I'm going to say Hidden In Plain View's album Life in Dreaming. I just hadn't familiarized myself with them before I bought the album and holy shit I should have... I love the cd.

Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
That's probably the best example I can think of. I got it expecting something really average with fun singles, but it was really good.

millencolin - kingwood
copeland - in motion
mae - the everglow
the receiving end of sirens - between the heart and the synapse
i thought it'd be just another over-hyped screamo record but it's a great listen all the way through.

Acceptance - Phantoms
I never downloaded the demos (because I hate demos and webrips) but the full album is just great, but the big shocker has to go to The Academy Is... That might be my favorite record of this year. I know it isn't nearly as innovative as other stuff, but its just a great listen all the way through and I still feel as if its the second record Taking Back Sunday should have released. Anyway, seeing them live cemented my opinion.

"Make Believe"- Weezer
Weezer is one of my favorite bands ever, and I love all their CDs, but I honestly didn't think it would this good. I love this album. :animateds
The new TSL really surprised me, too. I wasn't a big fan of their first album, but, wow, this new one I really like!

-acceptance - phantoms. i was never too big of a fan of their previous work, but phantoms is one of the best cd's i've heard in a long time.
-jamison parker - sleepwalker. their old ep was good but got old really fast. the new cd has a much more mature sound to it and i can see myself listening to this cd a lot in the future.

Gatsby's American Dream-Volcano. I thought in the land of lost monsters was just awful, so I wasn't really expecting much from this CD either. However I was suprised, because it is amazing.

The Academy Is... - Almost Here
My friend kept telling me about it, and I was like "no, it's going to suck. Just look at their name..." but then had it playing one day, and I fell in love, and now its one of my favorite CDs.
For not at least.

The Format - Interventions and Lullabies
Limbeck - Hi, Everything's Great
I bought both of them on a chance I may like them, from half.com, and well they are 2 of my fav. bands ever now. I went back and bought both records to support them afterwards. They were so good, I felt like I owed it to them.
Motion City Soundtrack - I Am the Movie
I bought it for one song and well it never let me down from song one.

i'd have to go with... TREOS, TSL, Kevin Devine, NIN, Bleed the Dream.... and strangely Weerd Science... I had very low expectations of Weerd Science being that it's rap and all... but i love the darn cd. It's so much fun to listen to... Girl, Your Baby's Worm Food is deffy one of the best tracks on the cd.

i had a bit of a bias for some reason against Copeland but "In Motion" cured me of that ridiculousness. It's one of my top cd's in rotation and wont leave for some time. Also, I've liked most of Mudvayne's "Lost & Found". I didn't think I'd dig (no pun) that much of it.
