Scott and I thought we would do something different for this review, so we did a conversational review, where the entire review is a discussion we had about the album. You can find our review of Fall Out Boy (http://www.falloutboyrock.com) - From Under the Cork Tree right here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/reviews/showproduct.php?product=721).

Haha you said it, Pat. +Scene points for the perfect prediction, and the awesome ETID signature. That's a nice pic.
I agree with a lot of what you guys said, but I'd still say it was an above-average pop-punk album, so I'd give it higher than a 5, at least. I think hype just skewed everything.

As do I. Hot Damn was pretty much the only thing in my car last summer. I still listen to it before sports as my warm up CD... and pretty much all the time. Gutter Phenomenon is one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

I agree with most of the review...the first CD is tons better than the second.
I just find it funny that the site that has pimped, promoted, and figuratively sucked the dicks of Fall Out Boy slams the album it had previously proclaimed the equivalent of the second coming.

There are many different people working on the site, and they all don't have to hold the same opinion. What Scott likes isn't necessarily what Jason likes, and what Kamtin likes isn't necessarily what Ryan likes, etc etc. Also, maybe they thought the album would be a lot better, because they just kept thinking of Take This To Your Grave, or maybe the new songs sounded better live.

I love the new album but hey that's me. Scott and Ryan didn't like it therefore they gave a poor review. The review style was pretty interesting. Big props there.
I only liked a few songs from their last album so I didn't really have high expectations. I love this album though. I've been playing it constantly for the past few days and haven't gotten tired of it at all. I'd give it atleast a solid 8.
This album is probably going to be one of those love or hate/hit or miss ones but I think Fall Out Boy is going to blow up as soon as the album comes out.

I think that either my ears are clogged or I am completely a fool. I think that Patrick's voice shines on this CD much moreso than on TTTYG due to his vocal solos and the vocal intensive songs like Dark Alley. He IS the band, his voice is what puts FOB apart from the rest of trashy Pop Punk bands out there. And yes, the lyrics are something to take note of. Look at the rest of the POP-PUNK scene. "Joke me something awful, like kisses on the necks of 'just friends,' we're the kids who feel like dead ends." The song is somber, and the lyrics are very well done for the mood of the song. This goes for the whole CD. I completely agree about the screaming match at the end of "I Slept With Someone..." but I think it's cool to hear what Pete and Chad (from NFG) used to do in their olden days.
But to each his own. That was just a nasty nasty review, guys. Harsh. Be nice.

To Ryan and Scott...I'm not hearing where the production sounds muddy with the instruments, I was just wondering what tracks, in particular, you heard that the most on...I've still only heard 7 songs from the album, so maybe I just don't have those songs.

i agree with most of what these guys said, and im HUUUGE fall out boy fan. on the first cd, the lyrics came natural, and it was a fun cd (musically) with mostly brand new-esque lyrics. on this cd, the lyrics all sound forced. i think the melodies on the choruses save a lot of the songs though. what REALLY kills it for me is the poem from pete at the end of "get busy living or get busy dying". that was just uncalled for. a lot of this stuff seems like something that hot topic would be dying to sell. id say i like about 9 out of the 13 songs. i still love patrick's voice, but i expected a lot more with the lyrics. (and what's with the alt-rock gin blossoms sounding song?) this is just MY opinion though.

The album seems ok, definitely not as catchy or instantly sing-along-able as Take This to Your Grave, if that is in fact a word. It just doesn't draw me in at all. Course I didn't really love TTtYG, only individual tracks.

i completely disagree with you guys... my first listen when i had the 7 track promo, i hated those songs, and i knew that if the albums was like these i wouldn't stand most of the songs on it, and would want my old fall out boy back. so i didn't listen to it very much, just so i wouldn't hate those songs with a passion by the time the album came out. now that i have the whole thing, and have listened a number of times on the computer and in my car. i love it..

I have to say that is probably the most entertaining review I have ever read on this site...
But one thing: Since when is FOB supposed to be lighthearted and summery? I personally like the darker overtones on this album, and find the lyrics to be much more tongue in cheek than their previous work.
Either way, people can hate on the album all they want, but this one is gonna earn the FOB boys their platinum.

Damn, I personally agree with this review. Finally, two people are able to agree how overrated this band is and that they are not as talented as everyone thinks they are. Sure, the first album was good but this one is not as good, but everyone is afraid to insult FOB because that would not be cool. Fuck, get off the damn bandwagon biatches and be honest with yourself, the new FOB album just doesn't live up to the hype. No one had a problem bashing the second TBS album. :animateds

yeah no offense to Ryan because I feel he is one of the most honest people on here, but with the music that he likes, he is not a very good fit to review this album. I mean with all the bands that he recommends, I have yet to listen to and like any of them for the most part. It just seems that if you are going to get someone to review the album, don't get for example a hardcore guy to review a pop-punk album, not saying that Ryan is hardcore, its just an analogy. I dunno but I do know that Scott does like pop-punk occasionally as he has stated he likes the new Acceptance CD which I just can't stop listening to. I have yet to receive my FOB CD in the mail yet but from the songs I hear, I pretty much would say that I am going to enjoy this CD very much as TTTYG is one of my favorite CD's in my collection.

Hahaha. I woke up today in an absolutely terrible fucking mood. I come down and open up Abs Punk and got the biggest laugh I've had in weeks. Bravo to Scott and Ryan for actually speaking their mind and not just playing this off as another "amazing" album. For me, this album is extremely forgettable, although "Dance, Dance" is an excellent song and will definately be finding its way onto summer mix tapes.
And I'm very, very surprised to see the FOB fans taking this so well. Where the fuck are the flamewars? Or are you all hiding in a closet cause this album absolutely shit the bed???? ;)

i see what you're saying, it's not that cut and dry though. For example, read ryan's review of Cartel - that's pop-punk, and he enjoys it. I obviously like the new acceptance a lot. it's just that we happened to agree for the most part on this album, although Ryan felt stronger about it than me.

exactly what he said. It's nice to see people be honest about this band and not feel they have to hype up the album for the sake of looking cool. This album has been overhyped and there is nothing refreshing or amazing from it. People find Fall Out Boy awesome because they get the hype of being 'clever' pop punk when its just like everything else.

I just thought it was not a very solid, crisp sound to it. Seriously, it shouldn't have been that hard to do either in the production. Even Cartel's self-released EP sounded better than this roduction wise. It's just not mixed well...everything seems to run together.

I think the review was a bit too harsh, but overall I agree.
I think they went backwards. I'm usually not one to compare albums, because I hate it, but it's hard not to here. I mean, I loved Take This To Your Grave. I can listen to that cd at any time. It's fun, catchy, and just overall a good put together record. Then came this record. They have too many hit or miss songs. Some songs jump out, others make me want to not even listen to this cd anymore. It's just kind of like, what happened? This isn't the Fall Out Boy I remember. Their sound may have "matured," but that doesn't always mean it gets better. I'm just hoping that the next record will be much much better.
But a 4.5? And a 3.9? Come on. It isn't that bad.

2 years ago fall out boy was one of my favorite bands. even before i heard the album, i knew take this to your grave was going to live in my cd player once it came out. this based on some mp3.com tracks from the album, a slew of demos, and a couple other songs (yule shoot your eye out, etc). but in those past 2 years i have ceased to enjoy much pop-punk. pop-punk is what introduced me to non-mainstream music in the first place (credit nfg's nothing gold can stay) but i have just moved into more substantial (in my opinion) music. every now and then ill hear a catchy song and listen to it for a couple days before i get sick of it.
anyway, i was still excited to hear the new fall out boy album becuase i remembered how much i loved the last one. then i saw the tracklisting.... stupid. that's all i could think of. trite and forced. not a good start. then i heard sugar we're going down. not bad, catchy, but not up to par with take this to your grave. then i heard the rest of the album. not one memorable track on it. the lyrics are nowhere near as impressive to me as they once were. the hooks just arent as catchy. the drums just arent as awesome. i figure its just me and for some reason i have lost my taste in music like this. everyone seems to be in love with it. i don't know.
i pretty much agree with everything you guys said in your "review"

when I first heard Neal Avron was going to be producing i was scared it was gonna be heavily over produced like NFG or the new Yellowcard, but I was pleasantly suprised with it...i think the production he did works really well for these guys, i have to say i did prefer the TTTYG sound better but this is a good sound for them, slightly more polished than what okeefe gave them.

EVERYONE WATCH OUT! Stating your opinion on Fall Out Boy's new album could be harmful to your health, and/or scene points, especially if you say it's above average, but not quite up to par with their previous release! However, to boost those scene points, just say how much you like the band in someone's signature! Here is an example:

He[Patrick] IS the band, his voice is what puts FOB apart from the rest of trashy Pop Punk bands out there.
Am I the only one who found that kind of humorous? Many interviews that come out talk about Pete the whole time? There's probably a good percentage of people that listen to them that only know who Pete is. You go to the Fueled By Ramen tour, and all you see are fat little 14 year old girls that are sporting a Good Charlotte or Hawthorn Heights shirt screaming for Pete.
Its been said before but... What is with that poem at the end of track 12? Seriously? I laughed at it when I heard it.

Ryan and Scott- great review, although I disagree with you about the album. I personally like it. I think you've just said what a lot of us are thinking that are ripping on this CD.
It seems like they tried too hard to put something out while their hype was there. From the opening song, it lacks the "punch" that "Tell That Mick..." had. The lyrics are completely throwaway and honestly, if you cut them up, you'd make a whole new FOB album. The boys are all hardcore veterans and are capable of so much more than garbage riffs and recycled lyrics. The EP showed promise of what was to come, and this album just...MEH.
If you're hooked on Patrick's voice, listen to Cartel.

:animateds
I would not consider myself Fall Out Boy's biggest fan. My enjoyment of their first album was probably mild at best. Sure, there was some really good stuff on there lyrically, but I wasn't blown away by them musically. This is coming from someone near Chicago where Fall Out Boy hails from. However, when I saw Fall Out Boy perform not too long ago in St. Louis, it was apparent to me that this band has an exponential amount of energy that can just not be contained within the confines of a studio album.
That being said, I've recently become a bigger fan of Fall Out Boy and what they are able to do. Having heard a good deal of the new album, I feel that I am justified in saying that Patrick has one of the best voices of any pop singer out there. I think that's very evident on this new CD and especially on that "Cupid's Chokehold" of the new Gym Class Heroes album. He's just got a damn good voice. I feel that the latest Fall Out Boy effort is marginally better than their last, but still needs to be heard live in order to be appreciated. I also believe that anyone who doesn't think "7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)" is a "fun" song is just fucking lying.

There are progressions in music, stages through which people go, it's a fact of life. I don't think all pop-punk sucks, nor have I ever said that; but I think this is a fairly boring album and example of pop-punk. But don't try to deny there are trends in musical growth as people age, because there are, it's just the way it is. Scott, I think you're wrong in saying that tastes evolve into whatever you're listening to now. I don't think there's a "timeline" with musical genres placed on it and maturity levels next to them. Whatever, my main point is I get mad when people say that their music style is more mature than another. Just in sayining puts down so many people. A lot of people think hardcore is more mature than pop punk. You don't need to look down on people for liking pop punk. Sorry for arguing I realize I am an idiot most of the time.

yeah I agree with that but I don't think that is what Scott and Ryan were saying in the review, just what their opinion is of the music. Like Scott said before, he does enjoy some pop-punk, just not this album.
