I think of them as a joke that some people have taken waaaaay too seriously and turned into a popularity contest. the higher the scene points, the "cooler" you are

in a traditional setting it kinda of goes like this.

scenester #1: "Oh i knew so and so band before they were famous."
scenester #2: "wow you are rad. I give you uber scene points brah."
scenster #1: "Yes, Yes. I know I am awesome. Everyone else can only hopelessly aspire to become as awesome as I am"
scenester #3: "yo guys check out my mohawk!"
scenester #2: "Man punk is so not trendy right now. Downgrade. I subtract your scene points for such a careless choice of a hairstyle and even more points because those shoes are made of leather."

that was some seriously funny shit, i can't believe that the genre has boiled down to hot-topic-ness. i can't remember the last time i was in a hot topic, i think it was like 3 years ago to get a blink 182 sticker for my old car. kids these days, they can't appriciate good music, everything has to be scene with them, the have to have the pants with the straps hanging off of assinine places, they have to do their makeup like billie joe from greenday, and they have to be white as a sheet.

on a similar note, i hate the kids that put on all of their scene gear just to go to concerts, and they're all like, dude, even though we're at the same show, i love this band so much more than you because i'm so much more scene than you

Becuase you know, it's possible to tell if something sounds like shit without them releasing much info on the band and absolutely no music.

This isn't really a criticism of the quality of the music, but Blink's side projects are pretty unoriginal in concept. Blink kinda' bit Green Day. Then, they formed Boxcar Racer, which was supposed to be an acoustic side project, right after Dashboard blew up. And now they form this just after The Postal Service got big. Its weird 'cause both Dashboard and Postal Service started as side projects. Its like even Blink's side projects have to be modeled after other side projects. Which isn't to say the music won't be good, but I wish they'd come up with something that wasn't so heavily indebted to some other "trend of the moment" band.

And even if it doesn't sound exactly like them, its inspired by them. Just like Boxcar was inspired by Dashboard, even if it didn't sound like them. I'm just saying, their "influences" are a little too recent.
