it occasionally, and i eventually took a liking to it, although i still prefer their previous style, but thats just my opinion.

Eh, well I guess the review was good. You did manage to make one of the worst bands out there sound interesting...but in honesty there is absolutely nothing interesting about this noise that is Bring Me The Horizon. It's for 14 year olds who either think Oli is hot, or they think listening to it makes them "br00t4l" because there's screaming and they say the f word a lot.
Garbage.

I don't see why people actually give a fuck about lyrics.. they mean nothing to me it's about how it's sung that means anything to me.
I'd give this album a 70% at least, Suicide Season is a great, emotional track

It should be understood that this album and most of the songs are reference to the fact that one of Oli's close friends did in fact commit suicide which could be what brings up all the references to death and blood and whatnot that you have claimed to be cliche. Under most circumstances I would agree, but in this one I feel like it caused a huge hit to what you would have otherwise rated it.
