I'm pretty sure this happens everywhere. I notice it mostly with emo though rather than hardcore.

The only time genre classifications bother me is when some of my friends just call anything catchy, soft or slow, "emo".

the hardest most fucked genres are definitely indie or post hardcore.
the best and the worst bands are lumped in both styles of play.
especially post hardcore. You can have either the WORST convo with someone about that genre that has no clue or THE BEST convo about that genre.
They cross Post Hardcore with Indie (faster type indie bands flirt with post hardcore, just like slower type indie bands might flirt the fine like of folk or midwestern emo but still be an "indie" band.)
Definitely the worst than your average "hardcore" "screamo" "metalcore" nonsense.

I sometimes explain to people that no, screamo is not a genre. Most "in" kids don't debate music with me.
If you locked BFMV (before anyone jumps at this, I'm not calling BFMV screamo, they're just the only metalcore band i could think of off the top of my head) and Rammstein in a cage, there is no question which one would come out alive.

Do kids your age really only listen to bottom feeding scene leftovers like the bands you listed as your favorites? I remember listening to some pretty bad music when I was your age, but do kids nowadays block everything else out? Have you ever heard any other genres of music? Is the temptation to fit with the trends and listen to disposable shallow music too much?
Just wondering...

Ignoring your apparent need to trash the bands I listen to currently, no, a lot of the kids at my school listen to crap like Lil Wayne who I could not have respect for if you paid me. However, among a smaller group of kids, Boys Like Girls is appearing to be popular and so is All Time Low which is why I mentioned those two. Lil Wayne is listened to largely because of his flow; the lyrics are second ranking. I do like some of his songs but he rarely releases any mixtape/album that doesn't have a lot of shit on it.

I'm shying away from 3OH!3 if anything. I really liked their single so I checked them out. I can laugh at their lyrics more than sit there and analyze. Obviously I'm not about to list them under 'Best lyrics'...ever.
Family Force 5 is more of an easy listen, but I don't think their lyrics are poor. Not even close to comparable with Lil' Wayne. And I have issues with Lil' Wayne beyond his lyrics.

Using "easy listen" was a poor choice of words on my part. I suppose I listen to Family Force 5 for the reason you listed that people listen to Lil Wayne. It's more for the sound. But in any event, I still think that Lil Wayne's lyrics are much much worse than anything that's come from FF5

No I didn't say anything about changing your taste. I am just wondering how so many kids who "like what they like" end up listening to exactly the same bands, which are all more or less clones of each other. I was just asking for general knowledge because I can't go back to being that age. I could have picked lots of other people to ask the same question you just happened to be here when I felt like asking. Perhaps I will see what others similar to you think about it.

I'm kidding. No need to take it so serious. But really. Wasn't kidding bout those three. Totally should listen. When it comes to the Descendents, I recommend you stick to Everything Sucks and Cool to Be You because they are pop punk basically.. though Cool to be You is heavy on the pop side, while their older stuff (like Milo Goes to College, one of the best albums ever) is more hardcore with pop punk leanings.

Sorry about that, I was taking the other guy...what was it, Troggy? Yeah, I was reacting to what he was saying more seriously. By the way you describe it, I'd probably like Cool to be You a lot because I have a tendency to like more pop than punk.

Right. I understand that. I used to have a lot of CDs like that (still trying to get rid of a few), but what is really interesting to me is that there is a heck of a lot of music with a "pop sound" and I like quite a few bands that may be described that way, but people your age seem to only branch out to a select few yet to be heard bands.
Some of the bands are mainstream, Boys like Girls, FTSK, Metro Station, but the other ones are unknowns as of now and kids have managed to "discover" all of those, but don't listen to other pop sensible records that may be pretty different. The internet is a pretty big place, how did you stumble upon the ones that you did?

Yeah, I mean I really don't like that so many kids seem to stick to the same couple of bands. I'll admit that I like them but there are some bands that are still so small and whose main focus is currently building their fan base on myspace. I would like to hope that I'm not the same way because I'll listen to any new band that I find. A good one is The Downtown Fiction and I find them to be more pop than anything else but I really like them and no one really knows them because they're quite new.
Are you asking how I came across the bands I listen to right now? My main source of music for a little while has been my best friend, my taste in music is kind of a less varied version of hers. But I have a myspace and I'm so glad that bands friend so many people in hopes of gaining a few fans because I find some amazing bands that way.

You know, I remember having a very similar attitude at your age. I would listen to any new band I could find. The thing is, virtually none of your favorite bands have more than 1 or 2 albums. They are all very new and are gaining success partly because of each other. My CDs at that age had a lot in common with that, lots of debut albums, a couple follow ups if they were out already, but I was searching for the most obscure bands that sounded the same to what I already liked. As it turned out, those bands being obscure didn't make them any good.
Myspace is a double edged sword. It has listings for all kinds of great artists, but I feel like the new generation of myspace users doesn't look back in time to bands that have established themselves already, but is out to hunt the next big thing before they are big.

I'm not going to try and argue with you because what you said is exactly right. I mean, I care about the bands putting out records. I don't care if I'm one of the 'original' fans or whatever those people who pride themselves on being an older fan call themselves. In all honesty, people who parade around saying that they knew a band that's currently big before they got so huge bother me to no end because they don't seem to care enough about the music itself but rather the popularity of the band. The point of a band is the music, not how long you've known them. I like listening to new bands to give them a chance and so that I can follow through with bands that I really like. You probably assumed and are correct in assuming that the bands I listen to are all newer bands. The thing is, I wish the big explosive buzz over some of my favorite bands would die down and I know they will at some point because as much as I think they deserve the praise, people are too obsessed with what's popular instead of the music. It's really quite annoying.
and then when said band becomes too big and too mainstream their cds are dropped like wet food stamps.
i admit wholeheartedly that i would rather suck dick at an aids clinic than listen to alot of the trash alot of mainstream bands put out, but people have gotten to the point where if anyone outside of their circle of CQQL kids likes a band, they have to move to something else. obscurity doesn't make band good AT ALL. its one thing to hate on a band because they've let the fame/image get to their heads, great and well known example being My Chemical Romance...its understandable and obvious why people trash them.
a friend of mine told me he hates Coheed and Cambria now because they're too well known...because they've had too many music videos show up on MTV and because too many "****" are into them now. do people not have their own opinions any more? i loved coheed and cambria from when I first heard their material as shabutie, damn near a decade ago, and no matter what garbage/slip-ups/shit-albums they put out I'll probably still think of them as great artists.
a majority of the time a good band band is going to get popular because..well...they're fucking good.
and before anyone gets dicksore that wasn't directed towards anyone, just a small rant i had to get out.

Saetia is screamo.
The Devil Wears Prada or Drop Dead Gorgeous or whatever the fuck "scene" kids these days listen to and call their shitty flavor of the week metalcore groups screamo, is not.
Why is Saetia always the typical name-drop response when the topic is on screamo? I'm not targeting you, in my opinion there were better screamo bands out there at the time, and even before them. Don't get me wrong I think Saetia is ace, or I did anyway when I liked them a lot. It's kinda like, "when in doubt drop Saetia when proving you know what screamo is!"
Meh, rant. :P

When I'm namedropping screamo bands I always try to go more obscurely named like Khayembii Communique. But Pg. 99, Orchid, and CoC are so much better than Saetia.

Hehe :P. You're joking with me aren't ya.
I kind of agree. I'm not big on pg.99 though, and I respect Orchid greatly, great lyrics, great band. City of Caterpillar definitely takes the cake for me though, backed on that. I liked a lot more songs that they did as opposed to Saetia. I really like Neil Perry and Suis La Lune... That's good though! Agreed.

3OH!3 and Family Force 5 are pure shit.

Nothing. The music is just easy to make fun of.
Matter of fact, it would be pretty awesome if Warped stopped inviting the 4-5 good bands per year that it allows and just kept it to the shitty norms since that way those shitty bands wouldn't waste up time slots in my local venues..

Thanks for the clarification.
I just see a lot of people hating on scene kidds
But I really dont see what theyve done to be so hated
Beside liking what they like.

Every stereotype gets hate from someone. Scene kids are not unique at all in that aspect.

"wiggers" and "mohawked punks" have been around longer and receive far more hate than scene kids generally. From scene kids at times too.

Funny part is, they werent even the best band on their label back in their time period of being a band and making music.

Yeah! I can't stand CTTS :|! Eek. But I see them constantly dropped too. I guess they're a good door way into that genre and it's generally the first band people are recommended with, so it makes sense.
I KNOW! Did they even have as many fans as they do now? I guess it kind of makes sense how there'd be more fans now and all...I don't even think I can talk. But on this forum I go to, there's like a cult following for them. Even to this day I really don't understand it LOL. <--- There :P! I said it.

The only time genre classifications bother me is when some of my friends just call anything catchy, soft or slow, "emo".
This. The fucking hardcore kids in my area refer to any song with clean singing as "emo vocals".
I rage so fucking hard each time.

Louisville hardcore kids make me laugh really hard actually. But I mean, I understand what they're saying if they mean Elliott or a band with similar vocals.
